An idiot abroad

I cannot understand how Gervais is so popular. I saw him at that Diana show a few years ago where he was doing stand-up and it was absolutely cringeworthy.

He was hopeless.

After about 15 mins he got booed off stage but the content to me wasn't much different to what I've seen him do elsewhere

never saw the appeal in an Idiot abroad. I think that if you said to any British person to go to somewhere and just be whingy, negative and hate the place a lot of us could do it as good/bad as this Pilkington chap. Its something as a nation we do well. A few of the Aussies I've spoke to who have seen it just comment 'its just a show about a whingin' pom'...which it is.

Gervais I'm not too keen on these days - getting a bit big for his boots. Like Steve Merchant a lot. Was surprised to see him in a crap film i watched a few weeks ago called hall pass. Basically if it wasnt for him I would of turned it off 20mins in. His scene after the credits is textbook.

Gervais' 'comedy' is just taking the p*ss out of people.

Went to see him in a stand up at the BIC a few years back and he was ripping it out of disabled people.

Bang out of order and a fair amount of the audience got up and left.

He was making light of Cancer in a recent episode of an idiot abroad. Again not funny in the slightest.

he's erratic, the podcasts were great. recycling them so much isn't. some of the stand up is poor, but most his sit-com writing has been very good. he should probably have stuck to writing. still don't mind him but the jokes are getting a bit old. and ricky doesn't hide how much fun he's having with his career and life, and how much money it makes him. maybe he shouldn't have to, but it's not endearing to most people really is it. i'd like to think if it were me i could enjoy it while being a bit more humble. strange though, as in the podcasts and audiobooks, and some interviews when he's being more serious, you see a different person. he does care about a lot of topics, does have a lot of sense, but his comedic persona seems to have merged with his real self too much in recent years.

karl is funny though, and steve merchant, who is probably the funniest and best writer of the duo anyway.

anyway, if it's a choice of their work or endless singing and dancing talent shows i'll stick with ricky.

Really? How do you know this then, you hang around with him? What we see as the public is his comedy persona. He eggs it on to make it funny, I agree at times it has become a little boring (stuff he writes on his blog) and the last stand up was poor compared to the rest. But how do you know what he's really like? A lot people seem to think he's arrogant, yet, as you say if you listen to other interviews like on Inside the Actor's Studio and Desert Island Discs, he's clearly not. He is extremely humble, grateful of his position and as very knowlegeable and intelligent. People who think he's arrogant, just don't get his media character (IMO).

I, too, have listened to the all the Podcasts XFM Radio Shows etc and agree, this TV show isn't as good as anything else they've been involved in. Karl's views are funny, but the Podcasts and Audio Books were still the best thing the three of them have done.
