Plastics Or Not?

Apologies, but I don't give a shiny sh*t what you think but I accept your choice on language regarding "better" and "loyal".

Well, from that, I guess I should be grateful enough that your sh*t was shiny enough to elucidate such a reasoned response. Although it's somewhat ironic that, despite, the outburst, you kind of agree with me.

I stand by it though; there are many more loyal fans who follow SFC than me, and I guess you too. But the whole "I'm a better fan than you" business just based on games attended is an avenue that I find truly embarrassing, with the whole season ticket waving episodes we're still seeing.

I will always maintain that anyone who regularly goes to games has a much, much better opinion of the state of the team, and I'm much more inclined to listen to their opinions on here than someone who hasn't been. I think that's pretty obvious though, and I hope you understand that's not the point I was making in the first place. I guess I just have a natural disposition against the standard "my support is better than yours" argument.

As long as the person in the seat is there to support Saints does it really matter how often they attend games, which games they choose to see? Isn't the idea of home support exactly that? It doesn't matter if they manage to see one game a Season or every game. Whether it comes down to finance, locality, employment, free time, or the opposition, does it really matter as long as they are supporting the Saints along with everyone else?

I've been a Season Ticket holder on and off for the last 25 years, some years I can afford it, other years I can't, it's all dependant on what sacrifices I have to make for my family and myself, whether because of my job, an improvement to my home, a luxury purchase or a long awaited holiday. Do the years between when not having a Season Ticket and picking the games I want to go to whether glamorous or not mean that I'm a "Plastic" fan during those times? No it doesn't, because I'm there to support Southampton, my home team, my club, my choice.

There have also been times when as a Season Ticket holder I have other friends who aren't. On more than several occasions I have had to hand my Season Ticket into the Box Office and be given a zero value matchday ticket in exchange as we could not get seats together where I usually sit, afterwards I am able to reclaim my Season Ticket and return to my usual seat for the next game. Something the Season Ticket wavers maybe should consider when there maybe others who they don't see in "their block" every week that may have/had a Season Ticket longer and/or supported the Saints longer than they've been alive?

I really don't know where all this "I'm a better fan than you" crap has suddenly come from and I find it quite pathetic, as long as the fans that turn up in numbers week in and week out are there to support the Saints I don't see what the issue is.

If these so called "Super Fans" are so upset now about irregular attending Saints fans turning up to support us when we're not selling out each week, I can't wait to see how they'll react when we get back to the Premier League and opposition fans start jumping up and down in the home stands when they score as they've done in the past in sold out games... how different will our own Saints Supporting, Non Season Ticket holders be viewed then that are currently being mocked because they don't go to every game. For those of you mocking them now... Each and every one of them will be supporting Southampton FC and taking up a seat that isn't taken up by a Man Utd, City, Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal fan when we do hopefully get promoted back to the Premier League.

It's about time this Season Ticket/Uber fan/Super fan/Cock waving crap stopped, some Saints fans cannot attend every week, some have to work, some live far away, some can't afford to, some pick a game to hopefully see a bigger side humbled.

Who cares and what does it matter as long as we're all supporting Southampton FC?

Totally agree with you

I only watch half a dozen games a year these days but 50 years ago I watched at least 25 a year home and away.

Always phone my brother to ge scores when I am away or follow matches on the Internet all my friends and even people I hardly know realise I am a non plastic committed Saints fan who has a ticket for the Hull game

Again an absurd comparison. Top class boxers fight once every six months or so against other top class fighters, football trams in This league play 46 times a season plus cup games.

Once again you prove the point by your "going to see saints against a decent oposition" comment that people will choose to go depending on who the other team is.Why? They are meant to be saints fans.

Sigh

Any fan that waves there ST thinking there a better fan are idiots, when i had one when i was younger i never thought this.

Work and pricing are the main reason people dont go, but also i know alot of saints fans like myself who play hampshire league or wessex and were rather play then watch untill were older.

Final point the only people i hate is the ones who bring there non saints fans friends along to big matches anoys the hell out of me, il go to my 8-10 games a season one of which will be pompey, no matter how big my game is that day il be there vs the skates, never missed a home game vs pompey at st marys.

Anyone who gets ****ed off at a defeat and ecstatic with a victory is a fan. Who gives a monkey how many games they attend? They'll go when they can/when they wish to.

I just wish Saints played some games in Asia, then I'd get to see them again. Don't miss England in the slightest, but christ I miss being at St Mary's.

PROUD TO BE PLASTIC !

I've been a Saints supporter since I first started going to the Dell in 1974. I'd love a season ticket but cant afford it. My lifestyle / commitments allows me to go to half a dozen or so games a year when I can. Do I pick the better games ? Of course I do. Does that make me a plastic ? Or a JCL ? Who gives a f*ck , and if you wave your season ticket at me I'll face you up and sing ......

I dont care about you

I dont care about yooooouuuuu

I am a plastic

I dont care about you !

So, so many of you are missing the point. It's not about people who can only go so often for whatever reason, it's those fans who can go but don't for whatever reason. Like the 5,000 who wouldn't have bothered for the Charlton game but suddenly found the money/got time off work/didn't have a surprise birthday party when we found out we had Man United in the cup that day instead. I think it's a pretty fair assumption to make that the reason they went was because of who we were playing, not because they wanted to see Saints.

Not only am I a Plastic, I'm also a cheapskate Plastic having FINALLY managed to book my airmiles ticket for next weekend after a dismal fail to get back for Boro.

All I need now is a Match Day ticket.

Whadda mean it's sold out? WTF where did all those fans come from :x

Arrrgghh

My only gripe is the allocation of tickets. They have had a ballot for S/T holders to go to The Reservation in December, but for home games there is a free for all. As long as you are on the data base you can apply for tickets. There should be some distinction between non season ticket holders who go to 1 or 2 games a season and those that go to a dozen or so.

Yes, it seems a simple enough point to grasp doesn't it ? But I'm starting to think that it's obviously beyond the comprehension of some on here.

I'd like to ask the many who opine that all supporters are somehow exactly equal in their commitment to the cause of Southampton Football Club (even if they haven't bothered to attend once since 2005) whether they extend that very same principle into other walks of life. For instance, is every doctor, racing driver, police officer, or politician, all equally good, or are some rather more equal than others ?

I say this as a perfectly average (very non 'uber') fan who I must disclose hardly ever gets to go to away games (and even misses some Tuesday nighters) but some fans really are more committed than others. If that painful fact hurts your ego too much then I can only suggest you take a aspirin, because the truth does hurt on occasions I'm afraid.

There should also be a distinction for the MANY Saints fans who live overseas. We only get back for something between 2 and 5 games a season, but since 1967 have probably seen more games than some of the latest uber fans. Probably held ST's at the Dell & SMS for longer than some of those wavers have lived.

Some get plenty of prior notice and can plan well in advance, others have to blag work trips and bend their employment rules and get back at short notice. Are those guys (who were at Oldham, Sheffield and the likes Away back in the 2nd Division days) Plastics?

Most of the times I have come back I have been lucky enough to have a mate who can get me a ticket on his ST or Dbase info. That still meant a nightmare at the JPT which I (and my son between us) spent around a grand flying back just to see. He was sat on a crush barrier on the Milton to see MLT when he was 5 moved here when he was 6 but still saw 3 games last Xmas and 2 more in the season. Yet he only gets short notice of having a weekend free. Yet twice now he's had to miss games because they were sell outs and he couldn't plan in advance.

It was a close run thing for me to get back this coming weekend - tickets are really tight already but if it had been an away game - no chance.

Cannot be difficult to have a "Making a special effort Dbase"

But the point you're missing that those of us "missing the point" are endeavouring to articulate is that it doesn't matter.

If someone wants to pay good money to primarily see the team that Saints are playing and then brag to their mates the next day that 'his' Saints team won the game then what's the problem?

If that's what he wants to do let him do it.

Anyone would think this 'going to watch a football game' malarkey was serious business.

At least we can agree on one thing: my definition of the phrase "It doesn't bother me" is different to your definition... ;-)

Everyone understands that family, work and money impinges on footy and it's no different for me, despite being a season ticket holder. However, it would appear that some are irked as their support has been found wanting due to them CBA to see us in L1 but will no doubt be flooding back if and when we get back to the top flight.

Are those Saints fans who traveled the length and breadth of England whilst we were in L1 superior to the CBA wan kers? Yes.

They know it and we know it.

And there we have the root problem with this thread . . . when Saints fans start calling other Saints fans wan kers . . . sad :shakey:

Plastic or Uber, lets just fill the stadium and support our team !

I'm a London based STH.

Get to about 18 of the 23 home games per season and maybe 7 or 8 aways.

Find midweek games at SMS pretty hard to get to.

So I will select games partly based on the opposition - especially in the cups.

A 2nd round Carling Cup game v Northampton.....hmmmm....can probably give that a miss.

A cup game v Pompey or Man Utd and I'm doing all I can to make sure I get to the match.

As far as league games go, the opposition matters too. I'm making a bigger effort to get to top of the table clashes than less glamorous ties.

Does this make me plastic? Do I care?
