Guly, or not Guly.....

So glad he played in his rightful position today, sounds like he really did his stuff. What a player!

I think he could be even better when complimented with pace, but we don't have that type of player. More than happy with what we have got but have always felt Guly is one of the few players we have who can do the job in the Premier. His work rate and tackling are good and by playing him up front we have removed the negative from his midfield duties and turned them into a positive.

The headline is a joke isn't it?

Guly and Schneiderlin have always oozed talent, it's just that many people on here used to think people like me were loonies to keep saying that Guly and Morgan would be our future big stars and the two players most likely to be targetted by the bigger clubs. Now it seems everyone is coming around to the same opinion

I truly don't believe that anything you've said in the past about Saints would lead other fans to think you're a loonie......

Certainly not the bit where you promised that, upon Nigel Adkins' appointment, you would stop supporting the side as it was the biggest mistake ever. And also that you promised you would stop frequenting this board. How did that work out?

Your "wind-ups" are so sh*t, I do wonder why you actually put the effort in. Is that really the best you can do?

He's stepped up the last few games.

If he brings it to the table every other game then that's fine...and what is expected. It's when he gets in a complete rut for 5 or 6 games he is a compelte liability. Hopefully he can continue this form of setting up goals and chipping in occasionally....and working his b0ll0cks off.

The reason that he has done this is because he is being played in his proper position. I have always been a great admirer of his from the start. Anyone with half a brain could see that the guy was full of ability and class. Too many people want players to run around like idiots for 90 mins, regardless of whether they actually achieve anything or not. Guly is capable of playing in the Prem and last year was playing in Div 1. He really doesn`t deserve the flack that he has taken on here.

Headline in the Telegraph:

"Guly's genius finally breaks Coventry resolve".

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/football-league/gulys-genius-finally-breaks-coventry-resolve-6257933.html?

The OP shouldn't be necessary but sadly it is. Perhaps the penny will drop eventually for those I encountered, in the unaccustomed position for me, towards the rear of Block 33 at the Middlesborough match but somehow I doubt it will.

Why is it not possible that Guly plays some great games and some rubbish ones? People aren't idiots just because they think he has played badly at times this year. He was brilliant last night but that doesn't make him immune to criticism.

Only a fool would think that people are idiots just because they think Guly has played badly at times this year. No, what I hear toooften at St Mary's is people who only criticise and don't give credit when it's due.

Am a big fan of his - and he works very hard; but his touch sometimes is sloppy. Its infuriating and amusing in equal measures. Its as if the easier the pass or the more time he has, the more error-prone he is. Almost better when he's playing instinctively or taking on the harder option.

No apology for rewriting history then? In a thread entitled 'Anyone else think Guly is crap' you wrote :- 'He is one effing useless apology for a second rate journeyman in my opinion.' A few people got it right, Clifford Nelson, Chez amongst others, you and most of the posters didn't have a clue and were totally wrong, now you come on here and make out you thought 'he oozed talent' what hypocritical nonsense.

A few folk, and I'm happy to be one of them, always wanted him played in the continental number 10 position and now he is it's paying dividends big time.

However, it would be wrong to suggest that at Derby and Leicester, whilst playing wide, he didn't play us into trouble far too often.

As I said on another thread, he's one of those players who really can drive you nuts!

I find that my main criticism of him is his sometimes when not under pressure casual pass to the opposition that drops us in it. Some of his assist passes are sublime, he gets into good positions and is in the main an excellent finisher.

I don`t think that anyone is suggesting that he is free from criticism. The problem is that he has been criticised far too much by certain posters on here when he hasn`t deserved it. Any criticism has to be fair, surely.

That is possible of course, but the main issues seems to be that some fans criticise him even when he has played well.

There were some on twitter criticising him for Saturday's game!!!!!

His first game was away at Swindon (that horrible 1-0) as an 80th min sub, he was amazing for those 10 mins, the only man trying to go forward or do anything at all and has been one of my favourite Saints players since. On the tracking back front I think he just goes largely unnoticed, days like Dagenham and Redbridge away last season he was up and down the pitch all day long to be subbed to keep his fitness.

The single problem he was is at most away games he's closed down very quickly making it harder for him to have the impact some fans expect from him.

Still a top player who has a very good strike with him! Anyone see his goal against saints classic XI? :D

His first game was not away at Swindon it was at Bristol Rovers during Pardew's last game at the end of August last year. He came on for the last 25 mins or so

The problem is that because he doesn`t run around like an idiot people think that he is lazy. If you really watch him he covers a hell of a lot of the pitch and tracks back a lot. Twice in recent games I have seen him clear balls of our goal line. Not bad for a lazy, luxury player.

He does work hard for the team, watch him - he is 100% committed.

This is how I have felt in the past, too. I remember saying to someone once that his first touch seemed magical, but his 3rd or 4th touch looked like one of my mates. Of course, yesterday's goal he set up with Lallana shows otherwise, so that's a relief.
