Gemmel Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 I think Hammonds against Leeds was, but I can't remember that many goals we have scored from outiside the area this season. I'm sure I will be corrected and there are loads and it's not a bad thing (Just look at our goal difference) but just wondered if this is an actual instruction from Nigel, based on the way we try and walk the ball into the net. Silky smooth when it comes off - a bit frustrating sometimes, when you think .... "just hit the bloody thing" Certainly not a moan, couldn't be enjoying things more, but just an observation.
jam Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 I wonder if there are figures comparing shot/goal success from inside and outside the area. I'd imagine unsuccessful shots from the area and balls in are far less likely to result in us losing possession.
Charlie Wayman Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 It's the problem that Arsenal have and increasingly Man U. When it comes off it looks a million dollars but far more often nobody wants to take responsibility for the last touch, so to speak and as you say we all get bloody frustrated - as witnessed in that increasingly desperate shout from the crowd "S-h-o-o-o-o-o-t". No pleasing us is there but I love the "softly softly, catchee monkey" approach or am I not allowed to say that?
Saint Garrett Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 I was actually thinking about this last night. I could only think of Hammond's from outside the box...(Although Holmes was against Watford). Is it that its an instruction or are we just not very good at shooting from distance? Lambert scored loads of goals for Brizzle from outside the box. Or is it that we always have pplayers running past the ball carrier so its easier to pass.
Window Cleaner Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 Pretty evident that keepers are getting better on long range pot-shots or defences are closing players down more quickly and more efficiently.Footballers are getting better and better across the board, probably because there are more and more candidates for every starting place in every professional or semi-professional side. It always makes me smile when we get the old hallelujah chorus for past glories. Most of them wouldn't even make professional status in our times.
VectisSaint Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 We get penalties outside the area now though :-)
saintant Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 Was discussing this a few weeks back. No complaints about our style of football but I do feel the players should be encouraged to have a few more shots from distance. With our passing game it seems nobody is willing to try their luck but surely it's worth mixing it up a bit and not to always take the option of trying to get the ball into the box on every attack. We have some decent ball strikers so let's see more shots from outside the box.
Saint_clark Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 I think the teams already proven that keeping hold of the ball is more effective that trying your luck every now and then.
sambosa75 Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 We have by far the best goals for tally in the league. I can't believe this is even being discussed.
Big_Bald_Si Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 We have by far the best goals for tally in the league. I can't believe this is even being discussed. Speak for yourself, I'd rather score fewer goals, but with more from outside the area. It's quality, not quantity. Honest.
david in sweden Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 (edited) We get penalties outside the area now though :-) yes well that's a PLUS, isn't it Vectis. If there had been video technology for penalties, too we'd have had about 4 on Saturday. Edited 26 November, 2011 by david in sweden
Jack Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 Don't think we've scored more than a couple, but it's not like we don't try. Frazer, chappers, cork and Morgan have all been having a go now and again. Lambert really hasn't been getting into positions to shoot from range all that often, but then again does he really need to? Maybe away from home where we don't look like scoring with every attack. 40 league goals already and 12 from Lambert will suggest we don't really need to try from range.
Saint_clark Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 Speak for yourself, I'd rather score fewer goals, but with more from outside the area. It's quality, not quantity. Honest. Surely in this case, quantity indicates quality?
Window Cleaner Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 In fact if we were relying on hit and hope 30 yarders for our goals wouldn't it be a sign that our build-up play was failing us and we were reduced to speculative attempts?
The9 Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 I think scoring a lot of goals from close-in shows an ability of the team to keep possession well in the attacking third of the pitch and deliver the ball into the positions where goals are most likely to be scored from. The fact that long range goals are rare generally shows the probability of scoring from them is much lower than from closer in, and if we can shoot from 7 or 8 yards insted of 20, then all the better.
stardustonmyfeet Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 Speak for yourself, I'd rather score fewer goals, but with more from outside the area. It's quality, not quantity. Honest. Wow, speak for yourself indeed! The more goals the merrier... there's plenty of quality in the build-up.
Saint Garrett Posted 24 November, 2011 Posted 24 November, 2011 I don't think anyone is moaning that we arent scoring many goals from outside the box...just stating the fact.

John Boy Saint Posted 25 November, 2011 Posted 25 November, 2011 You can't beat a good smoker lit from outside the box: at the moment one of those would be a rare treat, but opening up defences at close quarters as we seem to do at will at the moment is very special in itself. 26 passes and in what more do you want??
The9 Posted 25 November, 2011 Posted 25 November, 2011 Anyway, I bet both Fox and Lambert score direct from free kicks this season. The free-kick routine that ended with Hooiveld's goal a few weeks back (against Peterboro?) is a further example of why we don't have to hit long shots.
david in sweden Posted 26 November, 2011 Posted 26 November, 2011 as a part of the generation who watched Brian O'Neil take pot-shots from 40 yards out, I have to say that MLT was the most spontaneous long distance shooter I've ever seen, though I did enjoy that James Beattie special with a 45 yard punt into the Chelsea goal after ..13 seconds was it ? Nice one BT.
