david in sweden Posted 20 November, 2011 Share Posted 20 November, 2011 as an extra striker?. A discussion point that's been on-going since January, and not much clearer now. YES - we're all pleased that Rickie got his hat-trick..but what would we do without him? I don't relish that prospect at all. We have good cover elsewhere, but not up top. Glad to see Barnard back of course, but we have to wait to see the score about his court case in March. Connolly out for a few weeks..so that leaves Guly, who performs well when he gets the service. The uncertainty remains that should we have a serious problem up front late in the Spring, then all this good work might well go to waste. We failed to get Billy Sharp, Jay Rod, Maynard (if indeed we ever bid for him?)and all that chat about Jutkiewicz. A quick look at the scorers chart looks great with Ricky on top, but where are these other "targets? " The first three have managed - just 4 league goals each, and Lukas J. has 6. Are we really contemplating paying out £x million for one of these, who have hardly set the league alight - have they? ...so who else do you think might fit the bill? alpine_saint Posted 20 November, 2011 Share Posted 20 November, 2011 Its getting to the point now where any PL irregular/benchwarmer can expect to be back playing regular PL football within 6 months, if they were to jump ship to us in January. Surely for any footballer that still has a bit of integrity, and love for the game as opposed to pure greed motivation, that would be a tantalising prospect ? Especially if said players contract offered a reasonable wage increase if we go up ? I'm thinking a few ~30 year olds doing a McMenemy special and going out in a blaze of glory. Dont follow the PL any more, so dont know the squads and cannot give an example.
S-Clarke Posted 20 November, 2011 Share Posted 20 November, 2011 I think if we sign anyone, it needs to be with a view to playing in the premiership obviously. I wouldn't be keen on signing an experienced premiership head, I'm more for going for a young, pacey championship striker, who has the ability to play in the premier league. Someone who is hungry and desperate to prove themselves. Sordell and Maynard string to mind as 2 young pacy players.
trousers Posted 20 November, 2011 Share Posted 20 November, 2011 We don't need to sign anyone 'high-ish profile'. If we get injuries we can simply tap into our development squad. We've got excellent players in the 16 - 19 year old bracket who are champing at the bit to get a look in. Adkins has proven that he can get the best put of players by focusing on the way we okay as a team and as a squad - it's not about individuals. Turkish Posted 20 November, 2011 Share Posted 20 November, 2011 Why are people so obsessed with having "pacy" players? We are leading scorers by a distance without having one. Its far more imporant to find a player who has a good enough football brain and touch to fit into our style of play rather than a headless chicken who can charge round the pitch for 90 minutes. Turkish Posted 20 November, 2011 Share Posted 20 November, 2011 Yep. People seem to think pace is everything these days, but outside the very best players who have pace and quality, you have a large number who have pace and little end product. Saints aren't slow because they move the ball quickly and play into space, far more important. Lallana isn't slow anyway and is quick with the ball, again more important. I do think a player like Maynard would find himself through on goal quite often if playing in this team though. I think it's because a lot of idiots dont understand football and if a player isn't charging around for 90 minutes, thumping his chest and bleeding through a headband they think they are lazy and not committed. Lambert & Guly two of our three most creative and affective players have been accused of being lazy and useless in the past. I wouldn't say the Barcelona or Spanish national team at the moment have anyone who is particularly quick in them. Still what do we know, "110% effort!! Dont mess about with it get it forward!!! Run Lambert you lazy fat c*nt!" etc etc.

We know that players are very much fitter nowadays and that everyone has to learn to drop back and defend sometimes but as long as the " Rickies and the Gulys" are fit enough to get into the box and score - who cares! Ewell Posted 20 November, 2011 Share Posted 20 November, 2011 Maynards got 2 today He looked very good to me and took both goals very well. He also missed a couple and was disappointed to come away with only 2 goals which shows he knows he can do more. He also can play up top on his own and will give Saints other options if we can get him. I think he also has potential to step up so it is a no brainer as far as I am concerned we should be looking to get him in once the transfer window opens in January. True, but having forward players with lots of pace changes how the opposition has to defend and can help open things up for the whole team. We are doing incredibly well without that at the moment but we may well be in the position to be able to sign someone with pace and skill. That would be yet another big step forward. RinNY Posted 20 November, 2011 Share Posted 20 November, 2011 It's interesting to note that the four strikers we were supposedly really interested in this summer -- Sharp, Maynard, Jutkievizc (sp?), and Jay Rodriguez -- who all stuck with their teams for one reason or another, now find themselves playing for the bottom four teams in the Championship, while we are comfortably in the lead at the top. Anyone think any of those guys might be regretting not moving? What has struck me is the number of strikers Burnley have been stockpiling: Charlie Austin, Sam Vokes, Danny Ings -- what's that all about? Something suggests to me that we may actually have some sort of agreement in place to go back & get JayRod in January. Burnley certainly seem to be getting ready for life without him ... They may be a place for some PL experience I suppose, but the main focus of our transfer strategy should be on the type of young ambitious players you describe. The first game of next season - which we can now dare to hope will be in the Premier League - should be the biggest game our squad have ever faced, and not just another pay day in a career that is on the downslope. I'm quietly confident that NA came to the same conclusion a long time ago.
RobM Posted 20 November, 2011 Share Posted 20 November, 2011 Maynard would be a good bet for the right price - enough of a price to allow City to invest elsewhere in the team to secure their NPC place. I also think he will follow a similar path to Lambert for us, getting better and more confident all the time. I just can't see them letting him go for a price we would want to pay, they will do exactly what NC does and stick a high price on his head and a middle finger up to anybody who comes in lower.
