The Kraken Posted 2 November, 2011 Share Posted 2 November, 2011 There was obviously a bit of a ****-up with the minutes silence/applause at the beginning of last night's game. Not helped by the teams changing ends and the ref blowing his whistle late, but there we go. But in general I found the whole thing a bit flat. I may be wrong, but in recent years have we not had pictures of those who passed away flashed up on the screen during the minute? If not, it would be a nice touch to do it, and would add some personality to who we are supposed to be honouring. Even a scrolling list of names would be better than nothing, otherwise for a lot of people it's just a lot of meaningless clapping/silence. They had a two page spread in the programme of people to be remembered which was nice.............though not much use to those who don't get a programme

A shame then that they couldn't produce something to go up on the big screens, I genuinely don't know who I was honouring.

TBH if I hadn't bought a programme I wouldn't have known what was going on myself (much like the ref last night it would seem)

The Kraken Posted 2 November, 2011 Author Share Posted 2 November, 2011 An ideal occasion for a giant flag of Markus, I would have thought. Disagree; its "All Saints Day", meaning no one person should be remembered above others. The Liebherr Memorial Day is IMO the right time for the flag. Dimond Geezer Posted 2 November, 2011 Share Posted 2 November, 2011 (edited) I assumed it was for Billy Sharpe's son. Glad to see the ref showed some common-sense when Sharpe scored yesterday. He removed his shirt to show a tribute to his son on his T-shirt & the ref didn't book him. Well played ref. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/15547176.stm Edited 2 November, 2011 by Dimond Geezer
Big_Bald_Si Posted 2 November, 2011 Share Posted 2 November, 2011 I remember them announcing there'd be a minutes silence. Then, it wasn't silent at all, some moron from the P'boro fans shouted something, the players changed ends, then without any prompting (as far as i could tell) everyone broke into applause. very confusing! Window Cleaner Posted 3 November, 2011 Share Posted 3 November, 2011 (edited) ...or those fans living in another country... Can anyone recall some of the names who were on the list ?. .be nice to know. you can always download the programme if you're interested......not for free unfortunately, think it's £2. But back to All Soul's Day. I think the 1 minute silence was implemented at SMS quite a few years back, then it changed to 1 minutes applause a couple of years back so if it was supposed to be 1 silence again there was probably confusion. We have a bank holiday for it in France,in theory people travel to put flowers on graves of departed relatives but nowadays it's just another bank holiday. I felt quite embarrassed by the whole thing in all honesty.
No 2 to Maybush Posted 3 November, 2011 Share Posted 3 November, 2011 As its meant to be a show of respect, silence or clapping both seem appropriate ways of marking this. I wouldn't get your knickers in a twist about it - I thought it was novel.
THINWHITEDUKE Posted 3 November, 2011 Share Posted 3 November, 2011 Confusing no doubt, ref blew his whistle to get the players attention to come to the centre circle which prompted silence from the fans, then blew again some 15 seconds later to start the minute's silence, which prompted fans to applaud, which then confused everyone to think and say out loud 'that was short', hence embarrassed applause from ref, assistants, players and fans. Clusterf..., but let's not get out of our prams over it, refreshing I prefer to call it!!
Window Cleaner Posted 3 November, 2011 Share Posted 3 November, 2011 Confusion there was, some Saint's players were clapping, others not.Not analysed the incident in any great depth but I would say that it was the "home growns" who were clapping and the foreign players who remained silent. You'd have to look at the highlights to check that though. We have a bank holiday for it in France,in theory people travel to put flowers on graves of departed relatives . Same tradition in Sweden (where everyone HATES Hallowe'en - except small kids)...where there's no bank Holiday, but it coincides with schools' half-term. Some tit wasn't listening properly and started clapping, and most other people just joined in. I felt quite embarrassed by the whole thing in all honesty. I think a lot of people assumed that as it was so long after the announcement that the whistle was to end, not to begin, the minute's silence. It then became a minute's applause to cover up the people interrupting the minute's silence with applause. Huge balls-up of something so simple, as I'd worked out what was going on, I did my minute in silence anyway, whilst loads of people around me applauded and/or talked about the fact they thought it was meant to be a silence. Anyway, no big deal, just a misunderstanding.

The announcement said 'a period of silence', didn't it? Anyway, so long as we take a few moments to remember those no longer with us that's all that matters.
