corsacar saint Posted 29 October, 2011 Share Posted 29 October, 2011 Would these two,not be worth a serious punt in January? Emnes is lightening quick, extremely skilful, and by his record this season, definately knows where the goal is . As for Steele, what a prospect,3 of the saves he made in the second half were absolutely breath taking.[The save from Rickies sensational volley at the end was out of the very top drawer]. Saint_clark Posted 29 October, 2011 Share Posted 29 October, 2011 Davis is doing nothing wrong. In fact on the evidence so far, he'd be in the NPC team of the year IMO. Emnes however would be a great acquisition, if a tad expensive.
Kingsland Codger Posted 29 October, 2011 Share Posted 29 October, 2011 Emnes was particularly impressive. As you say, lightening quick, extremely skilful and with a fine attitude. Never gave up and a doughty opponent.
welshsaint92 Posted 29 October, 2011 Share Posted 29 October, 2011 Emnes was the only player for them that caught my eye. Although he didnt have any service I thought he looked pretty lively. And I agree with Saint_Clark,Davis is doing nothing wrong at the moment. Yes he's getting on abit but I think he's got another season or two left in him. I dont think a GK is a priority. Lazlo78 Posted 29 October, 2011 Share Posted 29 October, 2011 I was unimpressed with Emnes after the first 15 minutes of the match and this might have influenced how I saw him the rest of the match (confirmation bias and all that) - I really thought he was poor today and nothing worked out for him. deadpanmatt Posted 29 October, 2011 Share Posted 29 October, 2011 Emnes was there only real spark today; fortunately for us he was expected to do it all on his own up top which made it easier to nullify him.
L1Minus10 Posted 29 October, 2011 Share Posted 29 October, 2011 The keeper made some good saves 2nd half but in the first half he was **** and his command of the box was non-existant.
saints-cris Posted 30 October, 2011 Share Posted 30 October, 2011 We dont need a keeper at all, Davis is fantastic, plus the fact he clearly loves it here. Emnes I wouldnt say no to however, definate quality there.
Alanh Posted 30 October, 2011 Share Posted 30 October, 2011 Emnes is more of a wide player than a striker for me. I think he could do a job for us in a similar way to SDR.

Emnes however would be a great acquisition, if a tad expensive. Davis' distribution is poor and always has been. Bart is so much more comforable and relaxed on the ball and showed it again against Palace the other night. Davis hardly ever comes for crosses BUT is a good short stoppper. Wade Garrett Posted 30 October, 2011 Share Posted 30 October, 2011 Emnes was OK in the first half, but there is no way Adkins would put up with his poor work-rate. The keeper wasn't great, punched a cross when there was nobody near him, and the saves he made Kelvin would have made no problem. Watched Steele being warmed up at half-time and he was on his heels every time he caught the ball. I wouldn't sign either.
Secret Site Agent Posted 30 October, 2011 Share Posted 30 October, 2011 I have always liked Steele for many years, but I wouldn't want him if it upset the apple cart and for me, he would come here as number two, which he wouldn't do. Emnes on the other hand I think CDAJFU. I believe Nige would be able to bring him on more, and he would be a success.
sandwichsaint Posted 30 October, 2011 Share Posted 30 October, 2011 For me KD is probably our single most-improved player over the last 12 months. He's always had the shot-stopping ability (Brentford away a couple of years ago anybody?) and has always had that 'players' player' mentality, an absolute model pro in all respects. Always used to be a question mark over his consistency, his communication and his command of the area, and to a lesser extent (for me anyway, about his distribution). This year he has put all those negatives behind him and looks a man totally on top of his game, and very at ease in the roll he plays within the team and the group. Undoubtedly more great work behind the scenes by the ex GK and pychologist that is NA. This season I think he has been one of our stand-out players (one of many) and I feel very comfortable with him between the sticks. Definitely no vacancy there for the foreeeable future. None of that stops us looking for a third GK though although not sure Steel yesterday (why would boro sell?) is any better than Smithers or Flinders? Only saw the stream but thought Emnes looked v good and would definitely give us options in the wide areas - again why would Boro sell at the moment, and he will most probably end up on the bench at a 'big club'. miserableoldgit Posted 30 October, 2011 Share Posted 30 October, 2011 This thread illustrates all that is interesting in football debate. Some quite extreme, opposing views on players performances in one game. FWIW, I thought that Emnes was their only real threat. He was very quick and very tricky. Would love to see him in a Saints shirt.
Seaside Saint 2 Posted 30 October, 2011 Share Posted 30 October, 2011 Think McCormack at Leeds would be a better bet than Emnes, and probably cheaper. He's just as quick and seems a more consistent scorer, don't think Emnes has hit the net for a few games now.

Golden Balls Posted 30 October, 2011 Share Posted 30 October, 2011 There is no need to replace Davis at this time. Maybe if we go up it would be worth looking at a younger keeper who can step in when SKD steps down. My choice would be Kasper Schmeichel if Leicester fail to get romotion. Emnes however, I would love to see him here. Not sure where he would fit in but he looked a real threat and is still young.

itchen Posted 30 October, 2011 Share Posted 30 October, 2011 Don't get all this faint praise of Davis "he's a good shot stopper". He does so much more than that. On at least two occasions yesterday he saved us by coming out of his area and heading the ball away. He reads the game so well and is almost always in the right place at the right time. What more do his critics want?

A couple of years ago i'd have agreed with you. However Davis has massively improved this season, claims a lot of crosses and (despite the odd misplaced short pass) his distribution is much better. corsacar saint Posted 30 October, 2011 Author Share Posted 30 October, 2011 Can, I just explain that I was not advocating that we sign Jason Steele to replace Kelvin. I think he could be the one for the longer term and to replace Bart, who has unfortunately never been the same since his injury a few years back. It is unlikely Boro will let him go,because they rate him very highly.

Easily as good as Davis IMO, but with differening strengths and weakness'. His main weakness used to be his kicking, but that has improved a lot this season. Until Davis retires, we're sorted between the sticks IMO.
