Saints 3 Brighton 0 - Post Match Chat

Has Gus been on with one of his gracious in defeat talks yet ?

Of course not!!

But I am guessing as I really didn't understand what he was saying!!

He was rabbiting on about the 1st pen - doesn't seem to realise that they were already 1 down and didn't create a chance on goal all game!!

Couldn't quite break them down first half but I always felt that Brighton were playing flat out whereas we still had a couple of gears left. I don't know where you all saw the first half penalties because there was nothing seriously wrong with any of his decisions, unless you're biased. Second half, our first penalty must have been a foul because the lino gave it as well but he didn't put his flag across his chest and Walton never gave him the chance. It might have been on the edge of the penalty area but I'd like to see it again. The second looked like a clear trip to me, but I was 100 yards away.

Kelvin never had a shot to save and Brighton looked what they are, a mid-table team.

Just had a look at that and the only idiots on there are our lot gloating. They won L1 fair and square last season playing superb football, we outplayed them tonight and were lucky to get both our pens (although we should have had at least 1 in the 1st half) but Lambert's 1st was a class, legit goal. 90+% of the Brighton fans on there say we were the better side today - geuinely don't see what your problem is?

Let it go eh?

All the time they are on their site, they are not on here. Clouds and Silver Linings.

2nd Penalty, I've seen it a few times and it's not absolutely certainly whether the Brighton player clips Lambert's heel or not.

I'd say his foot passes beneath Lambert's but suppose the top of his boot could clip the underside of Lambert's studs,RL goes down like a sack of shîte though, guess he fancied his hat-trick.

From the replays I saw on the stream I was watching, the first was a blatant bodycheck on Guly as he went to go round the defender. No attempt to play the ball and every intention of stopping the player getting past him. About as clear a foul as you will ever see. The second one looked like the defender was trying to lift Lambert's shirt off his back (well, he is from Brighton after all!) and I don't see how anybody could watch it and claim it wasn't a foul. There was a handball in the box before these but it was point blank range ball-to-hand and although I've seen them given before, it would have been very harsh.

1st half Rickie nearly lost his shirt being pulled back in the penalty area - not sure how that was missed. I think the ref was trying to even things out later

We seemed to be cruising up to half time and then turned it on after the goal. Can't remember a better time being a Saints fan (and I go back to watching in the 60's ... 1960's)

On another note - do you think Gus actually gives coaching lessons in time wasting and theatrical writhing? ...maybe its part of the South American coaching badge.

Hammond incident - penalty.

Second incident - free kick 3 yards outside.

Third incident - a very realistic, but very actual, dive.

IMO none of the incidents would have changed the outcome of the match, we were picking them apart.

And add to that a couple of wrestling matches on Lambert in both halves.

I see the Brighton fans are as blinkered and bitter as ever: http://www.northstandchat.com/showthread.php?220032-Southampton-v-Brighton-amp-Hove-Albion-****-Official-Match-Thread-****/page33

Did we really have 42% posession today? Not too shabby really when you consider it was 12 v 10 in terms of players for over half an hour and we were 2-0 down with a potential tanning in sight. you need to push on a really hammer teams in that scenario if you're going for promotion, sonny, and it doesn't sound like your boys had it in them - even the third was a dubious pen.

I thought WE were crap in the first half, pretty clueless but Brighton couldn't capitalise on it.Thought the ref was absolutely dire,

if he made 100 decisions today 99 of them must have been wrong,in this case 2 wrongs definitely made a right though.

You don't win the game in the first 45, it's a 90 minute game. Saints played controlled football without opening ourselves up to giving Brighton chances. Give Brighton their due, they defended very well but left themselves toothless up front. We could have forced things more but it would not have surprised me in doing so that we let one in or would have far less for the second half.

Both sides just nullified each other for most of the first half and it restricted chances, but to me we have really grown up with these type of performances where we have stumbled previously. This was a professional performance where Fonte and the full backs tried and did make that little bit of difference to get a goal. I won't comment on the penalties until I have seen the replays but the ref was not that bad, the linesman gave the first penalty.

This is exactly the type of performances that get you promotion, even if we only scored the odd goal. But Brighton would have had to open up and I doubt they would have kept it to one. Give away a first half goal and it's a completely different kettle of fish. Lallana did not do it for us today, Guly was checked but really showed his worth in that position with the work he did. Ricky just gets better and better and stepped up when others could not produce. Ricky gets MOM, but it's very close for me with Fonte, who stepped up to ensure things never ended 0-0.

I was concerned prior to this game because Brighton came and did what they are capable of in the first half. But this is a different Saints over the last handful of games and a game I feel we could have easily been in trouble previously, turned out to be a walk in the park.

Wasen't the best performance but i think even racist Gus will have to agree that we deserved to win. Brighton just came to defend and hope for a smash and grab. So much for them supposedly playing good football.

That said first half we just couldn't get that killer chance. We tried everything. Second half i think is up there with the most luckiest halves i have seen us have. Some really crazy decisions from the ref. The two penalties looked outside to me and if anything Rickie just slipped. But to be fair we had at least 1 defo penalty turned away so it worked out alright. But the ref had a toital shocker.

All in all a win is a win and the bus keeps on going.

1 win in 12 now for Brighton. The wheels have fallen off. If i was their fans i would be more concerned with how your own club is doing, not ours!

From Dagenham to ragging 'em. Lambert obviously man of the match but I thought that Cork and Richardson were excellent too. Richardson's fabulous cross with his wrong foot for the first goal summed up the difference between the two sides - we've got that little bit of inspiration in us at the moment that is getting us in front in games. It's incredible that it's coming from all areas of the pitch. I thought Chaplow was a little bit off his game today but there's not too much else to complain about. As for the penalties, I thought the second one was a foul but the first was a shocking award, at least a yard outside the box. We should have had two others though, so I suppose things evened themselves out. I was surprised at how poor Brighton were going forward though. All of our back five were on their games today but at no stage did Brighton look like they were going to get the ball to stick meaningfully in our defensive third. It merits saying once again - what an incredible time to be a Southampton fan.

He really is a hypocrite isn't he. He talks about the decision ruining the game but yet doesn't talk about the clear cut penalty we should of had before that.

The sad thing is that the decision gives him an excuse of which to deflect criticism from their actual performance prior to that. They didn't attack at all, never had a shot let alone look like scoring. Think they had like 40% possesion or something like that.

We were lucky and the ref made mistakes but they never looked threatening. They would never of scored. The only time Davis was called upon was when he made a hash of that cross that he dropped.

With a bit of luck brighton will continue their bad form long enough for Poyet to be given his p45 & leave football with 1 less racist ( I want the seagulls to finish above the skates )

That's Brighton out the way.

Like with the Bournemouth and Plymouth fans, we had a bit of fun with supposed rivalry, but can move on now.

Top of the league and looking upward.

Loved the 'Top of the league, you're having a laugh' thrown back at them with 'Top of the League. we're having a laugh' !

First half pretty even with neither side penetrating. Second half, particularly after the sending off we played arrogant football.

Irony of the day came when Guly replaced and Brighton player complained he was walking off too slowly!

I saw that too, brilliant :) How there was only a couple of minutes stoppage time in the first time, I have no idea!

On an aside note..did not someone assure me last season that Ryan Harley was the dog's doings and that we should sign him up??

Oh dear,Oh dear what an abysmal player he actually is.

On another aside note CMS would be better off (other than financially) to have stayed at Posh,he's wasted on totally uncreative Brighton.

How Walton missed the shirt pull on Lambert I have no idea right in view of the lino as well in first half.

The penalty was no way inside, Brighton got what they deserved nothing! KD must of hardly broken sweat and cant remember a save being made by him.

Our ball retention and passing at times was outstanding and work rate to get the ball back amazing.

CMS must really be ****ed off he ran everywhere and never had one decent pass all game what a waste - mind you he must have jelly legs he fell over so much!

Credit Poyet for his tactics the first half, stifling our passing game, closing us down, maximum effort to try and be first to every ball. Then hoping to steal a goal on the break from the likes of CM-S. It worked up until half-time. But it seems that Adkins might have changed our tactics to negate theirs and it was always the case that if we scored, Brighton would have to venture forward in search of the equaliser, allowing us to exploit the gaps that they left.

Brilliant cross from Richardson for Lambert's header. Good to see a goal from him from open play, as if I'm correct, it's been a while since he scored from open play at home. But when their player was sent off, instead of becoming difficult to break down the 10 men, as it was against Posh, it became substantially easier. From that time onwards, it was all one-way traffic, massive possession for us, stroking the ball around at will and chances for another 2 or 3 more goals. Dodgey refereeing which might have seen another two more penalties. Top performances from most of the team. Guly, Chaplow (again), Hammond and of course Lambert in particular stood out. Nice to see Barnard back on the pitch. We have so much strength in depth. What is this now? Is it the 19th or the 20th home win in a row? The convincing win against the team that went up as champions last season just illustrates how far we've come since then. Although it is still early days to predict that we will go up as champions, there again, I wonder which team in this division could beat us? At the start of the season, there were several teams we might have been nervous about, but we've beaten them all.

And the Skates losing too, it's one of those perfect days.

Brighton got what they deserved, there were times in the first half there midfield players were marking Lambert and Guly and the center halfs dropped off, nasty South American tactics got them no where in the end. Why CMS left Huddrsfield for that pile of sh*t , who knows.

Thought Jack Cork was immense today and nice to see LB get a run out.

A very close first half. They didn't come here for anything other than a point and that showed. They put men behind the ball, had 2 banks of 4 and it was very hard to break down and penetrate them.

In the 2nd half the goal came at the perfect time - us scoring then opened the game up and from that moment on we took totla control.

Brighton can come out and say the ref won the game for us, but at the end of the day we'd have won that without the ref's intervention.

If they want to win they need to play much better than that. Tactically in the first half they were ok, had a decent shape about them and made it hard work - but in terms of offering any sort of threat they were pants. One of the most toothless teams we've played all year.

Anyway, that ones over with. The Hull game will be much tougher.

Worth a mention, I saw texts stating that the crowd noise could be heard from the West Quay centre. We were loud and proud today. It certainly helps having so many away fans right up against block 42. After Brighton's fans had chanted "top of the league, you're having a laugh", we rammed that down their throat replying "top of the league, we're having a laugh". Not so much of the homophobic chants, or even the anti-Skate stuff, as we were too busy chanting "up the league we go", "can we play you every week?" and even "you'll never play here again".

Great atmosphere once we scored and dominated.

first was debatable, second was nailed on.

Red card was for foul and abusive language. The player was warned to take his protest away and he kept going. So, what the referee did was harsh on the player, but well within the laws of the game. As for the one he missed for Lambert in the second half, it was possibly the most obvious pen this year. So, overall, we cannot think we are lucky, we got two pens, perhaps could have had 4-5.

hard luck Brighton

Firstly the last half hour was as well as we have played all season, even if they had only 10 men. [swearing at a referee is not exactly setting an example, especially if you are the assistant manager].

Regarding the penalties and penalty shouts,I am too far away to be able to comment on the shouts at The Northam End. Second half and sat to the right of the goal from behind. The first penalty foul was outside the box,the second penalty was a blatant trip, the Dean Hammond foul could have gone either way and finally Rickie was stopped even getting off the ground, and that was an absolute stonewall penalty.

Anyway Saints well done for putting Brighton in their place, with a terrific seecond half performance and as for the totally ungracious Poyet saying he did not care about the last half hour[because of the penalty and sending off] and sticking up for Tarrico, that really says every thing you need to know about the man as a manager.

Extremely satisfying win, especially Taricco getting sent off! He always was a dirty cheat - remember him getting Kevin Phillips sent off with some calculating play-acting some years back. Their shots on target - 0, says it all. Nige is awesome, tactically. Just amazed how consistently well we've played since he's been appointed. Great stuff!

I can't remember a team ever offering less going forward than Brighton today. For all Poyet's moaning they never made a chance all day, we were one up when Dunk quite clearly fouled Fonte, whether it was in or out of the area, and yet again we passed a team to death. The way we keep and recycle the ball, calmly and unhurriedly, probing away, trying to draw the defence out and stretch them is way to good for this league. My son pointed out an interesting thing, too - we hardly ever take people on, just pass it around them letting the ball do the work until there is a space to run into. Our style is quite unique - it is not about pace or athleticism or raw talent but all about intelligent, competent footballers understanding what is required as a team and doing simple things well.

(Incidentally, that was our last 3pm on a Saturday league game till 11th Feb - the next five are evening, lunch, lunch, evening, evening.)

Love Gus' interview, he said the ref had a good first half, bet he did with the blatent pens he missed that kept his side in it. Also was he saying that Frazer or Rickie is our best player. But he is such a sour loser! What a result by saints and this home record is something as well, just can't get used to it like others have said just wondering when I will wake up. On the game though Rickie worked his socks off and should have had at least one other pen, Guly is proving to be a great player and Chaplow's runs into the box are quality. Good to see Barnard back too.

It's funny seeing the Brighton fans in meltdown.

Well deserved win, deserved scoreline. Only one team came to play football, and it wasn't Brighton.

I thought we were composed in the face of some cynical and defensive play from the Gus bus parked in the Brighton half.

Too much homophobic chanting today. Particularly embarrassing as they were going hand-in-hand with songs about Poyet being racist. He's ignorant, you're ignorant.

And singing "and now you're gonna believe us and now you're gonna believe us and now you're gonna belieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeve us.....you take it up the arse" sounds like you're bragging about winning someone round to the idea of bum sex. Weird.
