Playing Phil Jones in midfield instead of proper midfielders shows the power being at a big club has on your international chances. IMO. When Saints are one of the big four, Lallana, Shaw, Ward-Prowse and, erm, Jack Stephens will look good plying their trade for England...

lallana in for milner in that team would certainly allowed some balls forward that might have stuck allowing the rest of the midfield to get forward in support. Most of the game as soon pass was played into a wide position it was lost. a bit tongue in cheek maybe but i dont think he would of looked out pf place tonight

Thought England were very poor to be honest. I think Saints play techinically better football. If you studied the game closely none of our players were making angles to receive passes, or playing between the lines and there was hardly any clever movement off the ball which is why we looked so ponderous. To be fair we could not string two passes together and only won because it was a meaningless friendly and Spain played several gears below there normal standard. Even then they played all the flowing football that was on display. Don't know how we can rely on the likes of Milner and Barry who are just workhorses. We looked better when the likes of Wellbeck, Rodwell and Adam Johnson came on but we're kidding ouselves if we think that prehistoric style of football will ever win a major tournament.

Im sure he played quite alot of his blackburn career in midfield

A lot of his career means less than 35 games for Blackburn. I know it was a friendly, but for a player who's been playing centre back (and a bit of right back) for Man Utd, to be chosen over talented, possibly more experienced, midfielders smacks of the big club syndrome. Either that, or we have a distinct lack of English defensive midfielders. Again, IMO.

everyone in Sweden all hyped-up on the game v. England tonight.

Sweden seem to do much better when playing their open, attacking style as when they beat the Dutch last month...and without Zlaten.

The guy is a real enigma. Recently won Swedish Footballer of the Year title for the 5th time. Has been Milan's saviour on may occasions this season and scores the most amazing goals out of nothing, but the Swedes never seem to get it together as a team when they play with him.

Erik Hamren (new manager) isn't the traditional dyed-in-the-wool type Swede and so I expect to see some surprise tactics .

RESULT ?..IF they play WITH.. Zlaten Ibrahimovitch - (from a Yugoslav immigrant family), he may score ...but it will be a draw.

WITHOUT him.. be prepared for some surprises. Anders Svensson and Kim Källström in MF are really good together (at last), and front men like ;

Elmander, Toivanen, Elm, and Seb Larsson can be a real handful on their day. Win for Sweden ?...unlikely but it wouldn't surprise me ..if ...

The same with playing Smalling at RB, when Micah Richards doesn't even get in the squad. All very strange.

I thought England looked more like Saints in all honesty. Good mix of short and long (but always accurate) passing, closing the ball down quickly, solid defending. I've been hugely critical of Capello recently but that was a faultless performance.

I thought England were awful, and they were utterly embarrassed from a technical perspective, despite actually winning the game. Equally, Spain only play like Barcelona without Messi, they are unlike any other side due to their excessive use of the 1-2 in midfield, Saints are part of that group of "unlike any other side".

Oh, and if anyone thought Phil Jones played well, have a look at the 90 minutes again, he barely has any effect at all on Spain's passing and only managed to advance with the ball once, when allowed acres of room - then Spain took off Iniesta and Xavi, and without them the entire format of their passing and build up changes - until then England were third rate, after that, it was a contest against half of the World Champions' reserves, with their midfield missing.
