Saints 2 Posh 1

Our home record is simply breathtaking. Next best to us (at eight out of eight) is WHU and some others on 4. Derby and Leeds could get to 5 tomorrow but you feel that at least one of them won't.

Across the leagues only Sheffield Weds, and Man City really compare with our fortress. What a team.

Nige .... 2 good goals from the training ground.

Maybe game was like a training game.

Crowd was great.

Passes need to be quicker

But 3 points 19 wins ....

Difficult to break teams down with 10 men and 2 up .. we'll look into that.

We'll take the win and 3 points.

Looking after Adam and Guly by taking them off.

All the players want to play 90 mins, all great lads and all playing their part.

Wonder if the team were feeling a bit tired after the awesome effort they put in against Boro...

Ah well, three points, move on to the next game!

Tells you something when you come away from a win feeling a bit disappointed it wasn't easier!

Didn't hear the second half but I guess at 2-0 and 10 men Nigel has a difficult decision as to whether he says "ok, look at it as 0-0 and go again" or, "just hold off a bit and keep passing it around". We won, good job, the table looks awesome, roll on Coventry!

Just back and v happy and relieved we won (ugly wins are good) but somehow I feel it was not a great victory to savour. I fancy had they kept 11 men on the pitch we would have won easily but all of a sudden we didn't know how to penetrate 10 men and we became too elaborate.

Least enjoyable game at SMS so far this season but the fact we got 3 points speaks volumes so that is a positive in itself. Negatives? Where was everyone - a nice autumn evening, and yet only 21000+ - are the armchair fans - you know who you are - getting a little too cosy?

And please Nigel let's not ask Kelvin to pass the ball out - he simply is not up to it.

Thought Chaplow was good again tonight, also thought Richardson's performance was far inferior to Butterfield's Saturday display.

A good 3 points but not a lot to stick in the memory.

Surely it's their loss?

Definatley a strange game. Even when 2 down boro looked happy to just park the bus and let us knock it rond the middle. I actually think games where teams try to press our pasing game give us a bit more impetus as we just seemed to run out of ideas how to break them down. Special mention for the officials tonight, who were utterly dreadful. Not the prettiest game but its another 3 points, how long until we're mathematically safe? ;-)

Good analyis that FF.

It's a game to forget...but be thankful we won! This is the reason I worry about these games more than the ones against WHU/Boro etc.

Credit to P'boro, I thought they played out of their skins even at 10 men. They look a much better side than what we played last year, I think they'll be fine in this league on that showing.

What great results for us in the other fixtures though....effectively we have a 6pt gap, with our GD included.

Now let's get our away wins up and running on Saturday and we could be laughing going into the international break!

Not the best performance of the season but no matter how you play you only get 3 points for a win, thought their keeper made a couple of good saves 2nd half to keep us down to 2. Bloody lino in the first half gave Guly off side when he was still at the bar in the Northam, Chappers was my MOM again.

3pts and home record intacted which is good, but I can't remember feeling so meh about a win before.

Great start but the sending off seemed to kill the game and both sides just looked like they were happy seeing out the game. With a man advantage I was hoping for a bit of champagne football and a bit of a cricket score. Playing possession football between the keeper and defence while a good idea when winning, isn't much fun to watch for 60+mins.

Best thing was the singing from different parts of SMS in the second half, shame we can't get that going more often.

Deffo a game to forget 3pts move on.

4 far tougher home games to come next. Brighton will be our toughest of the season so far IMO.

2 of our last 4 games have been against the second placed team in the league at the time. Being as we were first at the time, how can 2 of our upcoming games be any tougher than those?

Even Peterborough are above Blackpool and one point behind Brighton, both of whom we have coming up.

Unless I'm missing the irony, of course.

Significant, and although Boro win only confirms our great result on Saturday. How many points do we need for 17th ?

Dalek... Seeing as you've now posted a number of times that you consider we're on target or will finish 17th, can you maybe share your thoughts on this prediction?

EG, Can you share the number of points your 17th place prediction is based on? From those points can you also share your thoughts on which games you had us down as Wins, Draws, and losses to total the points that would have us in 17th place? Can you offer where your predicted results compare against our actual results and where that leaves your predictions for the rest of the season?

I'm asking a genuine question as despite the number of posts I see regarding your prediction and the belief you have that this is where we will finish.... you have yet to say why and how you came to this conclusion. It's not like you've just reckoned where we may finish as others have done, you have been very adamant about it. Therefore you must have calculated what you'd thought would be our results over the course of the season and compared them against previous Championship campaigns to come to your conclusion.

Banter aside, you've taken the critics of your prediction well and still continued to persist with it... you should now be in the position to at least share from our results to date where your prediction is still on track?

No Adrain has taken to describing every game as a tough one for a a variety of reasons. I think it's a coping mechanism I'm sure he is expecting us to crash and burn at some stage (though he wouldn't be alone, I have to keep reigning in my expectations)

Seemed like everytime the Northam shouted STEEEVE he 'd just shank the ball into touch or mis-control a simple pass.

Agreed, don't think that chant helped us at all to be honest.... was more like something you'd do to put an opposition player off his game.

We started tentatively, trying to suss out where we stood against a good attacking team, but probing for the defensive weaknesses that we knew existed from the number of goals that they have conceded. All of a sudden, we found those weaknesses and were two up within 15 minutes or so and could relax a bit. Control of the midfield didn't seem as easy as it had been against Middlesbrough, but we won our fair share of the battles there and looked to be the more penetrating passers of the ball. Perhaps the massive effort that we had put in on Saturday took its toll a little as we weren't quite as crisp as we had been in that match.

Following the two goal cushion, the sending off for Posh really changed the dynamics of the game and they went deep and defended well, inviting us to go forward and break them down if we wished to score more. But we were quite content to pass the ball about, denying them possession. For quite a time, Posh didn't have a touch of the ball and we kept it in our half, perhaps hoping that they would be forced to venture forward to attack the ball and we would then hit them with the sucker punch on the break. They bided their time patiently and all of a sudden they had put a decisive ball through and their striker had pounced, beating our defence for pace and tucking the ball away to set up a nervy last quarter. Posh sensed an unlikely draw or even a win and suddenly applied the pressure to us. But we held firm, continued to deny them the ball wherever possible and defended with a bit more effort and concentration to see the game out.

I suspect that had they equalised, we had a further gear in reserve if needed, but not much time to apply ourselves. So a strange game really, easy in parts, where our domination should have given us one or more extra goals, but in the end I left with a feeling almost of relief, but happy that we had another three points, a continuing run of home wins and a further two points ahead of the Skates and our nearest rivals WH too.

When the match lost a bit of its pace and interest, worth a mention that the crowd, particularly the Northam and the Kingsland corner, were in good spirits. They started to call out Steve to De Ridder every time he touched the ball and as that caught on and grew, they started to call out the Christian name of each player to receive the ball. It lightened the mood considerably and there were times when a succession of passes had the crowd singing that we were taking the p*ss. I can't remember us ever shouting the player's name out like that before and I thought that it added something good that I think might be repeated from now on.

We really didn't click today, not sure why. Against both 10 & 11 men we didn't create too much. Peterborough were poor offered little.

Lallana definitely a bit out of sorts at the moment, guessing he's not 100% fit?

Really poor crowd in considering all the deals that have been offered and how well we're doing. Rubbish atmosphere, not helped with it not being the most exciting of games and the pathetic support from Posh, but that's no excuse for the Northam taking their cringeworthy levels to new extremes with their shouts of 'Steve' etc.

In a change of tact, Darren Ferguson did his post-match interviews before Nigel.

Ferguson conducted himself well, but at one point made a comment along the lines of 'our players don't ***** and moan when it comes to yellow cards'. A journalist asked for clarification on this, to which he stubbornly replied 'I'm not talking about Southampton' and walked off.

Nigel then came out for his interviews - I get the impression that he wanted to avoid Fergie Junior at all costs - and he was in a generally good mood.

I really hope it doesn't; it contributed to the feeling that the second half was a carnival. We didn't ever get going in the second half and just seemed content to go along with the "ole" and rubbish, we could and should have pressed more. Their goal came from some sloppy play which was prevalent throughout the whole of our second half.

That said their goal was about the only shot on goal they had in the whole game; but we hugely took our foot off the gas and as good a first half as it was, it was a very poor second half.

Just back after the game and a few pints afterwards.

Started pretty well - explosive stuff and 2 good goals, then they had a man sent off. We then took our foot of the gas and they got back into it before half time. De Ridder came on and we were a bit more lively - we should have had a third definitely.

Their goal was a bit ridiculous, Fonte got caught cold by Sinclair's pace and we suddenly made in nervy. For long periods it was like a training game - it was attack vs defence for long periods. We really didn't test them as much as we should have but it seemed as if it was by choice rather than necessity. They really didn't threaten for long enough to make it 'nervy'. We made it nervy for ourselves by letting one in and being too lax. It wasn't as if they had huge numbers of chances.

Even after we scored it was still comfortable possession football. We were clearly running down the clock, I mean Lambo got free in the area in the last 15 and took it to the corner!

The disappointing thing was a few miscontrols, a few misplaced passes and then their goal which made it a little more interesting. But we clearly had the confidence to see it out keeping the ball and not really going forward.

If we had really gone for it we would have battered them but as it was we didn't need to. I can't see us being in a position to play like we did in the second half many times this season, but against better opposition we won't have the luxury of doing it.

Well pleased for the win, even ugly wins are fantastic.

Its all about keeping up the home form, that in itself will play a big part against teams before they even set foot upon St Marys turf.

End of the day, we can't keep playing this sensationally all season, Utd, City, Barca, Real etc etc will all get their fair share of scrappy wins, but thats what makes champions, being tested and coming out the other side.

It was f******g ctingeworthy. Grown men in their 40s and 50s continuously cracking up at shouting a player's first name. Sad t**ts.

Name calling was hilarious. And following on from the plastic fans thread it seemed to start from the same area as those chants on Saturday so I guess you have to take the **** with the sugar. Never heard that at a game before, must have been distracting though.

We were way too casual 2nd half but it was still enjoyable. But the I remember the hoof it to Scott Hiley days :) so I'm easily pleased!

I hope we dont call the players first names out again, it made us look like a bunch of idiots. Other fans will think we are complete mongs
