theyin Posted 15 November, 2011 Posted 15 November, 2011 Sorry Mods Just a quick note to those who might not venture over into the lounge where this rightly belongs, and particularly those that hit the town in the late fifties and sixties, and any one else interested in music for that matter - a Southampton legend of the stage in the early days of Rock'n'Roll. Ricky Brown sadly died at the weekend, a performer to the end. RIP RICKY BROWN - your Dad or Grandad will know him Here's a link to the lounge thread http://tinyurl.com/83v4693 I know, not quite on Saints but he did support them
Norm Posted 15 November, 2011 Posted 15 November, 2011 Sad news. Really nice man. I saw him often when I went into Oxfam in Shirley.

Toomer Posted 15 November, 2011 Posted 15 November, 2011 Didn't they do a cover of the Beatles' "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" ? Yes and they got a version of Eddie Holmans Hey There Lonely Girl into the charts, Beau Dinage (who was in BSD) has a version of it on You Tube.
derry Posted 15 November, 2011 Posted 15 November, 2011 One of my pals used to transport Ricky and the Hi Lites around in his big old prewar Vauxhall 14 in the late fifties. RIP
rocknrollman no2 Posted 15 November, 2011 Posted 15 November, 2011 Shame Rickys passed away.RIP. I never had the pleasure of seeing Ricky Brown live, but did see Tex Roberg quite a few times at the Bridge Inn at Woolston in the mid/late 70s.Thats when Southampton had a lot of live groups, especially at the Guildhall where you could see proper rock n roll.Nowdays theres no decent live bands around Southampton.
Toomer Posted 15 November, 2011 Posted 15 November, 2011 Rick used to do a great version of Bill Withers Ain't no Sunshine.

um pahars Posted 22 November, 2011 Posted 22 November, 2011 Only just noticed this thread. My parents knew him (and Roly) well and I used to school with his son Sasha. Very nice fella and certainly a part of the furniture going back a few years according to my Old Man.
Toomer Posted 23 November, 2011 Posted 23 November, 2011 Just got back from Ricks funeral all I can say is what a great turn out, standing room only his nephew Steve did a fantastic speech and that played him out to Stand By Me, Benny King. If you new Rick in his younger days Sasha is a double of his dad.
