Guly, or not Guly.....

...that is the question.

the fact is that however much we like the Lambert's and the Lallana's...Guly is not English , nor does he play the " English way" , what we do see is a variety and turns, flicks from someone who is totally unpredicatble in front of goal. He just doesn't do things as one might expect the average player to do. His two headers in the Midd'boro game show his insight and just how to take an opportunity, and he makes " finishing" look so easy!

The fact that he made assists for the 2 goals v. P'boro goes to show that he is not a " prima donna " and that he has definitely become a team player.

Nigel does well to "take care of him " and we see that he has been subbed in at least 75% of his starts, which IMO is a great move (esp. as he is around 30 already) and it helps him retain fitness as not everyone has run 95 mins. and be a Chaplow, or a Lallana.

I think we haven't the best of Guly by a long chalk and playing him at the top might prove to be the master-stroke in what is already a great start to the season - he may well end up as our top scorer, he'll certainly be high on the list of "assists" ..all of which will take the pressure off Ricky Lambert , who seems to revel in his versatile, roving role ala MLT.

A rough diamond on his arrival who is being turned into a gem.

Perhaps he is the blend of Papa Waigo & Antonio that we all wanted to sign in the summer but never realised we already had on our books.

Still has work to do (as does SDR) but IF we go up we can see the beginnings of some PL quality in this team to build upon

He plays back further up the pitch and central which allows him to influence the game more, it also gives us a more mobile, flexible and murcurial front line that can interchange within itself (Lallana, Guly and Lambert).

He has a decent work ethic too.

I am one of the Guly fans, and said before this season that he will shine as I feel against better players he will look better the same as Morgan.

I like him and feel he will become even better

I shaved my pubes out of respect for the Brazilian. He is awesome. And good looking. And not bad at Association Football too.

Don't get me wrong; our Scouser is world-class too. But not pube-shavingly so. More bread-n-butter big nest-of-pubes awesome. They are different. Kind of like having two testicles. Two separate balls. Each with its own style of pubes.

His first game was away at Swindon (that horrible 1-0) as an 80th min sub, he was amazing for those 10 mins, the only man trying to go forward or do anything at all and has been one of my favourite Saints players since. On the tracking back front I think he just goes largely unnoticed, days like Dagenham and Redbridge away last season he was up and down the pitch all day long to be subbed to keep his fitness.

The single problem he was is at most away games he's closed down very quickly making it harder for him to have the impact some fans expect from him.

Still a top player who has a very good strike with him! Anyone see his goal against saints classic XI? :D

I wasn't a fan when he came here I thought he was a bit lazy & couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo, but I'm pleased to say I've been proven wrong. I think he's one of the first on the team sheet, an he seems to be enjoying his football.

I'm surprised to see he's played relatively few matches in his career, and that he has made his most appearances at Saints.

I bemoaned the lack of strikers we have at the club at the start of the season, an injured Barnard, and ageing Connolly, and a lot of pressure on Lambert. I was desperate for the club to sign a new striker to bolster our attack, and that Guly and Forte were wingers, not strikers, and if they did play up front they'd just be filling in. Guly though has proved he can be as effective up front as any other striker, so all credit to him. I do still feel we need another striker, but now it's as either a long term replacement for Connolly or a decent back-up to Lambert (or both if that's possible!), not as an extra striker.

When I gave and received the thumbs up from Guly in Southampton after his first St Mary's goal, he became a legend in my eyes! It is a shame he's approaching his 30's, a few more years of him at his best would be brilliant.

I'm happy with him playing up front or off the striker away from home, just not right midfield as we get exposed if he's having an off day. If his passing is poor up front it's not as defensive costly, and besides, he's more use central anyway. Gives a good aerial presence too.

This. Exactly what I'd say. I'd possibly even simplify it too; Away from home to be considered up front only otherwise bench. At home up front or on the wing.

His first game was at Brizzle Rovers. Pardews last game. His first pass sailed out of touch, nowhere near a team mate. We all laughed.

His 2nd led to the 4th goal, scored by Barnard.

Defo a star, he opens up Championship defences with one instant pass like a hot knife through butter. He's so perceptive that I do believe he can do the same in the PL. He instantly knows the danger zone in or around the opposition's penalty area and, as the season progresses, more and more teammates are running into it to receive his (yet-to-be-released) pass, which instantly arrives - witness the one to Chaplow against the Posh. He does good defensively, too. I really hope he stays fit. I think he should start on the bench away in favour of SDR more often. Does he know anyone else plying their football trade in Italy and who would fit into the Saints team ethic?

Very good, well balanced article. Gotta agree that we got Guly at exactly the right time in his career. If we get promoted this season then I reckon he has got at least two seasons of Prem footie in him and hopefully Lambo can step up to the mark with him?

He's surely a luxury player. Good job we can afford a bit of luxury in the team.

I much prefer him up front where his skills will often lead to goals and his lack of workrate doesn't show up as much.

The problem is that because he doesn`t run around like an idiot people think that he is lazy. If you really watch him he covers a hell of a lot of the pitch and tracks back a lot. Twice in recent games I have seen him clear balls of our goal line. Not bad for a lazy, luxury player.

Definitely prefer him partnering Lambert up front than Connolly or Barnard. He's looking better pretty much all the time. I'm a big fan. Also it means we can play Chaplow as well in the team which I think it's a big plus at the moment because he's on great form. All in all, big yes to Guly and especially to him playing up front

I've always said that he isnt a winger and that his best position is playing off the striker and now we can all see that he should remain there. Connolly was great for us at the start of the season but in the last handful of games he hasnt been the same, passes have gone stray and when tackled he doesnt fight to get it back. Gullys knee is a slight problem atm so i wouldnt start him against Coventry, i think SDR should come in and play off the striker but have Gully on the bench. We should win on Saturday by the way we are playing so no need to risk players who are not 100% fit. I'd also rest Hammond if not suspended? as he's not looked all that much recently.

Chappers, Morgan, Cork, Lallana, with SDR and Lambo upfront, theres goals there if you ask me.

well unless he plays up front for me he's gonna struggle, he's certainly not a winger and I dont see 100% commitment to chasing back, maybe thats fitness maybe thats what role he's been asked to play, but as frustrating as his first touch can be at times at others its sublime and you couldn't ask for more.

think he'll end up playing a central role eventually and the fact that hes able to stand up to centre backs and has a reasonable turn of pace and unpredictability will mean that role will be his for as long as he wants to stay here.

well written article and i fully hold my hands up to thinking he was one of the worst players i had ever seen wearing a Saints shirt the first time i saw him play......but my oh my the man has gone on to prove me very wrong. He has a footballing brain and thats why i think he sometimes looked poor...it wasnt him it was the rest of our English players that just didnt expect the simple layoffs, the delicate chips etc. Saints and everyone else is seeing the best of Guly because NA has got the team up there with the Brazilian. Someone mentioned a luxury player, a bit like our famous no.7.....Guly is best playing just off Lambert....didnt a certain Le Tiss often play just off the strikers....long may he continue there and Saints will reap the rewards!

I'm certainly not one of his biggest fans and there's still plenty about his game that makes me want to tear my hair out (not that I have much to spare anymore) but looking back on our goals this season you just have to admit that he very often plays a key role in them. To state what is rapidly becoming the bleedin obvious, this player best position is as a striker.

I've said in the past I don't really see him as being a premier league quality player - please believe me when I say I'd be delighted to find myself eating those particular words.

I am sure someone will correct me, but aged 30 and been at 9 clubs, says it all really, flatters and deception would be my words, we wouldnt miss him.

Obviously... someone with talent...who hadn't found the right club ..until now.

..or is he actually (now) playing in a striker's role that suits him best....

Do Saints play like ANYTHING... slightly resembling Brazilian football ?

I simply don't understand this "lack of workrate" comment. It does not correspond with the Guly I watch.

I'll do it. Correction: he doesn't turn 30 until 31 December, so he's still 29. I know I don't like it when people tell me I'm older than I actually am, so give the guy his due. :)

But you're right about 9 clubs. He's been mostly in Italy...he started in Brazil (naturally) and made a move to Catania in 2002. He was in Italy until he came to Saints in 2010.

He's a quality player who has had some poor games this year, and has deserved his criticism.

But he's had an excellent few games and today by all accounts he's been outstanding. He's got a real touch of premiership class about him when he gets the time to play.

Not sure that I agree with this. IMHO he has played fairly constistantly this season. Like all players he has ups and downs but the fact that he is our second highest scorer and has so many "assists" in goals says a lot.

He's stepped up the last few games.

If he brings it to the table every other game then that's fine...and what is expected. It's when he gets in a complete rut for 5 or 6 games he is a compelte liability. Hopefully he can continue this form of setting up goals and chipping in occasionally....and working his b0ll0cks off.
