Lukas Jutkiewicz.... is he worth signing?

After what we've been through, I'm not sure I'd laugh at their fans and the position they are in, it was horrible. Being resigned to losing one of your best players just to survive, during a season you've written off before December can't be fun. But that said, it's a cut-throat game so if we can walk out with LJ I wont feel too bad.

That thread is a good read. I do feel sorry for the Cov fans. Spent a bit of time on-site in Coventry. They're generally a good bunch, and don't deserve the crap they're going through.

Fair play to them for their gallows humour though. That makes me chuckle, even if their situation doesn't.

that could easily have been us.. remember SISU were more than interested to invest in us a few years back

BTW Coventry are 1-0 down to Cardiff City at the moment, and Juke is playing but he has missed a couple.

A connection to Southampton shouldn't be a factor in the decision and Maynard is available, in January. Despite Connolly's injury surely we can cope for a few more weeks and go for the better player.

Didn't City recently say they would rather keep him for the season, stay up and lose him for free at the end, then let him go in Jan? Have they since said he can leave in Jan?

Personally don't see this as a goer at all. LJ would be a decent squad player and probably would improve as well but that kind of money for what effectively would be RL backup is a bit mental. 1M then maybe it's not bad but still really only a stopgap measure and still a squad signing. NA talked all summer long about only bringing in players that would improve the first team and, on the face of it, this signing wouldn't do that.

Seems like this is more of an attractive deal for Cov and/or the players agent TBH.

Regardless of what some people think about him, his 7 league goals this season put him in the top 10 scorers... in a team that's 23rd in the league.

Thats more than Guly 6, and Lallana and Connolly have got 5 each..it's also almost half of Coventry's total ..the rest of the side have only managed 8 between them.

It's also better than the other £4 million candidates being bantered about, so far this season Maynard has 6 league goals, JayRod and Sharp only 4 each.

Stats can be confusing though - you talk about 4M candidates but no one is willing to pay that for the ones you've mentioned (or certainly not us anyway). Sharp has a 3.25M exit clause and Maynard is out of contract in the summer so neither will go for much more than 3M which is what we're talking about with LJ (although that's probably paper talk).

Maynard also plays for a team that is 22nd so the ratio is fairly similar but he does have a better goals to games ratio in previous seasons than LJ.

it was an astonishing admittance live on radio.. he admitted 'losing his best striker'

asked if that was Juks last game for Coventry he replied...

" I am very disappointed, just as we were getting things together we have to start over again"

" It's not my decision I have to get on with it"

Cheers for the write-up mate. Missed that you'd added all that.

I would be rather underwhelmed if we sign him, he will not improve our frontline and has proven he can't cut it in the prem.

We should be IMO looking at Maynard or perhaps wait until we are potentially promoted to sign someone of a better pedigree.

I couldn't give a toss whether he has a saints crest tattoo'd on his bellend TBH he first and foremost needs to improve the team.

Edit - That said a loan with option to buy isn't a bad bit of business just incase he is better than I am suggesting he is, would allow us to have a proper look at him.

Bit early to judge him at this stage. He's not even here yet.

Coventry fans have just started a thread regarding the comments Andy Thorn made that patred44 mentioned above.

Nearly everyone was underwhelmed by Jos, but he's turning into one of our most important players.

Nigel and our coaches know more about Lukas than any of us, they'd have studied him for weeks. They'll know his strengths and weaknesses, if they feel he'll ad something to us and improve the group then he will.

Absolutely. Did the same with Dale Stephens last year, didn't we; he did a reasonable job for us but we reasoned ultimately not good enough a player to do a job for us in the Championship. Those comments from Thorn certainly indicate he's off but is it 2 us or whoever bids highest?

Totally agree, and we will all know soon enough when that window slams shut on Thursday evening.

At least if its between us and another club and the player has to decide we should be in with a decent shout this time :-)

Interesting stats/analysis by David, although LJ's record of 7goals 18 games for a struggling side is impessive, I'm not sure a direct comparison can be made:

Guly - has spent much of the season wide mf not out and out striker

Lallana - ditto

Connolly - yes, I accept he is only good in short bursts

Maynard - similar to LJ but proven over longer (although not necessarily thr back up for Rickie)

Rodriguez - nothing to add, but long term possibly a better prospect ?

Sharp - 4 goals but missed a few weeks due to injury.

Think we might do better inthe Jan window, but will wait and see what Adkins brings in,and trust his judgement.

That thread does have a feeling of deja vu to it.

Thank Christ, the unholy trinity told SISU and Ken Dullard to 'foxtrot oscar' a few years ago.

Massively overpriced at £3m.

May be Coventry's top goalscorer but I think there/four have come from the spot.

It may not be £3m though.

And even if it is, it's probably 3m over years, if he achieves certain things with us - such as so many goals, so many apps, promotion etc. It will not be £3m guaretneed, I'm 99.9999% certain of that. Probably around £1m initial fee to snap him up.

Jos had a better previous pedigree than young LJ.

I can't see what he adds to Lambert,Guly,Connolly,Barnard,Steeeeeeeve

He probably adds very little, IF they all remain fit, injury free, and for whatever other reason available to us for selection. Although Steeeeeeeve has not played as a main striker for us yet.

If they all remain fit ?? How many strikers do you want ??

Two to start the match, one on the bench. As Guly and Steeeeeve may also be required for wide MF roles, I don't think we have the surplus some imagine. An injury to RL leaves us a bit exposed.

Whether we make a signing now or in Jan is a different debate.

If he does sign, he does so as a backup which is a sign of confidence for our current strikers and also gives us some further depth. The fee, if ever disclosed, will be interesting to learn.

What I am concerned about is the approach to transfers that said we wanted players who could step up to the Premier League but had the mentality to be productive in the Championship. I'm not sure Jutkiewicz has Premier League quality in that respect.

In that vein Jonno Forte hasn't exactly shown championship quality, but my god that one real impact he made was priceless.

If Adkins wants him that's good enough for me!

Fair point, I just wonder where he fits in long-term. £3m is a lot to commit!

That said, lets worry about Jutkiewicz and the Premier League if we do sign him and if we do get there

Does anyone know how good he actually is? How do the Coventry fans rate him?

I said it about Jos, but £3m for a striker who doesn't exactly have a great record would be a little underwhelming. I was hoping we good lure in a quality(championship) striker now that we're in such a good position.

Anyway if he does sign, I hope he proves me and all the other doubters wrong.

I don't think there is anything wrong with questioning whether he can make the step up. I hope he can challenge for a starting spot.
