Our Biggest Threat

I think Cardiff might snatch the 2nd place and I think Hull will be up there as well. Going to be interesting watching Hull next week as I reckon they're going to give us a game, could be our toughest game at St Marys for a while.

Don't we say this every home game....West Ham, Boro, Brighton were all 'this is going to be a tough game can see us losing out home record' games.

A run of bad form (caused by any number of things, say loss of a key player, loss of morale, addition of a bad apple in the window, the lack of introducing the correct new player in the window, the failure to agree a price for Jos, loss of Adkins, loss of Nicola etc).

Basically, we are our own biggest threat IMO.

I'm sure plenty of people will say it every game. At the same time however, plenty of people will also say we'll probably smash them a new one.

Personally, I think we'll smash them a new one. :)

You can guarentee it'll come against some Sh*tty team that sticks 11 men behind the ball, defend for their lives and sneak a lucky goal on the break.

Cue this place going into meltdown facilitated by Sant_Lard, Alpine and Hypo boring the crap out of all of us with i told you so's, were going to get relegated and Adkins out.

If we dont get promoted from the position we are in Adkins will need to walk imo

i dont see any smiley winky things so i take i that might be a serious comment, if so both parts are silly comments

we are nowhere near far enough through the season to think we are dead certs for promotion

bristol have got a bit of form with there new manager and will not be easy

hull have never been pushovers and are as much of a team then individuals as we are making them a very tough proposition

balckpool are no mugs and can beat anyone on there day and seem to have a habbit of not getting beat which is a worry

plus i personally am getting really worried that we could go to the skates and lose!

none of this takes into account how stong some of the chasing teams areso any talk of promtion before january should result in an 'infraction' and barring from the site until promotion is hopefully assued!

it will get tougher next year so unless we have a 15 point gap over 3rd by then its all to play for and we should just enjoy it

In fairness, this is what most sides have tried doing since the run began. The benefit of spending time in League 1 is that we seem to have learnt how to overcome that. I think the biggest shock would be for a team to come to SMS and retain possession and attack us.

We just have to look out for ourselves injuries might cause a problem but at the moment we look a very very good side we have bounced back from our defeats & got back to winning ways straight away the confidence is sky high.

It would make sense to buy a couple of players in Jan as well as signing Jos but not to many that will upset the togetherness of the squad just compliment it & give us options.

As Saints fans we keep thinking the bubble has to burst but why we have a great side other teams have gone out & won it from the front Sunderland Newcastle & QPR why not us momentum is a great thing & we have it

Our biggest threat could be our away form: 3-3-2

Certainly not the worst but certainly could be better and we're played teams spread throughout the table so no bias there.

Our away form isn't too scary as long as we keep winning at home and as long as we keep picking up points, though a few more smash and grabs wouldn't go a miss.

My opinion is that the only thing that can stop us is an injury to RL. We have options everywhere else, but he gives that that something extra that means we can throw it into the box and he'll bury it or someone will pick up the knock downs. To be able to pass sides to death but also be able to knock it long for him, makes us a real danger going forward.

I really would like to see us push the boat out in Jan and bring in a top quality striker that can play alongside him, or replace him if the worst happenend.

I am starting to believe, because we've played so well. Another 6 games and we're halfway through the season, and I can't recall any shocking performances. There we're a couple where we weren't at our best, but other than that we have been consistantly good. The play off system means that it's hard for a Leicester or Birmingham to put runs together as most teams will always have something to play for, when we reach the turn of the year. It means we just have to show play off form and we're home and dry.Forget about West Ham, I hope they beat the chasing pack everytime they meet. Second is all we need to be playing in the Premiership next season.

We can address that the next 3 away games, Bristol City & Doncaster, both in the bottom two followed by Pompey who although have one 5 at home have only beaten one team in the top half of the table. It wont be easy but we have a great opporutnity for 3 wins, although Pompey will be very tough. If we can keep up our home form as well by NYD there might be a huge gap between us and the chasing pack.

Would people take 2 out of 3 wins, with the loss coming at you know where?

Combine that with 4 points from Hull and Blackpool and we'd be going into Xmas with 49 points. QPR had 41 last season...........

Form goes out of the window in a derby game. It will be played like a cup tie, in a hostile enviroment and anything could happen that day.

As for Bristol City and Donny away, anything less than 6 points would be disappointing.

January & February look really tough to me. If we can come through that in the top 2 then I think we can get straight up.

Worries - away form, losing Rickie, complacancy & expectation..................

I am still pinching myself. As much as VFTT says we will go up, i wont believe it until it happens, but MOMENTUM is a very powerful thing to stop!! And we have that in bucket loads.

I reckon Reading will go on a run and push for an automatic place come spring.

There is always one team who comes out of nowhere, though this year I reckon that will be Leicester. Whilst it won't be much of a surprise they're up there as it was widely predicted they would be at the start of the season, they have had a poor start which has left them with a lot to do.

I was right last season and I'll be right this season. We'll stuff the skates as well with Guly and Lambert scoring.

It's kismet.

GIve it a rest mate. We'll stroll around unchallenged and take liberties all day on and off the pitch, We are Southampton, we win when we want.

The January Transfer window scares me.

This ^

Prem teams coming in for our players and unsettling them. New signings unsettling the squad/taking time to fit in. Guly getting the typical South American 'F*ck me, its cold here in January' loss of form.

NA might be doing a great job - but some things you just can't control.

It is unlikely that we will keep our form the whole season long although I suppose not out of the question, but if a dip comes it is all down to how quickly we can recover.

We had a "mini dip" at the end of Sept - 1 point from 2 games Burnley & Cardiff.

We came back with 6 wins & 2 draws from the next 8 games.

I imagine Donny will have a right tidy little firm out for us. After all, everyone want's to run the big boys...

What these pathetic little firms fail to realise is unlike their local rivals like leeds & Sheffielf United is that we are proffesional thugs, trained to destory. We are a bit like the soilders in the 300. My job just funds my weekend warrioring.

The advantage we have like QPR did in the Championship last season and Brighton in League One to some extent is that their lead was protected partly as there are so many teams that can beat any other team: West Ham, Cardiff, Leeds, Leicester, Birmingham to name a few. Only when a team can find a winning consistency will they be a threat. Norwich managed it last season but not soon enough to topple QPR from top spot.

45 points needed from 29 remaining games that we could lose nearly half of them and still get automatic promotion provided that we keep winning at home. We're in a great situation and I really don't see us blowing it. Need to not tinker with the team too much though. I'd go with the squad we have now + 1 decent CB until the end of the season.
