Poyet Pre-Match Quotes

Just watched Poyet's Press Conference, here are the main quotes to summarise:

*Asked about team news and injuries*

"We need to make a deal. I will answer questions but not injuries. I cannot give away any info to the opposition."

"Gary Dicker and Tommy Elphick (are out), all the others are training but some may not be in contention."

"It is not a normal game, it's a special one. They are a Premiership club and are spending a lot of money to get back (to the Prem)."

*Why is it Special?*

"Because of what was said, and last year there was rivalry. But we beat them over 46 games, which is an achievement."

"We are now on the other side. Nigel will feel how I felt for 6 months. Everyone wants to beat the leaders. With their record at home, blah, blah, blah."

"I do not believe that one game says who is better. England is not better than Spain, but England won."

*Asked about what Saturday's result may show*

"Winning or losing to Southampton does not say who is better or worse over 46 games."

"This is a nice game. Two weeks ago must win, now it is not."

"But right now, now Southampton are the best team in this league. By far."

*Asked about Palace and Southampton in comparison*

"To the fans the Palace derby is more important. For me, Southampton is. Because Southampton are a better team than Palace."

"This is the biggest game so far. Bigger than West Ham because the leaders is always the biggest game."

*What do you think of Nigel Adkins?*

"I know him well, I did my Pro Licence with him. He's a great man and has done a terrific job. He would win 49 out of 50 competitive games."

"Unfortunately Nigel had Brighton last season."

"He had only one problem. Not his style or his tactics or his players. He was not better than Brighton."

"They play good football. That's why they are top of the league. Whether top or bottom I always say, the table never lies and people who doesn't think that is true because they believe in, I cannot say... Father Christmas. Don't put that."

*Why have Southampton been able to carry their form over?*

"Because they played 46 games in League One with Championship players."

--END--

Wow - he really must have huge respect for Dagenham & Redbridge - maybe as things go from bad to worse at Shyton (especially now team moral will be at an all time low after he dissed Father Xmas FFS), he will be sacked and end up at his spiritual home and put in a bid for SRL and take them to The Prem.

Can't see any problem with those quotes. Fair and balanced - very reasonable and respectful. And obviously a lot of respect for Nigel Adkins.

Completely agree nothing in there but complimentary quotes and banging the drum for his own club. Obviously has respect for where we are and wants a good game. Some will make something out of nothing though.

Fair enough, although if you start both team on 0 points when Nige took over we would have won the league easily. Sounds to me more a case of 'I better reign in my comments a bit as I reckon we are gonna get smashed all round St Marys', fingers crossed

That's a brave thing to say for a manager, I kind of understand why he is saying it, you'd have thought he would have at least played lip service to the rivalry for the supporters. I hope NA isn't going to say something like that about the pompey games. As a fan you want to believe that the players and manager are up for it in a derby game (even if in truth they couldn't care less)

Right that's that sorted... he is presumably at this very moment giving an interview giving Saints fans the thumbs up to continue singing the songs that we know will be sung at every Brighton game, and tell his fans to stop being such er ... umm .. er .... drama queens if I am allowed to say that without running the risk of being arrested!!

I would imagine Adkins will treat them as just another game. Let us lot get overexcited about it whilst the players stay calm aand play as they would on any other day.

In The Build up Interview on Saints Player Nige says we have 2 injury concerns, 1 defo non starter, 1 still being looked at, but won't name names!.

Do we really have any doubts on key players or is Nige just pulling Gus's gusset.

Yes I think the monkey boy fails to point out that when Nigel took over :-

The seaweed had 10pts from 5 games, (2 pts from the top with a game in hand).

Meanwhile Saints (after the MK Dons game) had 4pts from 6 games.

I.e we were 6 pts behind but only finished 3pts behind from 1 less game.

He might not be as obsessed as some on here

Think we should just put it to bed... its just another game now. Last season, Gus took Adkins comments completely the wrong way and reacted badly - but his side won the league and lets be honest, did take their foot off the gas a little in the last few games - would have been better had its say still been a 3 horse race till the end, but thats history.

His comments and in the interview on the BBC website seem normal and respectful - sure he is probably playing afe mind games too, but thats is part of teh pre match game these days - afterall I am sure Adkins might have known what reaction his comments would receive, even if it was more acase of bigging us up and letting everyone know we had not given up on the chase

Hopefully, Gus will be true to word and try and play good football this year and not park the bus and we could be in for a cracking game. The more pressure and OTT the build up, the more it becomes like a cup game...

Treat it as a normal fixture, play as we have been and we shoudl win given their current form.

Fair play to Poyet, top manager that took brighton from no where to deserved winners of L1 last season, playing class foitball too. Complimentary quotes from him there, clearly wary of us so expect time wasting from the 1st minute, diving, injury feigning and card waving too.

My only issue is his quote on our spending as I guarantee that in the last 18 months our net spend is far less than Brighton's.

Is that really true...I didn't see much evidence of it last season. Though Poyet's first game in charge at SMS they played some good stuff.

Depends on one's definition of class football I suppose. When they played us they frustrated us from the start, we ran about like loons closing them down like sides do against Arsenal. But, like sides against Arsenal, we couldn't sustain it for 90 minutes and in the end were lucky to get a point thanks to their penalty.

I loved their patient build up, close passing, refusal to hit it long, always willing to play out from the back and general ticca Tacca (sp) style, but then I also love watching Barca and arsenal as they play football I deem as "classy".

I didn't like the time wasting, card waving rubbish.

Have to also say that the football we have played this season is better than anything I saw of Brighton last season.

Agree 100% with you here, although it isn't to everyones taste, they were retaining possession passing around the back looking for an opening and then had a couple of good outlets especially down the right side. Was it the fella that went to Palace that came on and we were all over the place for 10 mins (think that is around when they got the pen)

I also agree that our football this year is on another level as most of our good passing comes higher up the pitch and think we get more opportunities as our movement is better as well
