Just scored 2 for Wales. 6ft 2" born in Lymington. Is he a Saints fan? Maybe one for the bus if Wolves dont rate him?

Thought he was born in Southampton actually, but brought up in Lymington.

This....

This has been done to death so many times.

...and this....

Couldn't we just have him on the board instead?

...would Rickie have scored the goals that he scored today - quite possibly. Didn't see anything in him that we don't already have better of.

he's not playing for Wolves and will score goals in the Championship - so I'd bring him in on loan now and see where it goes from there in January.

We need a couple of young powerful strikers around the 22 age bracket with potential and the ability to score goals at this level - Connolly at 34 and with his injury record isn't going to last forever - that Leaves Do Prado and Lambert who are both 29/30 and Barnard who is 26/27.

Vokes and Juktiewitz would fit the bill whether they were Saints fans or not - much like Jay Rodriguez. The fact they are both Saints fans is just a big plus - they would give a little bit more and care a lot more than most players - and how good would it be to see either score against Pompey!

I don't get why so many people want Vokes. Other than being a Saints fan he has nothing going for him. His best season was the year we went down from the Championship and Vokes had a worse scoring record than David McGoldrick. This despite playing for a league winning side, instead of a bunch of relegation strugglers.

In short. He's crap.

Will he?! Either you've got some kind of futuresight or you don't know how to read football stats.

2006–2008 Bournemouth 54 (16)

2008– Wolverhampton Wanderers 47 (6)

2009 → Leeds United (loan) 8 (1)

2010–2011 → Bristol City (loan) 1 (0)

2011 → Sheffield United (loan) 6 (1)

2011 → Norwich City (loan) 4 (1)

6 clubs, 0 impressive scoring records. So like I said, you're either mystic or you're basing that comment on absolutely nothing. Hell, before tonight he only had 2 in 18 on international level.

If he wasn't an alleged Saints fan, there'd be next to nobody on here wanting him to sign. Fact.

Posted

I've started enough threads saying we should sign him...

Still - consider this. Potential. He proved at Bournemouth that he could finish and had an eye for goal - so paired up with Nigel's wisdom and self belief he could kick on - BIG time. Wolves saw enough in him to sign him - and FFS he's playing international football and scoring - what more do you want???

Two other players who weren't prolific when they started (ignore Shearer's debut)? Alan Shearer and James Beattie...he's that type of player.

And whilst you are so keen on facts, how many of the above stats were substitute appearances. He certainly hasn't started 18 games for Wales.

Vokes is 22. Still fairly young, but not a teenager anymore. If you want to say he has potential, he really should be showing a bit more by now. Besides which, you can hardly say he has improved since he played for Bompey 4 years ago. Potential is just a lable you can stick on anyone remotely young. Quoting players who were young 20 years ago doesn't prove anything either. Beattie and Shearer weren't prolific when they started and neither were a whole load of sh*t players.

And yes he might be playing international football, but so is Jonathan Forte.

Then why weren't these teams starting him? Maybe because... brace yourself... he wasn't good enough?

Typical of this forum to write a player off! You cant says hes not good enough based on his history in this league. He hasnt had a consistent run of games for one club to base his ability on stats. He is a good player, fact. Working with Adkins and with the amount of chances we create, i think he would do well.

42 appearances for Wolves in 08/09. 8 Goals.

Works both ways though there is no real evidence that he'd be fantastic for us either, you could point to not getting a consistent run of games as proof that something is not right.

Strange post, you clearly don't know them.

Indeed I've known Tim since the late 70's when he used to travel to away games on Foley's coaches.

Saw Tim last year on way to Dagenham & Redbridge and in the Greyhound before the game at Coventry game last week.

He used to follow us home and away in the late 70' early 80's, and have never hear dhim mention any likling for Utd.

That's what his girlfriend told me.

So you speak to his girlfriend but have clearly never met or spoken to him or his Dad, as Old Sarum points out (his Dad was a regular away throughou the 90s as well), i suggest you have your wires crossed or perhaps are mistaken to which player she is the girlfriend of.

Oh no, definitely Sam Vokes, but from this I assume that one of us is mistaken on his Dad. However, she is adamant that although Sam used to follow the team as a local side, he is a United fan for sure.

You're correct though, I have never met him or his Dad, and effectively it is 3rd hand information. However, I can't see after a quick scroll down this list that anyone has asked him or his Dad what side Sam supports.

Well having spoken to his dad at Dagenham away last season, discussed Sam moving here and his dad saying "he'd love to, he'd run through walls for Saints" and having seen him with his old man at games in the 90's and early 00's i think i can safely assume he is a Saints fan. Although Tim never actually said "he'd run through walls for Saints, he's a Saints fan"

My son played for Sway boys with Sam, Tim was always their to watch him & i can assure you that they are both Saints fans through & through, as was Sam's younger brother. Haven't seen either for a few years now though.

You couldn't be more wrong, i used to go away with tim sam and matt and they are all saints fanatics. They despise manure

Even back in 1900, Saints did not limit themselves to local players and it would make no sense to start now. There will be local players spotted at a young age and bought through the Academy but after that you want the best players available to you regardless of where they are from. As an example, we have a decent CB in Aaron Martin who may well graduate from squad to first team regular in time, but we have a better CB in Hayfield.

Posted

Vokes is probably a decent enough player, but I feel that people are sticking up for him and saying we need him because he's a saints fan.

We should only be targeting players that are better than what we have, with a view to playing premiership football. Vokes is no where near Premiership quality, and I've watched him a fair few times.

It was 47 and 43 of those were as a sub. So as i said, he has not had a consistent run of games!

So in 43 sub appearances he apparently never showed anything to warrant a place in the starting line up.

Vokes and Jutkiewicz up front,Wade Elliott and Brian Howard in midfield, any more Saints fans for the team ? Lee Bradbury as assistant manager.

Andrew Surman

Wayne Bridge

Maik Taylor

Or Ebanks-Blake & Iwelumo were prolific that season and kept him on the bench.

Another one who should have stayed with us (Bompey) a bit longer. Such a shame when they jump ship too early - even though we were probably paying him peanuts.

Thought the stats for our games were ok, considering the age he was back then. Agree though that I think you should be looking higher than him tbh.

I don't post often but I have just been informed by Sam vokes' uncle that he is in talks with saints over a permanent move.. I know Sam vokes has been done to death on this forum and there has been much speculation over a move to st mary's..watch this space.
