Pilchards Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 A win tonight would make it 19 home successes in a row for the Saints. Post-war only Liverpool in 1971 and 1972 have achieved a better run of form at home. Hull also managed 19 straight home wins in 1965/66. The English record is 25 successive home wins by Bradford Park Avenue in 1926/27. To match that record Saints would need to notch up wins against Posh, Brighton, Blackpool, Hull, Crystal Palace, Bristol City, Leicester and Cardiff. To beat it they would then need to defeat Burnley on February 11. Most successive home wins 25 Bradford PA (1926-27) 22 Rotherham (1938-39) 21 Brentford (1929-30) 21 Liverpool (1971-72) 20 Preston (1891-92) 20 Newcastle (1905-06) 19 Sunderland (1890-91) 19 Sheff Wed (1899-00) 19 Reading (1931-32) 19 Hull (1965-66)
Jack Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 That is a HUGE ask. I think we'll slip up before Xmas, it's inevitable that we're going to have an off day
ant Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 These threads only serve to make me more nervous on matchdays! I believe 'one game at a time' is the mantra that a certain N. Adkins will employ. Actually he just claims not to know about these records (if you'll believe that)

Golden Balls Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 Best home run since 1971. Very impressive!

MarkSFC Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 didnt manure achieve 19 before city smashed them?
JRM Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 Long may it continue!! I know it feels like tempting fate, but we all know this run will come to an end sometime, maybe even tonight, but the fact is we have already recorded 18 straight home wins that we have had the opportunity to enjoy in our lifetime, it will be something to tell the grandkids about!
JRM Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 didnt manure achieve 19 before city smashed them? don't think so , they drew at home to Basle in the champs league
Golden Balls Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 didnt manure achieve 19 before city smashed them? I haven't looked it up but I think they went undefeated for a long time, but not won 18 in a row
Andyb1 Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 don't think so , they drew at home to Basle in the champs league I heard that too, maybe just league games?
Pilchards Posted 1 November, 2011 Author Posted 1 November, 2011 I heard that too, maybe just league games? They drew with WBA last season which would of been 26 straight until the champions league game I'm becoming the new MLG
Jimmy_D Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 It's possible we'll get the record, but if we don't it's still an awesome run.
Dellman Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 Excuse ignorance but is the 19 wins all comps or just league and what was it for Bradford PA and all those others in the list?
Ian the Red Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 (edited) That is a HUGE ask. I think we'll slip up before Xmas, it's inevitable that we're going to have an off day Why? It is not inevitable that we're going to have an off day. 18 consecutive wins seems to dismiss your argument! Did Arsenal have an off day when they went the entire without losing? NO. So why is it inevitable that we will? Do you watch Saints regularly? Edited 1 November, 2011 by Ian the Red
Minty Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 Why? It is not inevitable that we're going to have an off day. 18 consecutive wins seems to dismiss your argument! Did Arsenal have an off day when they went the entire without losing? NO. So why is it inevitable that we will? Do you watch Saints regularly? OK, so it's not *technically* inevitable, but it is statistically HIGHLY unlikely that we'll break the record, which is clearly what he means, irrespective of how Saints are playing at the moment. It doesn't matter if he watches Saints regularly or not, I think it's a fair statement. We can break the record, but the odds of doing so are still very big.

Call me a pedant but Posh would be 19, Brighton 20, Bpool 21, Hull 22, Palace 23, Brizzle 24, Leicester 25 and Cardiff would be 26 and a new record

Micky Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 don't think so , they drew at home to Basle in the champs league Really, shyte, when do we have to play Basle...!!!!?????
The Cat Posted 1 November, 2011 Posted 1 November, 2011 Really, shyte, when do we have to play Basle...!!!!????? About 3 seasons time in the Champions League qualifiers.
Ian the Red Posted 2 November, 2011 Posted 2 November, 2011 OK, so it's not *technically* inevitable, but it is statistically HIGHLY unlikely that we'll break the record, which is clearly what he means, irrespective of how Saints are playing at the moment. It doesn't matter if he watches Saints regularly or not, I think it's a fair statement. We can break the record, but the odds of doing so are still very big. Minty, the point is we still win at home when we dont play that well. eg, Millwall or even last night when we should have scored 5 or 6 but let our game slip. So we've had a few games where we have underperformed but we still have the wins. What gets me is the negative "its inevitable" attitude when clearly Adkins has installed self believe, motivation and coaching techniques that have improved every player, plus a winning mentality. Yes, we will be beaten at some stage, no one knows when; but we have an opportuntity to break a long standing record and it is not inevitable that we will not do so. We have as much chance as any team in our position. And yes I have been following Saints since the late 60's so am well aware of the previous Saints teams that promise so much and fail to deliver but this team/squad is different.
Junction 9 Posted 2 November, 2011 Posted 2 November, 2011 Having just looked at the fixtures, after the Blackpool game in December we go over two months until the next saturday home fixture. What a pain in the arse.
jasonb Posted 2 November, 2011 Posted 2 November, 2011 I'm confused or I've lost count lol. Is it 19 wins at home in all comps? 17 in the league? I keep seeing the two different figures mentioned...

jasonb Posted 2 November, 2011 Posted 2 November, 2011 Nice one, thought I was losing it for a minute...
Kaiser Soze Posted 2 November, 2011 Posted 2 November, 2011 Has anyone ever won every single home game in a league season? Not beyond us I don't think.
jawillwill Posted 2 November, 2011 Posted 2 November, 2011 About 3 seasons time in the Champions League qualifiers. Surely we'd get automatic qualification?
Junction 9 Posted 2 November, 2011 Posted 2 November, 2011 I have been wondering if the loss to Man utd had affected this record at all, it turns out it doesn't as we drew the previous home game 0-0 with Notts county.
