When do we start to believe ...?

Didn't think we would be points clear at this stage - thought we would be in the top few.

I couldn't see us being below Leicester and West Ham - although some were in awe of the big name managers and signings, none of Leicester's signings scared me as signing players how would get in our team.

People moan about outsiders not recognising how far we have come - but think there were quite a few on here like that.

Great times and can't see us being out of top 6 all season - reckon most likely finish is......1st.

Early days and bad little run or amazing run by others can soon change that.

Personally, I won't believe until the final whistle of the final game of the season. Too many times have clubs gone steaming ahead in the Championship (Cardiff, anyone?) to mess it up. Having been a Saints fan all my life, you have a natural pessimism when it comes to football!

Having said that, Adkins has instilled incredible character about the team - we're the only team in the championship to have not dropped a point after taking the lead. We're top on merit, we've not lost to any of the "big boys" leading the promotion chase, and we've got a great manager and great team.

A couple of astute signings in the January window could go a long way to determining how we do the latter half of the season....

If we take averages over the last 16 seasons 82 points would be enough to get a team promoted. There is the odd blip when 90 points or 87 points have been only good enough for 3rd place. We need 46 points to get to 82 from 30 games. That is only a shade over 1.5 points per game, currently what we are getting away from home. I think we will probably need 84 or 85 points but from this position we have a great chance. So yes I believe!!

after 16 games we have 36 points.

last year, QPR were top with 34 points. Finished top, 8 points clear of 3rd.

year before Newcastle were top with 33 points. Finished top, 23 points clear of 3rd

year before Wolves were top with 37 points. Finished top, 10 points clear of 3rd.

year before Watford were top with 36 points. Finished 6th.

year before Cardiff were top with 33 points. Finished 13th.

In last 5 years only once has a team had a better start than us - wolves, by one point and they walked it.

Watford and Cardiff show this is still too early to take it for granted but odds are we will go up.

Cardiff lost their top place after 20 games, Watford at Christmas.(held iy up to 23 games).

I think (but not checked this bit sorry) team top at Christmas has gone up for quite a while.

We are actually going to get promoted/or win as champions?!

whoa ..careful Sperm John,

when I asked a similar question a while ago.. if fans were afraid of success, there were loads of no-believers out there, I hope things have changed since.

personally..I was already of that opinion in April, and haven't wavered a bit since then.

I absolutely had no worries about this season..and from the start I said I would be incredibly disappointed if we didn't make the playoffs at least and give the top 2 a good push and that still stands. Honestly couldn't understand the numerous threads about us being mid table, avoiding relegation etc.

This is the best post on the subject. We can afford to be optimistic, but cannot afford to be complacent. There is an awful long way to go. Our failure to strengthen in key positions last summer could cost us dear.

Presumably you are referring to this thread:

http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?33055-Are-we-afraid-of-success...&highlight=afraid+success+failure

Being that the thread you started wasn't actually about whether we would (or could) go up or not this season, not sure where on earth you have drawn the conclusion that you encountered lots of "non believers". No-one on that thread could be called a non believer in the possibility we could get promoted this season. Not one person.

But to be honest I don't think anyone had a clue what that thread was about, least of all you.

The only non believers on that thread are the ones challenging your misguided belief that Few can doubt that if we are still at the top came January that the Liebherr family wouldn't give the nod to an extra 40-50 million out of their coffee money to give us the edge in the transfer market and seal promotion in obedience to Marcus Liebherr's dying wish to see " his club " get to the top flight

Which you soon downgraded to 20-30 million spent in the next transfer window.

So if you want to call me a non believer that we will spend between 20 and 30 million in January, then I'm a non believer.

Don't think we should believe, apparently we were 'gifted' 2 goals again yesterday (as quoted by their manager) - he didn't mention the other 2 we scored so perhaps we were only worth a draw.

Speaking to a Leicester supporter last evening who is of the opinion that were are still riding last years' "bubble" and it wont last. He also reckons that now SGE has gone they WILL definitely go up this year.

So, like that famous story line in Dallas, we must be all in a dream at the moment and when the wheels fall off our bus WHU, Leicester and Brighton will all step out of the shower and get the promotion they have the divine right to.

Ring him up console him on losing at home to Leeds today.

The biggest problem so far has been leaking too many goals, which looked sorted for a while, but crept back in this week.

Looking back, over the whole season, the two promoted teams for the last 5 years conceded 32, 58, 35,48,52,37,55,55,47 and 42.

At this rate we will concede around 50, which as long as we continue our decent scoring rate, shouldn't be a problem.

only one thing really matters though, keep up 2 points a game and all will be well...........

I might have guessed that I'd see a contribution from you CB. With regard to my original statement about our future success, it was something I noted from a number of others on this site who refuse to accept the possibility that we might go up to a short-lived life of mediocrity in the Premiership and those who would prefer to stay " safe " in the top half of CCC instead.

(The difference between those who wanted " success", and those who were " afraid " of failure.)

I have noted your well-constructed contributions to various threads, perhaps I should try to curb my enthusiasm (and choice of words) in future, but part of me still retains the same fervour I had when I watched my first Saints game at the Dell...52 years ago !

I also do not believe (contrary to a number of others here ) that the Liebherrs are only in this for a " quick killing " and intend to sell out as soon as the club goes into the black. If we are to believe Nicola Cortese's statements about enlarging SMS, and presumably " buying better quality players " in order to sustain life in the Prem. ..and attain Euro football (his words) then money will have to be spent..although obviously not in three months time-frame ..as I rashly suggested in my first thread, but I think that such conversations must have taken place and planning is in progress - pending promotion.

I can only refer back to the title of THIS thread ... When do we start to believe.?. - I have never doubted...but only time will tell.

I will only believe when it's mathematically confirmed.

This. Been supporting Saints for too long to think otherwise......BUT....for the first time I can remember, I feel genuinely confident about the team, and that we'll pull off promotion this season.

Ok, thats those chickens counted, I'm off to bed.

Long long way to go - lot's of twists and turns to come yet. Somebody will come strong in the second half, form and injuries will play a part. Quietly optimistic - but will believe on the last game of the season when we are still 4 points clear.

May 2012

x 1, Having supported the Saints for 40 years, I'll believe it when it has actually happened !

I'm loving it just now but still get nervy when we concede (even v Posh when we were all over them!).

I know it's irrational but that's the way it is !!!!
