Saints 3-0 Boro' - Reactions

Lighthouse

Recommended Posts

I was over in the Uk and managed the Westham and Boro games either side of a visit to the states!

Saints were magnificent a hard fought 1-0 over the hammers was followed by a classy demolition of Boro

my observations from today

1) Chappers was magnificent what an engine looked like three plaers and not one a revelation this season

2) We always seem so much classier with Lalanna playing

3) Hoiveld and Fonte seem an excellent pairing now

4) Lambert does so much more than most goal scorers do particulalry on holding the ball up and providing assists

5) Our midfield is phenomenal

This is certainly the best Saints team I hsve seen probably since the mid eighties certainly in terms of all round team work

Long may it continue

Back to the web next week until Christams at least

Delighted with that result following what I saw on Australian TV last week against Reading. What a phenomenal run of home results. Away form isn't too dusty either. We must just save up our crap away performances for Sky to lull the rest of the league. Great to be a Saints fan again. Well done Nigel Adkins, Cortese and the whole squad.

It's not just Chaplow tho is it?

Look at the improvement in Kelvin over the last 12 months, in Hammond, in Lambert, and indeed in Chaplow, and in others as well.

Adkins is just ticking all the boxes: the players are fit, they want to play, they want to play for each other and they want to play for Saints!

NA has clearly set out the vision and equally clearly all the players are buying into it; once you have that you can start winning games of football, and NA has shown he has the nouse for us to consistently do that.

What are the odds on us going unbeaten at home all season?

We have beaten W Ham, Midds, Leeds, Millwall, Brum .... and to be honest none of those have got near us..... what's left? Cardiff? Seaweed? Hull? Palace? Pomski? Reading? Derby?Ipswich?... can you see us losing a home game on this form? ... I can't!

COYRs

Absolutely. For so long we seemed to sign players who then got progressively worse whilst they were here. At last we seem to have coaching setup that noticeably improves our players.

No, it isn't just Chaplow, but the change in Chaplow is the most noticeable and those other players you mention were here much before him. It isn't as if Chaplow was carrying extra weight, or that he didn't look a decent committed player when he was last here on loan. It seems to me that the improvement in him is psychological. Somehow his confidence might have been in tatters at Preston and has received a massive boost here. Other players have certainly improved along the same lines, but none more so than Chaplow and because Claridge had watched him last season at Preston, the improvement in his demeanour has been very noticeable and worthy of comment. Most of us didn't see him last season and just remember glimpses of him from the last time he was here. Perhaps Adkins watched some videos from that season and saw potential and possibilities, a rough diamond that could be polished

I think we are the best team in this league, we need to stay focused, but if we can win on Tuesday by another good margin we will be looking good going into an away trip to Cov!!!

I think we have yet to prove we are the best team on away fixture before we can claim that we really are the best team. Perhaps we'll be able to take some of that home confidence to Coventry.

D'accord, exactement! Quatre quatre deux sonne encore mieuxs en Francais!

What I did notice in the video about Connolly's goal that you couldn't see at the game, was how he hit with the outside of his foot to send it to his right while making the defenders and GK think it was going left. Absolute class.

Prompted by other posts, I've just had a glance at a 'boro forum. All the posts seem to be about how poorly they played. Gotta face the facts, it had nothing to do with them being poor. They were simply played off the park today by a dominant opposition. Saints won this game, it was not gifted to them by 'boro.

My brother, who watches Boro reasonably often, said that they were outmuscled and outplayed. He had no gripe with the result reckoning that they had got away with it at only 3-0. FWIW I thought that boro played a nice passing game but it lacked bite. We mixed the play a lot more and always looked the more threatening.

Actually they weren't. They were probably the best footballing side we have had down here this season. They simply couldnt get through and didn't want it as much as us.

They will be up there come the end of the season and I hope fans appreciate what a good side, we have just thrashed.

This - we made them look ordinary and they won't play against a better team performance this year.

Not such a good result as in 1962 when we beat them 6 0 but with all goals coming in the second half but better than I expected

Think automatic promotion is between our selves West Ham and Birmingham.

I will be interested if we buy a top class CB and striker in the window to show we really want promotion

Those of us with longer memories will recall how Lawrie Mac and indeed Brian Clough took a squad of / fairly good / slightly better than average / developing players

and galvanised them into a tight, well-organised unit that plays well above themselves and everyone else's expectations and were, at times, almost unplayable.

Well ....looks like Nigel is on the same road. Davis has become a REALLY good custodian, Adam Lallana is so good as never before - (and would surely be in an England squad were we in the Prem. already). After years of seeing Ricky Lambert scoring regularly in the lower divisions, he suddenly looks like a MLT clone, and plays all over the pitch and is also a quality dead ball specialist. Few people thought to see much from the " veteran " David Connolly - even if he got fit, but when he's in possession seems to have all the time in the world - and almost makes the opposition look like " slow-motion mime artists ". Chaplow must be the signing of the decade...£50K is less than an Academy salary...I hope he punishes Ferguson on Tuesday for being such an ar*e and letting him go from Preston. Our gain Darren, our gain.

Guly, (whoever was responsible for his signing..Cortese?).. seems to be in his second childhood, and given a run-out at CF might well pass Ricky's goals tally during the season.

Getting picked for the start eleven must be a real lift, but what about the excitement of sitting on the bench - waiting to get involved...!

No wonder we get " impact performances " from the subs. They must be more wound up than those out on the pitch. GREAT FOOTBALL long may it continue.

I actually saw that game.

It looked deadlocked at HT 0-0, and then George Kirby scored a hat-trick in 4 minutes - still a Saints record. I think -

It's a pity that there's no archived film footage of George Kirby (or at least easily available) I'd love to see that diving header from about 20 yards out again, one of my favourite ever goals, even if the opposition was probably no better than today's pub standard.

Just home after a 440-mile round trip to SMS. I saw Forest earlier in the season, and now Boro. Saints are growing in confidence on the evidence of my only two home games this season so far. I hope they are still performing like that when I next come up for Blackpool. What a pleasure to watch! Two comments - like Charlie Wayman above, Guly's header was indeed finely judged, and just in front of us, but the defenders were panicking trying to pick up Lambert, and left him space, so in my book Lambert should claim three assists yesterday! My other point is the way that Saints don't go arguing all the time with the officials. I know it's easier when the game is going your way, but it really gets up my nose when players continually harangue refs and linesmen. I've never seen one change their mind because of the abuse they get, and to me, if I was refereeing, it would turn me against that team. I put this good behaviour down as one more example of the excellent job Adkins and his team are doing. Keep it going Saints!

well, there a nice piece on page 71 of In that Number, including a pic.of Kirby's second goal (which they say was from 10 yards)...where were you standing that night ?

...and in fact. Middlesboro weren't SUCH a bad side that season. They finished 4th, whilst we had ended up mid table.(11th) the highest position all season.

Though not that bad, when you consider we were bottom after the first 10 games, though things did look up after we signed Kirby, Burnside and Stuart Williams.

Still you're right about the lack of film in those days. I'd love to have some film on FA Cup 6 th round, 2nd replay when we slaughtered Forest (then a first div.side ) 5-0 at White Hart Lane.

Surprised by people saying that Boro were poor. Thought some of their passing, first touch and general football was decent. They just didn't have (or weren't allowed to) any penetration.

Yep, we prevented penetration like a father tagging along on his daughter's first date. This is what some people don't get. Boro were not carp, we just made them look that way.

Unless you read the boro forums where they reckon we were ok but that they didn't turn up (looking at the defending or lack of it for the third goal they may have a point) truth is probably some where in between.

Breaking down the opposition, killing their spirit and confusing/Running them ragged is a part of the game. By the time the sucker punch came, they were disorientated. In any other game they would have handled the final move. We broke them down.

I suppose the only thing I want to add is those that were knocking half the team after the Reading game should maybe consider their reaction the next time we play badly.

Why? if the team play badly people will say so. If they play well we will praise them that's what fans do.

Having just watched the highlights I didn't realize Guly's first goal was so well taken. Cracking headed goal. He is a class player on his day.

Playing up front suits him so much better. Great interview with him in the matchday programme. Left his last club becuase they played him out on the wing prefers to play up front (you can see why after saturday). Almost jacked it in at saints last season, but loves it here now, the best thing is the people when the fans sing his name it makes him very happy.
