see you in six weeks then,

dont tell me you actually believe that ****

Na,I'm only having a laugh.....it was all tongue in cheek.

The whole thing is a joke,If the Brighton fans are offended then they must also be offended by 'little Britain' or going even further back,**** emery as honky tonk.

Somebody somewhere will always be offended by something,so the police should direct their resources at more pressing needs instead of wasting time on the petty pc brigade.

that is an absolute disgrace, best of luck to the lads or lasses caught up in the Rick Burrows career publicity campaign, as some else pointed out on here the bible is more homophobic than the "we can see you holding hands" song, when up in court they should say i cannot swear on the bible due to what it stands for.

Hants football police are an absolute waste of space.

you can also guarantee they will have to go to court and not get a caution for no other reason than the OB obsession with giving out banning orders and topping up there statistics to get the budget signed off for next year.

Let's not forget we've the Euros around the corner so the OB will be after a big juicy case as per 2002.

I bet they're praying for some serious SFC/Skate disorder ready for a May trial and June sentencing.

Completely agree mate, complete waste of tax payers cash. Best keeping a low profile nowadays.

We've got a celebrity copper who loves his face in the media, Burrows thinks he is the modern day Ellott Ness FFS. We've got a European Championships coming up. Hants Old bill need to keep their football banning orders specialist happy and with funding being cut then they'll need to make sure they get plenty of banning orders in.

Didn't hear this chant, but I have to say I enjoy a couple of meaty faggots inside me and can't really understand why people dislike them so much? Their hot, salty, rich sauce slips down the throat easily and always leaves me wanting more.

Bonus. It even makes emphasis of the PORK content too. ;)

In response to my email posted earlier in this thread, Supt Burrows has actually replied very quickly. According to him some of us have been much more abusive and homphobic than I had previously realised. Thereore I can understand the pre-match publicity. I still stand by my opinion that much of the chanting should only offend those Brighton fans with homophobic tendencies, but if there is more threatening and derogatory chanting coming from our fans then I am happy for those fans to be punished.

Email from Supt. Burrows:

Dear StDunko

Thank you for your query.

There does appear to be a disconnect between what a number of Football supporters think is "banter" and what others (both fans and other members of the public) think as homophobic comments. The police have a clear duty to intervene where that chanting / baiting / comments breach any criminal statute.

The last Southampton v Brighton game , I received a number of complaints after the match from Brighton fans who were subject to directed abuse by some Southampton fans far worse than some of the suggestions you put forward. They found it hugely offensive and complained that both Police and Stewards did nothing about it despite it being so obvious. I must react to that and ensure Police and stewards actively listen and that we and the club respond to it. I also need to ask fans to self-police or at least inform us if something is going on.

There is no clear delineation between "banter" and criminal breach of statute and as such we (the Police) must assess the nature of the languauge / intent etc before deciding how we respond.

I am not sure I agree with some of your reasoning around how such chanting is directed against homophobes, I don’t think it is that sophisticated , I think it is simply to wind up the other fans. However , the effect is far wider than that as a number of people , both gay and straight , found the chanting offensive. There were also clear examples given of far more offensive language and behaviour directed at the Brighton crowd / individuals than you mention.

Whilst I do not want to undermine the culture that is football ( and as a huge fan myself wish to protect) , there are some things that are unacceptable. I am not sure that anything to do with race or colour would be so interpreted and the game has invested a huge amount of effort in erradicating that sort of bigotry (though the current headlines around player abuse questions if it is as successful on the pitch as it has been on the terraces).

Policing / Stewarding football isnt an exact science , but we try to find that balance between maintaing an enjoyable event and balancing the often conflicting demands of fans.

Its still a great game and part of our culture !
