Would YOU sign anyone in January?

Hypothetically, if you were Nigel Adkins, would you sign anyone in the January transfer window?

Granted we have just under a couple of months for form/injuries to take their toll, but do you think we have any gaps in the squad, or should we wait until the summer before signing anyone? I ask because I (and I'm not the only one) thought until recently that we were in need of a striker. Now, I think a new signing has the potential to cause unrest for what is a very settled team, and our form certainly indicates we aren't in need of anyone.

For me, I feel a permanent addition isn't needed until the summer (at least...), but we could boost numbers with a loan. What do you think?

I see this as a big dilema in the January window, as it currently stands we are 5 points ahead of second so our squad can't be too bad, so would additions to the squad increase our ability to get better results or disrupt our togetherness and team ethic coupled with new players needing time to settle in. Any good player we sign (better than we have at the moment) should be good enough for the Premier League and would expect to play from the start of matches in the Championship, so who would we drop ?.

On balance the only signings that I would make would be to sign Hooiveld permanently, and a striker to partner Lambert (although the way the Gully has played recently I would also hesitate to change that).

Get Jos on the bus, and another quality CB. If we lost Jos or Jose now we'd struggle big time.

Not sure on a striker. Obviously if we lost Lambert we'd be in trouble, but if anyone else gets injured we've got cover. Guly, Connolly, SDR, and Barney (hopefully have him fit soon) can all do a job up top with Lambert. Could even throw Lallana in there playing in the hole behind Rickie.

We need a new centre forward!!! This has been proven. If anything happened to Rickie we only have Guly, Connolly, Lallana, Chaplow, Hooveld and De Ridder scoring regularly. And only Barnard to come in from the bench.

Not without a fairly big centre forward they aren't. Take Ricky out this team and we've really got an issue. Guly and DC can't hold the ball up to save their lives. Guly's first touch is poor and DC is a midget. Lamberts hold up play and target size are far more important to our success than his goals.

Guly's first touch is poor? You make it sound like we're lumping it up to Rickie? His part in the goals against Peteborough was to take a free kick that, in truth, anyone could have taken.

I don't dispute he is a brilliant player who we would miss. Can you name any other player of his quality we could bring in who would be happy to sit on the bench?

I knew this thread would be started tonight....

No Lallana and no Lambert and we are f**ked. Hooiveld isnt ours.

I cannot believe this is even a serious question. If someone is available, is better than what we have or is quality cover, and is interested, we should sign him.

If someone is available and will sit on our bench, they aren't good enough.

Hooivet, and maybe looking at being in players to settle in and introduce to the squad/team slowly like with DeRidder who I really like but must be capable of prem.

I would also say I think Guly is equally as good as Lambert up front, and maybe our best striker right now. DC will be too old next season and we are yet to see Barney so I would agree with a striker, De Ridder is a winger and a good one at that.

De Ridder was available and fits on our bench. He is good enough.

He is good enough for an impact player. He's not good enough to start. So what should we do, play with ten until 65 minutes...???

The point I'm making is that there are very few if any players as good as those we have who would come in as 'cover'.

If we're going to buy anyone we should buy BETTER than we have.

Otherwise we have a squad already.

It has taken Guly almost 1.5 seasons to become automatic first choice.

We need another CF in the Rickie mould, but younger and with a touch more pace, BUT with strong technique.

That says find another gem in Europe in January, the bench time (like SDR) will help them bed in to English football, while still acting as cover. Someone who can be better than Rickie when we go up.

CB - well that depends on Seabourne's recovery in honesty. We will attract better players when we are promoted, hopefully Dan (or even Jaidi) will still be able to act as cover. IF they cannot then yes, sign Jos & get another loan in as cover

I went to the games against Swindon and Palace. In both of them we were pretty inept up front and the ball just didn't stick. Luckily we are seldom without Lambert when it matters. The only other instances I can remember are Plymouth at home last year (beat us 1-0 on the way to relegation) and Gillingham away 2 seasons ago (beat us 2-1 on the way to relegation). Not good.

I was also at Palace. We were inept up front but still had chances to win the game and missed them. Thankfully we have four strikers ahead of Forte and we score from midfield regularly.

Swindon I couldn't comment on.

Also think we may need a new keeper esp if we did go up, love kelvin but he does scare me at time's! also like bart but just don't know.

Signing Jos permanently is a given, but also think we could do with another CB on top of that. I'm not sure Martin is a long term option, and it seems unlikely that Jaidi or Seaborne will be back this season.

May also be tempted to bring in a CM, as Chaplow seems to have excelled as a winger recently so a young CM like Butterfield might be useful.

I think a quick striker to play off Rickie is a must really, again a younger player who won't mind starting off as an impact player, but also someone who'll make the step up if we get promoted. Sordell would be my choice.

I am just pleased it is not my problem. But as NA has alluded to, any player has to buy into the team ethic and personality wise they must fit as well.Jos is a fine example of this and I hope he signs a pemanent deal as soon as the window reopens.

We do need cover for Ricky but that is a problem ,possibly the only solution is a young player willing to sit on the bench and wait for his chance,.

Get Jos the Boss on board permanently, and if Danny Seaborne isn't going to be back this season then another CB on loan for the rest of the season. We also need a striker that can come in if Rickie (god forbid) gets injured. Preferably somebody who's good in the air, strong and can hold the ball up and is pacy. You don't get many of them in the pound, but if we can find someone like that who we can get in we definitely need to go for it.

How do you suggest dealing with Lambert and Lallana being out? I don't see how we could sign 2 players of that quality at all, let alone sign them as back up. Like all clubs, you just have to hope for a bit of luck with injuries, and hope reserves step up when needed.

Sadly I doubt this will stop the 'we should have signed back up for them' cries when they do miss games. Sometimes you just have to accept the drawback of having some really top drawer players is that you may have a weakened team when they're out. Take the best two players out of any team and they're severely weakened, even Barcelona or Real Madrid. With Arsenal just take out RVP and they're fcked. Least at our level without Lallana and Lambert we'd still have Guly, De Ridder, Chaplow, Holmes, Connolly to make an impact.

Right, let's not even bother trying then....

i think this window is going to be very interesting. I hope we sign jos permanantly but also another cb as we only have martin as back up and he has not proved yet that he is ready to play every week. Also jose seems to have dipped slightly and so adding real competition is needed. It is vital in my mind that we need a striker. Either someone like sharp or maynard but my choice would be sordell. It would also be great if we went for nathaniel clyne. Butters wont be good enough for the prem even assuming we do go up this year. Whoeveq we do sign im sure na will carry out due dilligence on their character to ensure minimum disruption to the squad.

Agree we need a centre forward who can do what Lambert does- while we have luxury of bringing off Guly, Lallana etc, we have no no ready replacement for Lambert and are forced to play him into the ground. Still there is no reason why Barney can't provide decent cover: he's strong, has good close control and has decent awareness. The run-up to the transfer window, coinciding with his return to fitness, will be a big test for Barney to prove himself .

Pace up top would truly give us a different dimension, esp away from home where teams will push up; but if forced to choose between pace and a strong, physical link-up player (I just cant see us bringing two strikers without moves the other way), I would probably still go with the latter as it builds on our way of playing. Hopefully, Barney as a credible replacement for Lambert means we're not forced to choose and can still bring in some pace. Alternatively, we can have our fill by signing a winger-cum-striker which should be possible if we can dump Punch.

Otherwise, make Jos permanent, perhaps bring in another CB in light of Radhi's prognosis, though I am quite happy with a combo of Martin and Cork as back-up and keep an eye out for young additions a la Clyne that will genuinely set us up for the future. I would be prepared to spend big on young talent.

That's not the point - we might not be able to replace Lambert or Lallana directly but they ultimately fit into a system and their roles should have decent cover. Take Lambert: we need somebody who can hold the ball up and bring others into play. West Ham know that if Cole gets injured, they can bring in Carew and vice-versa.

Depending on the previous game my opinion on this changes!! I still think we need a CB, CM and CF of quality to challenge for a place in the starting line up. After Cardiff I was convinced we needed this but after Middlesboro I thought we were good for players!! I think Nigel is rotating the midfield perfectly at the moment and I will stand corrected after saying I didn't rate Morgan after Tuesday night!! If we buy it needs to be starting players as opposed to squad players (how much **** did we buy on the way down through this league!!!)

I don't think we should rest on our laurels. What we're doing at the moment and where we are in the league is absolutely stunning and beyond anyone's expectations.

So let's not let this enormous opportunity slip away. January is a perfect opportunity to grab a reinforcement in a couple of positions. Who knows what could happen in the 2nd half of the season?

A top 6 finish would still be fantastic....but why not grab this opportunity with both hands to win this league? We may never be in such a strong position again - I think we've got a great chance with an extra striker and CB added to the squad.

Why on earth do you think we need another CM? We have 4 top quality championship CM's, that's one area we don't need to touch.

CB and CF agreed.

Clearly we have to sign a CB, even if just to get Jos as permanent. Depending on the Seaborne situation I would sign another CB as well, we needed another CB before we lost Seaborne, Jos really is only replacement for him.

We also need a striker, self evident from all of the activity in the summer, even if it came to nought. We have got away with it so far, but to imagine going through to May without anyone new would be madness. Personally I would like to see a young, up and coming striker, not necessarily one that we have been linked with so far.

I think we are also light in midfield, especially on the flanks.

If we are still up there and challenging we should be thinking about the future and starting to build for life in the PL.

Think Chaplow is best out wide and is owning the RM position!! I think when we go up we need to improve the quality of midfield and not convinced that Hammond/Morgan are good enough for the Prem (although I am willing to be proved wrong and will hold my hands up if i am wrong) In January we need to build for the year not the rest of this season!

I have had a bet with a skate at work that Lallana and Lambert are good enough for the Prem, he thinks they aren't but can't explain why!?!?

You would genuinely sign a striker to sit on the bench? Someone better than Barnard? What would be the point unless we were to have a disaster that took out Guly, Lambert and De Ridder??

What do you think we have got away with??

Doesn't our style of play mean we simply aren't reliant on a striker like we were under Pardew? Our goals are crafted in the much the same way as Arsenal's - they seem to come from midfield most of the time, even if Lambert scores them.

Barnard cannot get a sniff of first team action and Connolly is fit and well. I just can't see what another striker would do other than mow the grass at Stapleford.

You really think after all our progress we should go back to the days of signing back up? If we're signing a striker, it should be a different option or an improvement on what we have.

Not just for back-up, but for squad rotation. We don't have a big physical presence up front aside from Rickie (and Guly at a real push - he gets muscled off the ball easily) and to have a different option to come in for certain games is a good thing. Reading did well to sign Mathieu Manset from Hereford, if they hadn't signed him, he is a good player for holding up the ball and winning aerial challenges. If we were looking for a big striker with a bit of pace about him, I would suggest Daniel Powell from MK Dons.

People hunger after huge names, but I think signing a Maynard or a Sharp could unsettle the balance we have at the moment up front. Our strikers are playing well, playing confidently and scoring goals - that's what we need from them. Don't forget we have Lee Barnard to come back into the side as well as Connolly who's on the fringes of the Starting XI. We have good options up front, and we just need something a bit different up top, but somebody who can deputise for Rickie if he was injured, which would mean we wouldn't need to change a whole lot tactically.
