As I thought, Steve doesn't like his chant, it sounds like more of a **** take, "it's a bit much every time I touch the ball" is a nice way of saying its putting him off his game. Now let's get down to penning him a proper song.....

He never says he doesn't like it, what he says is:

in reply to:

@stief87 does it put you off?

Steve replied:

no not really, but I tink a chant has to stay original and surprising, no?

After being told by a fan they really like it Steve replied:

yeah it is, when I come on, or do something nice or score! Not when I make a one-two....;-)

Stop twisting what is said to fit your own needs, he just feels it is over used.

He wants it used as a celebration when he scores notg everytime he touches the ball. Think that's a great idea personally.
Yeah exactly, good shout that and a fair compromise. Hopefully fans take it on board, I can't believe how anyone can't see how annoying it must be all the time!

It's probably because it's so brilliantly funny he wants to roll around on the floor laughing everytime he hears it, anyone would find it off putting.

"To be fair, I do like the chant, BUT it is a bit much every everytime I touch the ball though..."

Think that's fairly conclusive, that whilst he doesn't mind the chant itself, doing it every time he touches the ball is OTT.

It's an OK chant if it's following his arrival on the pitch, or a decent piece of action, but just not every time he gets near the ball. Remember thinking at the time that it seemed to put pressure/distract him, and seems this was probably the case.

Surely Shoot the Runner has to be the choice for his song.

I'll start us off with the first line.

Steve de Ridder, Steve Steve de Ridder...

THis is by far the best one this forum has come up with, sadly i think we might struggle with it due to being unable to clap like demented seals when being sung.

Hardly twisting words, from the quotes you've used I would understand that he thinks it's not very original and doesn't like it sung everytime he touches the ball.

If he doesn't find it off putting, then he finds it annoying.

Lucky for him we'd got fed up of it by the 80th minute, he was barely getting a mention when he got 5 touches in 15 seconds late on, I had assumed our players were just trying to see how many times they could give it to him in a short time to see if we'd "Steeeve" along to all of them. It had mostly died out by the end.

He doesn't say it's not original, he says that "a chant has to stay original and surprising", meaning he expects it, and it's not a surprise to hear it.

I would say the implication is that he wants it to be for special moments, because if you do it all the time it's not special. Even Lallana doesn't get his songs when he's playing 5 yard passes on the half way line (unless we're already in the middle of one).

The other comments support that theory. Also, no footballer is going to say "I don't like it" unless the alternative is something other than silence.

Top 3 reasons to stop the "Steeeeeeeve" nonsense

1. It sh*t

2. It's annoying

3. the player doesn't like it.

Now drop it out and give the Shoot the runner one a go. FFS.

DO DO DO come on steve de ridder!

(to the conga tune)

would be the best bet?

And it's HI HO, STEVE DE RIDDER, anywhere you go well baby, I SEE DE RIDDER SCORING, but I don't make a fuss, cos it's obvious.

To the tune of 'Hi-Ho Silver Lining' by Jeff Beck.
