Hatch Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/15668207.stm Good idea I reckon, Newcastle get a whole heap of cash, sponsors get their name in the paper and on telly, the fans carry on calling it St James' Park anyway. Everyones a winner.
LGTL Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 I fully expect to see unemployed, fat wasters with their replica shirts above their head protesting on SSN any minute.
Mattio Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 We weren't exactly happy about SMS being called the Friends Provident Dome of Soccertainment though were we?
keithd Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 When we opened was our gaff not called Friends Provident St Marys Stadium? We got a lot of dosh from FP and everybody always called it St Marys anyhoo. Of course its slightly different as our was a new place and theirs has been called SJP for 100 odd years, but fear not ye Geordie wasters, it'll always be SJP
pedg Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 I think they should have tried to get stadium sponsorship from a well known brand of Irish Whiskey. Would only have needed to add a few letters then.
Mattio Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 To be fair they don't seem to mind too much on their forum, I suppose they're just happy with how they're doing in the league.
Born In The 80s Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 NO Newcastle fan has the right to whinge about the stadium name change after hearing how much they're paying for season tickets over the next decade. Unbelievably decent of Mike Ashley.
pap Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 They had a rent-a-Geordie on the Today programme this morning who accused Cashley of playing the politician trick - dumping bad news in the midst of favourable circumstances. Personally, I can't stand sponsors on anything.
sambosa75 Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 No company will pay £8-10m a year to sponsor something that with court nothing but bad publicity. It will be the same as their sportsdirect.com @ St. James' Park stunt from last year. No one will be interested, everyone will carry on calling it SJP and it will be forgotten about. Saint Mikey Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 Exeter City really does have the real St James' Park now then? (TM Socceram, when it was good..)
gaz Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 Watch the Spurs fans loot the Sports Direct Arena when they visit.
bpsaint Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 I'm probably mistaken on this, but I was under the assumption that Mike Ashley owned both Newcastle United and Sports Direct, so is the extra £8-10million per year not just going to be Ashleys money anyway? pedg Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 (edited) Olympic committee did not get the memo. From an email today... In the summer of 2012, the greatest show on earth is coming to a city near you! The City of Coventry Stadium, Hampden Park, the Millennium Stadium, Old Trafford, St James' Park and Wembley Stadium have been chosen as the venues for the Olympic Football Tournament. Actually with the Olympics people being hot on brands not sponsoring the Olympics I wonder if Ashley could be in trouble over the renaming on that front. OVER THE HILL Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 The Newcastle fan with his face painted black and white stripes on BBC news was hilarious, I couldn't understand a word he said.
pedg Posted 10 November, 2011 Share Posted 10 November, 2011 Wonder if its all a publicity stunt? Change his mind in a day or so due to 'popular feeling' having got lots of free publicity.
