The Kraken Posted 1 November, 2011 Share Posted 1 November, 2011 Reading that thread I have to say I'm very surprised just how many fans were actually right behind the appointment from the beginning. Even myself; I know I felt a bit "underwhelmed" at the time, but my post in that thread says "he could be just the man we need for the job right now". There were a few others not hugely bowled over by the appointment, but even then pretty much all of those adopted a "wait and see" approach and stated they'd support him nonetheless. I guess I'm so surprised due to the nature of sneering comments I regularly see on here from people claiming that a huge proportion of the fanbase had written him off as not good enough before he even arrived here. It's I suppose very similar to the Jos Hooiveld appointment where if you didn't immediately say he was going to be great you were apparently writing him off and saying he would fail. I'll stick to my prediction that this is a sticking plaster job so that Cortese can tie up all the loos ends before he clears off in January with the club up for sale thereafter. I don't give a monkey's that most of you think I'm a grumpy bastard who is hard to please, this is the worse possible outcome of all the far more exciting options that supposedly were open to us - what happened to the other 49? - in any case I'm not mug enough to keep paying scarce dosh to support this regime any more. I've already posted my request for a refund on my ST for what' s left of this season. I'm out of here and good luck to all of you guys who have been suckered into believing the club bull**** that this was the "best possible appointment". Oh! come on the blokes only been in management for 5 minutes so it is bound to end in tears but then neither Cortese or I will be around to give a ****. Sad day but everything comes to an end... doddisalegend Posted 1 November, 2011 Share Posted 1 November, 2011 Here's the thread - http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?25200-Adkins-appointed&highlight=Nigel+Adkins+appointed - looks like a lot of happy people at the time... To me it seems to be a general feeling of relief that we'd sorted out a new manager (I think any manager would have got a similair reaction at the time) and hope he could sort things out (which of course he has) rather than mass hysteria that Nigel was the second coming.... david in sweden Posted 1 November, 2011 Share Posted 1 November, 2011 (edited) Many people just aren't used to a positive attitude coming from a football manager in such terms, and some of our own fans can't accept it . even Wenger, Dalglish and Ferguson don't talk that way and Adkins has been using the same vocabulary since he took over when we were in the bottom four of L1. Now we have made such a good start in CCC. Those same people think it's all bull*hit and he doesn't really mean it . Here is a man who has played the game himself, managed at non-League level, worked as a physiotherapist - then assistant and eventually manager of a no-hope club with no funds to speak of .....and still won promotion and kept them at CCC level. What better qualifications could anyone have to move on? In the true traditions of Lawrie McMenemy's " man-management " principles. He is now a physiotherapist turned psychologist with great success. and isn't afraid to hold a player back who is unfit, instead of forcing them to play on an injury, and maybe become worse! Can't believe he STILL gets so much criticism. Whatever it is he's on..there are still some of our fan base who could use the same remedy ! Charlie Wayman Posted 1 November, 2011 Share Posted 1 November, 2011 Agreed, he really isn't afraid to make changes on an individual game basis. Of course it does help that we have such good backup to turn to for different options; Guly up front, Chaplow out wide, Butterfield in for Richardson. Add in the different options that de Ridder, Schneiderlin and the returning Barnard will give us and we have a squad that can be rejigged at will for a variety of different formations and lineups, and a manager seemingly brave enough and astute enough to get the best out of whoever he selects. Let's hope he can keep all of them happy. It was quite noticeable on Saturday at the end of the game that both de Ridder and Schneiderlin ignored the clapping fans in the Itchen and rushed down the tunnel looking anything but pleased. All the others milked it for all it was worth.

LostBoys Posted 1 November, 2011 Share Posted 1 November, 2011 I was one of those who posted he was underwhelmed on Adkins appointment having thrown my hat into the ring over Martin O'Neil as my preference but I have to say Adkins has hardly put a foot wrong literally. Great football performances from great team selections. You cannot ask for more.
Bobbyboy Posted 1 November, 2011 Share Posted 1 November, 2011 He is not a genuis. But we are winning 2/3 of our matches. That is exceptional, truly exceptional. When he can provide a theory on the speed of neutrinos he might be a genius. Until then he's just a brilliant football manager. Has anyone thought to ask him? Until we ask him we won't know.
