Brussels Saint Posted 14 November, 2011 Share Posted 14 November, 2011 (edited) The general thinking has been that our current squad did not cost us that much (relative to stated ambition) to put together in terms of transfer fees. I've often thought this was not the case remembering quite a few players who fell into the 1m+ bracket and if you add it all up, I bet its pretty substantial. As such below I've compiled a basic list from memory. Feel free to edit it where I've made an error. Based on what we've spent could you not argue that actually being top should be expected? Davis -1m Richardson - 450k Fonte - 1.2m Hooiveld - 1.4m (If he does actually sign and based on current estimates) Fox - 1.8m Chaplow - 50k Cork - 750k Schneiderlin - 1m Lallana - Free Lambert - 1m Guly - 1m Hammond - 400k De Ridder - 900k Harding - Free Connolly - Free Barnard - 175k + duff youngster Butterfield - Free Martin - 90k + Bag of Balls or something Bialkowski - ? Dickson - 250k Holmes - Free Punch - 300k? Seabourne - 250k Stephens - 150k Total = 12-13m Approx Might also be more interesting to compare this with what they are actually worth if we sold them today. Matthew Le God Posted 14 November, 2011 Share Posted 14 November, 2011 No-one outside the clubs involved really has any idea how much a number of those cost. In particular Guly Do Prado, De Ridder and Cork. Dickson didn't cost £500k. It was like this... £125k upfront £25k after 10, 20, 30 and 40 appearances £25k after promotion to the Championship Most in total it will cost is £250k. Holmes was a free agent. Richardson was £450k according to Charlton. Can add Jack Stephens who cost £150k according to Plymouth's CVA.

SaintAndy14 Posted 14 November, 2011 Share Posted 14 November, 2011 Schneiderlin didn't cost anywhere near £1m. £250k tops. I always thought he was around the 1m mark as remember signing him at the time when we had little money and thinking waaat! Mind you you probably know more than me Steve! aintforever Posted 14 November, 2011 Share Posted 14 November, 2011 Based on what we've spent could you not argue that actually being top should be expected? If you did the same for the whole league there would be plenty of squads that cost similar/more.
Matthew Le God Posted 14 November, 2011 Share Posted 14 November, 2011 Guly - 1m De Ridder - 900k I don't recall even seeing even a rumour in the press of the figures for these two, let alone an exact figure.
saintmatt Posted 14 November, 2011 Share Posted 14 November, 2011 In my opinion the most valid point was made in the first response; the net spending figure should be given the most weight. Otherwise you could equally argue we've lost £12-15m worth of talent this season yet still sit top of the league. Likewise, a company's revenue figure is only given meaning once compared to it's costs.

Village Saint Posted 14 November, 2011 Share Posted 14 November, 2011 Based on what we've spent could you not argue that actually being top should be expected? Err NO. Leicester, West Ham and Mideelsborogh to name but three will have all spent much more on a handful of players. And didn't Brighton pay nearly half of this for one player! sidthesquid Posted 14 November, 2011 Share Posted 14 November, 2011 I would have thought that £12 million for a squad of 25 players (btw you missed out Forte £200k) would be reasonably modest by Championship standards

Johnny Bognor Posted 14 November, 2011 Share Posted 14 November, 2011 (edited) According to the link, the value of our squad is 15th in the Championship http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/championship/startseite/wettbewerb_GB2.html .. and here is our squad broken down by player http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/southampton-fc/startseite/verein_180.html Proof that money doesn't buy success........because when you put it into perspective, Doncaster have a more valuable squad. Johnny Bognor Posted 14 November, 2011 Share Posted 14 November, 2011 Someone who estimates Butterfield and Lallana are both 875k. So someone who knows nob all about football. Lambert 1.1m too. Very much doubt we'd accept 5m given how important he is, and Guly would be 2m+ at the moment, but again, unsellable right now. But we've still spent less than Brum, West Ham, Leicester, Boro and even Burnley, yet we are riding high.
stardustonmyfeet Posted 14 November, 2011 Share Posted 14 November, 2011 The Schneiderlin fee was the weirdest transfer in a long time. Everyone was expecting Schneiderlin to be decent, and he was. Weirdest transfer that season has got to be Mr Forecast. 4 year contract, the shame!
SaintBobby Posted 14 November, 2011 Share Posted 14 November, 2011 Surely, you have to measure net spend...not gross spend. E.g. the sale of AOC should add £12m+ to our balance sheet. Seems to me we have possibly made a net profit on transfers since Liebherr bought the club. If not, then we have certainly spent small. If some schmuck wanted to buy Tony Pulis off us for £100m, I don't think it should count against us if we then spent £80m on transfers ourselves. On the basis of net transfer spend, I think you'd expect Saints to be in the bottom 5 or 6 in the NPC. Wages, however, are a different matter...
