Huffton Posted 6 November, 2011 Posted 6 November, 2011 If the big clubs like Arsenal, Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea come calling for our top young stars then we're not going to be any more successful in holding on to them as we have done in the past. I disagree. IF we get back there next season, or the next, we are no longer a 'selling club'. We can compete in the wages dept, which, lets face it, is pretty much the only thing the top players are interested in.
The Kraken Posted 6 November, 2011 Posted 6 November, 2011 I disagree. IF we get back there next season, or the next, we are no longer a 'selling club'. We can compete in the wages dept, which, lets face it, is pretty much the only thing the top players are interested in. Cortese says we will live within our means, rater than be financially bankrolled. Which means that no, we cannot compete in the wages department; certainly not with the top 4 or 5 clubs, not even close. We will always be a selling club; there's no great shame to it. Even Manchester United lost Cristiano Ronaldo when a bigger and more attractive club came knocking. Liverpool lost Torres for the same reason. Competing with that while still living within our means is just impossible.
The Kraken Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 We may or we may not, but why would it not being different to last time be bad? Last time we stayed up nearly 3 decades and had countless memories of beating the big clubs. How is winning more regularly against teams we're expected to beat better? I'm not saying it would at all; I've never suggested that. But claiming that we'd hold on to our top players should top 4 clubs come sniffing around is just a bit naive IMO.
SNSUN Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 The pros outweigh the cons about being in the Premiership - seeing people's answers, it seems that being in the Premiership would be more good for the club and city, and less good for the fan. In the Championship, it's the opposite. I love the Championship, but I don't wish to be selfish - being in the Premiership makes the most sense. We DO have one of the best youth teams in the country, and with the new rules coming in, being in the Premiership would protect our youngsters from being pilfered by "big clubs". (Though granted, opportunities for the youngsters to play would be diminished.) Financially it makes the most sense too. It's a moot point at the moment anyway, we're only a third of the way through the season. Enjoy the country's best league while we're still in it.
offix Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 To be honest, I am in two minds about this. One the one hand I want my team to be competing at the highest possible level, but on the other hand I am afraid that it may be too soon, and that we would be struggling. Maybe we need another season for Adkins to strengthen the team to a level where we have a reasonable chance of success in the Prem. Or do you think that this squad could survive there?

Maybe we need another season for Adkins to strengthen the team to a level where we have a reasonable chance of success in the Prem. Or do you think that this squad could survive there? Having watched a bit of EPL football this season I'd suggest that a lot of the players on show in the matches that I've seen are no better than ours. It's about tactics, competitivity and organisation in many cases. I'm not going to pretend that we could compete with Man C or Man or even Tottenham but I doubt that we're any worse than Swansea or QPR let alone Wigan or Blackburn. We have good players and if you look at blokes like Derry at QPR or Delap at Stoke you wonder what all the fuss is about. We'd have to strengthen our defence though.Don't think even Fonte would be good enough because his constant fouling wouldn't go unpunished by the powder puff refs in that division.
Dig Dig Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 I think that we shouldn't base our prem expectations on our previous time there. The premiership has evolved and there is decent competition outside of the top 6 say. It was always more structured when we were there and we mostly found ourselves competing with the bottom 6 sides. Nowdays, a team can get europe one season and then be in a relegation battle the next. I think this time around, our current squad with a few additions can compete for a mid table slot. Anything more than that will require the type of investment in our team which is unprecedented for us.
JRM Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 Wolves fans are paying £50 for Chelsea away coming up, Arsenal fans were paying £65 at stamford bridge a couple of weeks ago, ticket proces like that unfortunately put a downer on what should be a really positive thing being promoted
warsash saint Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 Better stadia Better citys to visit not exactly "one good thing" Blackburn, Wolves, WBA, Sunderland, Wigan, Villa, Stoke .... hmmmm ?
JRM Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 and why the f*ck do people refer to it as the EPL?
dune Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 and why the f*ck do people refer to it as the EPL? Differentiates it from the SPL?
JRM Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 Differentiates it from the SPL? i'm fairly sure if you just said premier league no one will confuse it with us getting back to the scottish top division, it has sneaked into terminology since the cricket league in India started
THEVMAN Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 Seeing Kelvin,Morgan and Adams faces and thinking where did it all go wrong lol

Otherwise it's definitely a positive in my eyes.
dune Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 i'm fairly sure if you just said premier league no one will confuse it with us getting back to the scottish top division, it has sneaked into terminology since the cricket league in India started EPL sounds better than PL. Although I've always called it the Premier League even when it changed to the Premiership.
scotty Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 It seems to me as though everyone is expecting us to settle for a lower table scrap in the Prem. Times have changed lads, I can't see Cortese adopting this mindset! This. Plus, I cant see NC or NA hanging around long if we dont get promotion this season or next, so imho there really isnt a downside to promotion because if it doesnt happen we arent going to just cruise along in the NPC. I'm enjoying this season though....
adrian lord Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 and why the f*ck do people refer to it as the EPL? Rhymes with EDL?
doddisalegend Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 The football club needs the PL - not getting there has to many negative impacts. You're either in the finacial elite or you're struggling - for that reason we have to get to the PL. As a football fan - I don't need the PL and all it's over hyped bollix and would be quite happy if saints never went back there. I have had in general a lot more fun supporting saints in league 1 and the champ than I remember in the PL. Probably best just to enjoy the moment while it lasts.
Saint_Randell Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 Don't forget being able to pick Saints players in your fantasy teams again

Charlie Wayman Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 There is a tide in the lives of men which, if taken at its flood, leads to fortune. This is the sort of snooty ******** talk that football just doesn't need. It's a bare arms and spades business not an effing literary convention!
Charlie Wayman Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 Don't be surprised to see us establish ourselves in the top flight and be on a par with Spurs, Villa & Everton, rather than struggling against relegation Nicole Cortese is an ambitious bugger and won't be settling for anything less. Expect to see young foreign players from Italian Serie A clubs and France in January. If you're looking at the likes of Billy Sharp you'll be looking in the wrong direction. If the British guys from lower leagues were good enough they'd be with the top 8 clubs by now so ergo they won't be good enough for Saints.

Wish there was some sort of system in place that the hardcore away support and season ticket holders/regular home attendees during the last few years could be rewarded for the years of touring the football league grounds by getting tickets to these games.

sidthesquid Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 Saturday 3 o'clock kick offs. Would miss them. That is the worst thing about the Prem - never being able to plan anything more than a fortnight ahead to keep the armchair fans amused. It got so bad I nearly gave up my season ticket of thirty-something years, because every time I planned anything they'd switch times or days to feck me up. (Luckily we got relegated & it stopped being a problem!) But happy though we are, sadly we have to push on, because like most things in life it is either forwards or backwards and staying still is not an option. But I reckon we now have what it takes to cope, assuming we are not all getting a little ahead of ourselves here.......

Unless you're in the Europa League or one of the top 4, then a significant majority of games would still be Saturday 3pm. Also very rare for them to be moved at a couple of weeks notice, usually a couple of months at least.

I've not missed a league game home or away for a few years, but there is no-way I'd pay £50 to go to Stamford Bridge, can't believe people pay that week in week out.

Turkish Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 Not being in the same league as Brighton any more Seeing the worlds best players at SMS Being in the best league in the world People not wanting to go are are the same people who stay in dead end jobs because 'it's comfortable and i dont have to stretch myself' Hmm, the best league in the world as marketed by Sky Sports. I'd suggest the German and Spanish leagues are at least as good. Anyway, I get pleasure from seeing Saints win and play good football, not watching supposedly elite players run rings round us while their arrogant fans take the p*ss in the stands, or worse still sit in silence as they expect to beat us. Also having to put up with plastic Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea etc "fans" at work whose support consists of having a sky sports subsription and owning a replica shirt taking the p*ss when they beat us. I also dont want to pay 50 quid a game to see us battling relegation every season going back to the survival is success mantra that was trotted out during the 90's. I cringe at fans celebrating staying up on the last day of the season like they've won the champions league, that isn't success, that is narrowly avoiding faliure and it sure as hell aint worth £800 over the course of a season. If we were in that situation i'd seriously have to question if top flight football is for me, even at "only" £40 a game. Forget talk of being a champions league club, that is deluded, unrealistic thinking. However, if we had a real go at regularly finishing in the top 6-10 every season whilst playing attractive football, even if we didn't always achieve it, then i would welcome top flight football and would be prepared to pay the going rate.

DanW Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 There are 6 to 8 Premiership games on TV in the States on a given weekend. There are 1 to 2 Championship games on TV in the States on a given weekend. Maybe it's selfish, but I definitely want SFC to go up for that reason alone...and the other great reasons are just icing on the cake.
The Kraken Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 The best reason I can see so far is so that the majority of our fans can work out that it's called the Premier League, and not the Premiership.
Turkish Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 The best reason I can see so far is so that the majority of our fans can work out that it's called the Premier League, and not the Premiership. I call it top flight football. They refuse to accept football existed before 1991, i refuse to call it by the name they have given it.
doddisalegend Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 One plus point I suppose is saints players will start appearing on Match attax cards Richard Lambert attack 45 defence 26 woohooo my 9 year old will be excited
DaveyR Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 Football = business. Hence business wants to be where the money is. This equals the shameless money grabbing ****s of the premier league and Sky TV

Dr Who? Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 You have to aim high, and think maybe this time we can strengthen our team, get bigger crowds, be higher up the league and challenge for a Champions League spot. I think the last couple of times we have been in a position to push the boat out and go to the next level, we have not taken it with both hands. This time with no debt and extending our ground we could be a top 5 team IMO. We just think about the past, the restricted crowds and a chairman who was as tight as you like. This time maybe this time it could be diffferent, and being a Football (Saints) fan this is what it is all about surely, competing at the top against the best......bring it on!!!
SaintRobbie Posted 7 November, 2011 Posted 7 November, 2011 What a mad thread! lol Premier League s only a bit naff if we're crap in it. But the Club's ambition is to not settle for Premiership mediocrity but to push on and 'become the Barcelona of the South' as I recall. Bring on the prawn sandwiches if that's the case!!! COYRs!!!

What I mean is we do not have debt at the moment. Of course we will if we expand, but then you need to improve as a team, fill the ground and get more revenue. Hope that this turns into more success, and then it snowballs. This is an ideal of course. What does not work is when you get to the 4th in the Premier League at Christmas, and then not do all you can to push on to the next level and go through a number of 4th rate managers, get relegated, and go into administration. Ok easy on paper, but it is the way to do it!! You have to dream.... COYRS!!

Oh come on Turkish with our catchement area 45,000 is never going to be enough. There will be 30k of fans who will come flooding back once we're in the PL happy to pay £60+ a ticket to boot.
