Ashamed to be 'British'

TBH I actually found her foul and abusive language more offensive than the ridiculous racist slurs she was spouting.

Not that I'm in any way condonding her ignorant racist views, it's just that they were aimed at adults who could see how offensive, ill-educated, moronic and disgusting they were, whereas all that poor little kid could hear was F**k this and F**k that. What chance has that little'un got with a mother like that.

(Hope I don't get lynched for saying this and that people get the point I was trying to make).

Really shouldn't be an issue in 2011, but racism is passed down like a malign hereditary condition, unfortunately.

Doesn't help that our immigration policy, or lack thereof, provides so much ammunition to people as hateful as this.

It didn't help she couldn't even pronounce it. Made it sound like she was saying something else.

Yeah I think she started to say another word then realised it wasn't actually a country and had to improvise.

Who would you have been on the tram? To be honest I'd have been the woman pretending to use her phone, or maybe the one filming it.

My first thought was for the kid. I notice the black lady/bloke behind her nearly stood up to do something before a fellow tram rider stopped her/him - and then gave her/him a hug.

Can't believe nobody gave her a slap. One day she'll get her comeuppance for saying something like this. Good. I'm 100% British, and ashamed.

Absolutely disgraceful. Everyone else on that tram represents Britain 10000000000x more than she ever could. Ignorant and horrible.

You are partly right Andy. Only two people actually had the balls to say anything, the rest of them were stood around too busy pretending it wasn't happening and playing with their phones, even filming it FFS. The Britain i know didn't let that sort of things go on and stand by like nothing was happening.

It does reflect some of modern Britain, people with their heads in the sand, pretending nothing is wrong, too wrapped up their own self interest. All those of their phones are probably on facebook reading statuses about TOWIE and what people are having for dinner than actually telling the stupid crack whore to shut the f*ck up

lolz. Irony at its finest

I'm sorry, but there's no place for reprehensible people like her in today's society. How are these people coming to live and work in this country supposed to integrate and settle if there are morons like her spouting off like that?

If people were more accepting of immigrants and 'foreigners' then we would undoubtedly live in a more peaceful country. People like her cause the tension that leads all foreign people in this country to be stigmatised.

What is a country apart from a border? I think to have pride in a nation to the exclusion of others is ridiculous. We're all human, we all live on this earth, but it's completely ignorant f*cking scum like her that are holding us all back from peace and unity as a species.

This species of ours fought over territory long before the concept of countries was even thought of mate.

Oh do give it a rest Michael. Britain is one of the best countries in the world at integrating immigrants. You'll always get the odd crack head like her but generally as a nation we are pretty accepting. We've just got too bloody many of them!!

Although the person who did say something was also aggressive and used abusive language so that hardly helped matters.

On the whole, yes. But the growing support for far-right organisations like the BNP and EDL show that acceptance for immigrants amongst certain sections of society is waning. A lot of problems within our society seem to be blamed on innocent people coming here to work when really there are other reasons.

If 3 or 4 people had back her up rather than playing on their phones i'm sure she'd have piped down.

I agree, although it would have been better had a few of them talked in a calm and firm manner about what she was doing. In general, shouting and swearing at racist idiots makes them worse not better.

Racist undoubtedly. Sadly, that's probably also reflective of her general attitude of hate, hostility, selfishness and ignorance. See way too much of it nowadays.

The worst thing is how the attitudes will ring down the generations - kids learning from their so-called 'parents'. A teacher I know was quite taken aback when she was told to: "F*ck off, you slag" by a FOUR-year old. Sadly after nine years teaching hearing similar abuse from Infant school kids, it doesn't phase her any more. It might only be one in twenty or so kids who behave like it, but it impacts so much on the behaviour and emotions of the good ones.

What will probably happen to her is that she'll escape jail because she's got a kid. The kid won't be removed because Social Services will always attempt to 'keep the family together' - even when it's blatantly obvious that any semblance of 'family life' is non-existent. That way they'll ensure the kid enjoys a future of delinquency, violence, under-achievement and (probably) abuse. It's about time the emphasis was placed on what's best for the CHILD, not on maintaining some dysfunctional domestic arrangement, centred on an unrealistic belief that the parents' attitudes and behaviour can somehow be moderated. This is one area that the 'Nanny State' should grow some balls and remove kids into foster care/adoption. The parents? Lobotomy might be worth considering.

In alot country where there are economic difficulties there is a rise in support for far right organisations and immigrants coming in seen as "taking our jobs" are an easy target. However, support for the EDL and BNP is only relatively a handful of people. I dont see how anyone can argue that we haven't had too many immigrants come in over the last 10-20 years but generally the ones that do come here are made welcome. lets not forget as well not all of them are model citizens. One in Seven people in prision in the UK are foreign and they have their own militant groups as well just like the EDL.

She rolls her head and gurns like a recovering crackhead.

Exactly what i thought. Looked like a crack head to me. Which means if nothing else you'd get a BJ for a score and she wont have many teeth so might be money well spent. If you like that sort of thing, obviously.

To be honest, I get that very tram every day and you simply can't tell what sort of :uhoh: people are stood there on the periphery, so I don't really blame anyone for not wading in. While my experience of Croydon in the year or so I've been living here is that (August 8th aside) it's not as bad as its reputation would have you believe, there are clearly plenty of unsavoury characters who live in the area - as with most parts of London, to be fair - so in situations like that I'd be inclined just to keep my head down.

Confrontation in an environment where there's no escape route if things go pear-shaped is asking for trouble, IMO.

No excuse in this case: a simple read of the situation would have made it clear that there was little or no risk to confronting her.

That white girl playing her phone looked like a polak to me, so I can just about understand why an immigrant would not want to get involved.

Something very similar happened while I was on a train on the way to the JPT, needless to say I was 'well up for it that day' and got involved by telling said racist idiotic woman to shut the hell up, got backed up by lots of others also, luckily she got off pretty quick!

i generally hate getting the buses in ****ter parts of suburban london, usually a few loons around, worst thing for me are the kids wanting to look tough playing their music on their phones then scowling at anyone who dares look at them, no one ever confronts them either.

It probably wont happen that often, but I have to agree 100%.

This, can't sum it up much better than that. Funny that this has got so much coverage, you always get freaks and nutters babbling on about something on public transport in London.

Going back to the title of the thread, Andy - why are you / does this make you ashamed to be British?

Yeah I thought the same thing. Just becuase we have some nobs in our society doesn't make me ashamed to be British. I can't imagine there is a country in the world that doesn't have it's fair share of scum like this woman. I think we sometimes make the mistake of thinking that only Britain has rascists, ultra right groups and criminals living in it.

I have no doubt, sad as it is, she is a product of her up bringing no doubt that little kid on her lap is soaking it up like a sponge.

You have to remember despite being an expert on everything and being a Question Time addict, Andy has probably never met a person with those views or an immigrant for the matter, it's difficult meeting people from behind your computer screen in you middle class house in Hampshire. I can't wait to hear his uni reports when he moves to his cultural melting pot he is dreaming about, then we'll see if his ideological views on the world get tainted or not.

She was obviously off her head on something. Personally I found her bad language disgusting, especially in the presence of children. I was on the train to derby and there were no seats so about 10 people including myself we stood in the bit where the door is and a woman was effing and blinding down the phone. I simply gave her the look (a superior look down your nose look like I give to people handing out copies of the socialist worker newspaper) and she stopped.

I hate to go against the grain here, but I've encountered a growing number of people who share her opinion

I live in Huntingdon, it's very white and middle class.

Last year, whilst in the fruit & veg section in Tesco Huntingdon, I heard an old woman approach an Asian guy and told him he should be wearing gloves, because nobody wants to buy food that his filthy hands have been near. I was fairly shocked when 2 people congratulated her

Maybe she was just worried about food hygeine, or did she make the point that if the hands had been white it would have been alright?

Sadly it's all about up bringing alot of older people were brought up in time were things that aren't considered acceptable now were consider the norm so while not suggesting it's ok I can understand it. No doubt the woman in the OP video was brought up to hate by her parents and will pass the hate on to her kid. Rascism isn't just a British disease though.
