So what is our best performance of the season?

Rather like a goal of the month competition but now we count in whole games.

After seeing Dubai's rection to the Brighton game 'are we really this good?' what do you think is our best performance of the season?

I've seen six games live and three more on telly/streams.

For me Ipswich away, first 45 minutes, was the 'best' Saints football I've ever seen; I also saw Midds home on the stream and that was also an excellent performance.

For those that have seen lots of games (or even if you haven't!) what's our best performance so far this season?

Middlesborough was the one where I finally thought to myself, "Sh1t, we really are this good - we're well out in front in this league totally on merit" - I was never quite sure up to that point. Back to back wins against probably the two next best teams was seriously impressive.

I agree with the OP the 1st half at Ipswich was the best football I have ever seen a Saints team play live, the passing & movement was awesome we could have been 6 up at half time Lallana Cork Guly & Lambo just ran the show.

We played very well against Boro for the whole game & played well against Leeds but the Ipswich away performance was when I realised we have got a great team.

Barnsley away we were absolutely astonishing until 10 minutes before Chaplow was sent off, I'm guessing better than the halves of excellence I've heard we had at Ipswich and Leicester which were undone a bit by conceding goals, and we've never come close to that fluidity at home all season other than against Middlesbrough at the start and Peterboro when they had 11.

Leeds was definitely not one of our best matches, Barnsley was a hundred times better than that performance, and even though we ended up clinging on, we utterly dominated and created chance after chance after chance before Chaplow was sent off and even then we were solid at the back to hold on.

The only 3 games I'd completely rule out were Burnley away where we were gash until the 70th minute (and then dominated), Cardiff away when we were gash until the 75th minute (and then dominated), and Reading away where we didn't even start (and still got a draw). Every other game had significant spells of our pressure.

I should point out that I didn't go to Leicester, Ipswich, Derby or Coventry, nor any of the League Cup games, and missed home matches against Millwall and Birmingham.

Given the expectation and the comfort of the performance, it's between Boro home and Barnsley away for me. We were more effective against Boro but we played the best football at Barnsley.

I think we're underestimating our performance against against West Ham. Ok, we scraped a 1-0 win but we demonstrated all the tools we need to challenge for promotion, against possibly the best side on paper in the league. Just because we didnt win 'big' so to speak, I think it could prove to be the game that gave the players the belief that that could actually go on and win back to back promotion. It also showed that we can cope with sides that are going to go down the route one road against us.

THIS, Started to believe we could be promoted after that game. A Massive performance in a massive game. To see our team outboss West hams premiership quality midfield. I thought this could be on.

Ipswich away, that 4th goal with Morg lobing it over the defence as a pass to the space Lallana was running into goes down as one of the best things iv ever seen! A real life fifa moment...

Best thing about that goal is their defenders all looking around going 'wtf'....quality moment.

Think this result is the performance of the season even though I havent see a game live unless on TV this season...will all change next month though, can't wait...hope we dont suddenly hit a bad spell when I'm back!!

You guess wrong I'm afraid. First half at Ipswich and second half at Leicester were our best performance this season, which is what this thread is about.

Wasn't at Ipswich but the 2nd half at Leicester was unbelievable. Sustained pressure and chance after chance. Schmeichel was top class to keep us out that many times. At home for me it was either Birmingham or Middlesbrough. We controlled both games, and the Birmingham game was won by HT. Would have loved to have seen us go for the throat but it doesn't seem to be NA's style. Get 3-0 up then keep the ball, see the game out and keep everyone fit seems to be his plan A in most games. Not such a bad thing

The lasting memory I have of that game is the disappointment in West Ham, I felt cheated of a game with their hoofball. Middlesbrough has to be the best performance where a great away record was made to look irrelevant by a side and tactics that left them completely stunned. The trouble is when you play so well and shut the opposition out to that degree it tends to lose some of the excitement. That was provided by Ipswich away and Birmingham at home.

Agree with that. To be honest while we were good at Barnsley (the long passing move followed by Guly's missed header from 6 yeards was sublime) I thought they were awful until Chaplow got sent off and made it relatively easy for us.

Considering we'd been quite poor first half against Leicester that second half performace was almost insanely good. We could have scored 5. And yes, Ipswich first half we were almost unplayable.

We were good first half at Ipswich, though I thought they could have easily got a few and their CBs arguably made us look good (just look at how they were then battered by P'boro). Leicester was excellent insofar as we created so many chances against a team happy to shut up shop and you could sense the nervousness and panic in the home crowd.

IMO, though, Barnsley was a total performance - clean sheet and two excellent halves. Agreed the oppo took the shine off things but they've subsequently become difficult to beat on their own patch. In terms of sheer possession and self-belief, Derby was also up there; and for professionalism and grit, West Ham was the most satisfying.

Missed West Ham sadly, Mrs JBS went and was entertained by us but frustrated by WHU negative dull play, I would Say Boro was very entertaining probably primed by the fact that they had been hot away from home up to that point of the season, the face-aching smiles of folks as we walked away from the Stadium also backed up that it was a thoroughly entertaining game.

I have only been to 2 away game Reading and Coventry, I thought Coventry showed our nasty side, if you can call it that, when we ran them ragged first half slipped and gave them a sniff second half, then punched them twice below the belt to sew up what looked an easy win.

The WHU match while a good win was dull dull dull. West Ham didn't come to play football and the game suffered as a result

Our best performance of the season will be our final performance of the season.

Each game as it comes.

Don't count the chickens.

Not yet.

Keep on-board the bus. We have a good honest bunch of players, hard working professionals. 46 games in the season.

We are top of the league after 17 games, yet still more than half a season to play. Stay grounded. Stay focused on the next game.
