Cortese Meal Wednesday

Saint Garrett

Recommended Posts

would be good for someone to take pictures with them of other grounds that have flags on display and ask him why the saints safety officer can't be arsed with the paper work so saints fans can have one as well.

the ticket news - why they make fans jump through hoops to get away tickets., especially those who don't live in southampton.

how much profit do the club expect to make from the bubble trip buses to Fratton? how did they do the costing?

No one will ask challenging questions, that's why Cortese holds these cosy little dinners with hand picked fans. It will be an evening fine dining, wine and copious obscene bum kissing.

Hand picked based on their name, season ticket number and games attended? He doesn't have their employment history or CRB forms, christ.

If that you mean that people are more likely to ask civil questions when they are being hosted at a dinner by a man sat 6 feet away, listen to the answers and ask follow ups than posturing at public meetings -then you are probably right. Interested in how Cortese only gets hand picked bum kissers long - some kind of survey when you buy a ticket? professional headhunters for bum kissing Saints fans maybe?

I thought it was better when they held open forums where anyone can ask questions and the replies from the horses mouth were reported in black and white.

With these cosy dinners you just get rumours about what was said so there can be no direct quotes - you can only guess what was really said, plus the people who attend are put in a situation where it would be rude to ask really challenging questions. And yes, I bet there are not many Northam stand ST holders from Shirley invited.

I agree, they should do both. You do get nutjobs at the forums but they have just as much right to ask questions as those at these meals. Plus it's not hard to spot those with agendas.

Things are going well now so it is not a big deal but if in 3 years time we are sold to a Russian gun-runner we might look back and wonder why no one actually asked what their plans for the club were.

Says he until he gets asked ;)

Exactly, if Cortese buys me a nice dinner and gives me wine I'm not going to be rude and bust his balls about some ticket tax or parking charges.

That's why the public forums are a good idea, let the sad mongs ask the awkward questions and everyone hear the answers.

Which, talking metaphorically, is exactly what he deserves! We're top of the league FFS (and i know it's not all down to him, but he deserves a large portion of the credit)! How people can have a moan about ticketing.. Yes, the website's rubbish, but I thought that was because the club were tied down to a long contract with the provider (signed pre-Cortese) which has an insanely expensive get-out clause. And regardless of this, when I want to find something out about ticketing, I call and I always get the answers I need. It's not difficult. To the people moaning, have you ever thought the problem might lie with YOU? I'm starting to think some of you are skates on a wind up.

I bet it's also based on postcode. I wonder how many people with ST's in the Northam or Kingsland, that live in Maybush have had an invite?!

Yeh I was thinking along those lines...I'm sure they wouldn't just pick randomers out of a hat must be more to it...he wouldn't wana do a nice dinner with some nutjobs which could easily happen.

Sounds good to me. I take it you'll be giving us all the heads up when we're allowed to challenge the club again? You don't have a problem with what has happened to the flag Saints fans contributed £ks to? Or the way away ticketing is managed? It defeats the whole purpose if its just NC charming a very small handful of hand picked fans - what does that achieve? How does that benefit us collectively?

To be fair would you want to spend an evening with Kev and Bianca from Shirley?

I would say it's more likely held to benifit him/the business. Which in turn will eventually benifit us collectively.

What a pointless exercise these meals are. It needs someone to take a dictaphone.

Well, judging by your contributions; we've already got a dictapost.

I don't have a problem with ass-kissing, Cortese more than deserves it, he has done a wonderful job.

I don't have a problem at all, just think the fans forum was more transparent which can only be a good thing.

A comment like this detracts from the points you raise.

1. The flag - yes, this is an issue (I paid £50 lol!), but I cannot believe it's the club that's the sticking point; what possible motive can they have not to want it displayed? In my opinion, and as has been mentioned before, it's more likely that the risk of fans complaining/wanting money back because the flag interrupted their view for the opening period of the match is the issue. So the moaners and the blame, blame, blame culture are the problem, IN MY OPINION. I accept we should have had better communication.

2. The ticketing - as I said in my previous post, I've never had a problem with the ticket office when I've called with a query. And to deviate slightly, our prices are also mid-range when compared to others in the Championship, as shown by the BBC article published at the season outset.

3. The Cortese evenings - I have a funny feeling that the people moaning about them happening would moan if they didn't happen. Also, for the record, I know someone who sits with me (in the Northam) who has an invite.

And finally, talking of the benefit to fans collectively (I acknowledge you didn't mention this in this context but I believe the point is still valid), can you really complain about the bigger picture? We're a football club, consider the football; just look at where the team is and where it has ambitions to go. Do you not think fans of most other clubs in the country would despair at Saints fans moaning about their Chairman hosting a dinner for fans?

And a perfectly fair point you make, sir. I apologise for assuming you were one of the Cortese-bashers :)

Yes I agree. It is a real shame that more fans are not able to get direct answers to questions. The flag issue is particularly sad.

I have to agree re: the flag. How that's been handled is **** poor.

The fans stonked up the cash, organized it to be built, we hand it over to the club and that's it. They ignore any queries about it and it hasn't been seen since. That's a load of **** tbh.

It's not even the fact it hasn't been used that is the issue, it's that we have no idea when it will be used again and there is no communication from the club over the issue except to say (finally) that it will be used at some vague point in the future health and safety permitting. Not good enough.

Just because the team are flying high and the club are clearly doing a lot of things right, it shouldn't mean that supporters/customers shouldn't be able to question certain decisions. If nothing else, to understand why a particular decision has been taken. The fans forums of the past at least served the purpose of making the fans think that their views were at least being heard.

Fans forums are not exclusive to Saints; they're very common across football. It is not running the club down to ask a few probing questions, and I don't quite understand why people are so precious that they think a hard-nosed businessman like Cortese needs to be shielded from some nasty things that fans might say.

The topic of discussion at fans forums is very rarely the actual activity on the pitch, it's everything that surrounds the on-pitch action. Just because we're doing well on the pitch I don't see a reason to whitewash the situations where we could be doing better. It certainly can't help to at least encourage discussion about it. For instance, I would be very interested to hear a reason why coach tickets for the Pompey game cannot be mailed out; this will potentially inconvenience a significant number of people who want to go to the game. There has been no reason offered by the club, and I can't actually think of one either (other than it was a police order to do so, which I think unlikely). Opening a dialogue for these issues between club and fans can only be a good thing.

Why do you think it is "unlikely" it was on police orders? This is how bubble games have worked throughout the country in the past.

The non-mailing out of tickets is the issue; because I have heard that not all bubble games have worked like this in the past. For instance West Ham v Cardiff, Cardiff fans who lived in England could choose to have their coach tickets sent to them and rather than get a coach from Cardiff, pick up the coach from a service station on the M4.

I didn't say at any point that supporters shouldn't be able to question club decisions; I simply challenged people as to the basis on which they were questioning certain club decisions. I then backed this up by (effectively) asking whether others fans in the country were likely to share my view, which I believe they would.

I guess what gets me more than anything is some people's apparent need to moan (and me ending up moaning about the moaners)! It's impossible to satisfy all the people all the time on all issues, but Saints are getting pretty damn close at the moment. Just be grateful for that. COYR!!
