Saints 3-0 Boro' - Reactions

Perhaps

One stand was pretty sparsely populated in the central section, a few down low,a few up high a few more in the middle but there were entire blocks of red seats.Opposed to the TV cameras anyway.

Itchen Corporate and Blocks 1 to 3 which were shut.

I think we should stop moaning about the attendances and start comparing them with other clubs in this division.

Boro didn't turn up in all honesty, and if you don't turn up at St Mary's these days you will get absolutely tonked - which they were.

I was amazed at how straight forward that win was, Boro huffed and puffed a little in the 2nd half but didn't have any punch about them. Emnes looks like he's used all his goals up in the first few weeks of the season, but we did very well to marshal him as we did.

Chappers was again absolutely everywhere, box to box, right to left, left to right...he's just incredible at the moment and has to be one of the guaranteed names on that team sheet right now.

Guly showed what a good player he is up top - his movement was excellent and he made some terrific runs. His first goal was such a good header, the keeper had no chance with that - he's adjusted to life at this level with ease, as most of the team has.

I thought they couldn't handle Lambo at all, he won so much in the air and they didn't know how to deal with him - he was causing them all sorts of problems. It's just a shame that he's waited this long to play at this level, he's been wasted in L1/L2 over the last few years.

Great to see Lallana back, but you could tell he's still not 100%. He'll get back in the groove after some games, but he didn't do much of note today.

Thought Butters was terrific, we're very lucky to have 2 evenly matched right backs at this club. In fact we have quality throughout it - the subs aren't ''reserve'' players for us, they're all impact players who can all play a part and change a game. It's been a long time since we've had a squad of players like this.

Lallana crossed to Lambert who headed across goal for 2nd goal, he just has to be on pitch and all of a sudden opposition are putting 2 on him every time he gets ball which creates so much space for others.

Totally agree about squad

great cross and finish for the first one, great move and finish for the second - and the third one will be used in future as a great example of stylish ball retention, even showboating, but with end product!

If West Ham and Boro are the calibre of opposition we need to worry about, we are the real deal.

Stars all over the pitch, well done Nige.

I'm off to a meal out in Waterlooville where the tumbleweed will be blowing around the streets as they try to ignore the league table.

Another happy day.

I love football.

And well done to the Kingsland, great noise today, especially the excitable little group in ties that looked like they had never been allowed out before let alone to a big game - top marks for enthusiasm! :)

I live in Waterlooville and work there, I'm certainly not ignoring the league table! (though I'm not exactly shouting about it in order to avoid being stabbed :))

That was chuffin' brilliant. Completely dominated 'boro ro most of the match. Gutted Guly didn't get the hatrick, an inch to the right & he'd have had one in about 35 minutes. The third goal was awesome, a propper team goal, Boro didn't touch the ball for about 5 minutes & what a lay-off from Rickie. We've now beaten the 2nd & 3rd teams playing well on both ocassions. Good times.

Chappers motm for me (again).

I can only echo what many others have already said - we were more than decent today, and to be frank we made Boro' look like a team placed a league below us rather than a mere two or three places. More than that every department of the team put in a good performance, we defended better, our midfield was dominant, and our strikers much sharper than the opposition. From a whole host of good performances I'll pick out Richard Chaplow for special attention - he was superb and that bald head was everywhere. The forum member who said on here that he could be the new Chris Marsden was spot on.

This game was almost embarrassingly easy for us at times, and when the crowd started chanting "we're taking the p1ss, we're taking the p1ss" I was forced to agree. Now if we can only sort out our rather less impressive away form then we're going to take some stopping I reckon.

Thought it would be much harder than it looked , i rushed home to catch the 2nd half on French tv , i felt Saints won comfortably and didn't need to go into top gear even , great Third goal ,for me Chaplow MOM on the second half performance ....

It was almost easy today. Boro never got going and we outplayed them on every level. Chaplow is really back to the player he was five or six years ago, when he was touted as a future England player, but they were all good today & hard to find fault with anyone. We just look so good when it is going our way - unplayable. I love it.

Boro had pace up front, one or decent footballers in middle, but that was about it, we bullied them up top, restricted them to channel balls and quite frankly I don't see them as a threat for the title at all. Far far too lightweight at centre half and down the middle. We, on the other hand look like title contenders and we on a different level. I still have yet to see a better side than us, if we can keep our intensity and confidence then this ball is just going to keep rolling.

Davis 6 some great sweeping otherwise we might have had a spot of bother, palmed away a few relatively easy long strikes, safety first I suppose, one poor kick when under no pressure, one poor kick when under pressure. Perhaps the defenders out to handle a few more balls rather than passing backwards so often - they clearly trust him more than the fella sat next to me.

Butterfield 7 legs have gone but you wouldn't know it from this performance, immaculate positioning and choice making. Prefer Richardson every time, but on this display I'm extremely thankful he is our back up.

Fonte 7 the pace of Emnes meant he didn't have the opportunity to dive in and because of that he looked much more solid than recent weeks. Kept his defending simple and that's what we need more of.

Jos 10 didn't put a foot wrong. One wonderful diagonal pass showed Fox how it is done. Strong in the air and didn't give the strikers a yard all game. Best game in a Saints shirt.

Fox 7 just one hollywood ball all game, which was crap, but strong and fiesty and solid again. Improving ever game. Very good first touch indeed, just needs to pass it short to Lallana more often. Harding isn't going to shift him soon.

Cork 7 much better than last week, but not quite at his best. His touch and decision making were not as good as earlier in the seasonn, but he is busy and he worked hard as usual.

Hammond 7 strong display again and bossed the middle when we played through it, although there was a lot more direct stuff this week which worked well. Composed and touch spot on.

Chaplow 10 another outstanding all action display. What more could you ask of a midfielder? Every blade on the pitch covered and broke up the play time after time. Composed on the ball and didn't give it away either. Absolute top of his game right now.

Lallana 7 first touch immaculate and that makes all the difference at this level, he just never gives it away and that means we keep the ball and we get the ball into dangerous areas. Brilliant crossing. Looked knackered after 5 minutes but got second wind and did very well in the first half. Tired as you'd expect and didn't see a lot of the ball second half.

Lambert 9 Bullied their centre backs and won everything in the air. A few duff passes/controls but considering how involved he was in everything you'd have to expect a mis placed pass now and then. Brilliant showing.

Guly 8 great headed goal, but decent display to go with it. Much much more dangerous than Connelly has been. Strong in the air and linked the play well. Thought we struggled when he went off.

Morgan usual careful touch and passing

Connelly well of the pace when he came on, but got in the right area for his goal and nice finish

de Ridder full of running and looked a threat

It was odd really. After Reading showed what can be achieved by pressing us and closing us down, Boro didn't bother. To say this result was all down to Saints and nothing to do with a below par Boro display is foolhardy. We did well but were rarely pressured when in possession.

I cannot praise Adkins enough, he just gets better and better. I have always liked Adkins and he was my first choice amongst the practical targets. Over time I have seen several holes in his tactics, but he keeps getting there eventually until we see this master class laid out before us today. I always thought his brand of football was superior to Pardew but without the champagne, with that quickly being dispelled from the end of last season and just going on to new levels this.

The team and formation used today has always been in the back of my mind as being the one which would be the most solid defensively with plenty of attacking options. Guly able to contribute effectively without losing the ball in dangerous positions. With Lallana back the champagne was flowing again, but I still believe we would have been solid without him, but how dominant? What I struggled to understand was why Adkins chooses this formation of players with Lallana in the team, something I don't recall previously from the start. Then seeing the dominance Saints had in midfield and the space afforded to them, I believe this was a direct result of Middlesbrough's 352 and the whole thing worked like a dream. I get the feeling Middlesbrough were expecting something different, because they just could not figure out how to defend with what was going on around them.

Watched this one on tv but it looked very similar to Leeds on the opening day. As some Leeds fans said to me, "you were good, but we were sheite", nigh on same from Middlesbrough. But when Saints get a grip of that midfield they strangle all opportunity and invention from the opposition that they do look sheite. Add to that a back five which have been rebarred over the last few weeks, there was just no chinks left open today with a hard working midfield. Throw in the champagne from the forwards and you have what you saw today, a masterclass from Adkins. To our credit we do this without having to kick lumps out of the opposition but by playing passing football.

Just when is this home run of wins going to end? I thought that it might well have been today, as Middlesborough are a decent team with an intelligent manager in Mowbray and they like to play decent football. The game against West Ham was tight, so it was a reasonable position to believe that this game would be difficult also. But it wasn't.

Instead, it was one of the best performances of the season so far, made even better because of the calibre of the opposition. The match statistics would make interesting reading; they hardly worried our defence at all, whereas we could have had at least another couple of goals. Fonte had a brace of free headers, Guly was a fraction away from his hat-trick and it might even have been down to the cross wind that his teasing shot just trickled inches wide. Lambert had a diving header that went parallel to the right hand post, but just the wrong side, so again, inches in it.

With a team like the one that played today, who do Middlesborough mark? They can try and mark the two front men, Lambert and Guly, but couldn't cover for Chaplow marauding into their box, or the trickery of Lallana. Perhaps his return and the switch to playing Guly up front were the difference today. The combination of skillful players, allied to the sheer effort and grittiness of our display was simply too much for Middlesborough. But surely it would also have been too much for any other team in this division and quite possibly a few Premiership teams at the foot of the table too.

Chaplow and Hammond epitomised that sheer endeavour in the centre and as a result, virtually all of the 50/50 balls fell to us. Discussing it with others around me, I wondered who the last player was to wear the red and white and show the grit and constant industry that Chaplow did today. What a diamond he is proving to be and £50,000 looks to be the bargain bit of business in this entire division. Chaplow was man of the match IMO, regardless of the two goals from Guly and his superb performance.

Was there a weak performance from any Saints player today? Not any that I saw. The defence was magnificent, all four of them. Kelvin wasn't much troubled, as the few shots they had on target were all straight at him. We were playing the team with the meanest away defence in the division, only three goals having been scored against them so far this season. Well, we doubled that deficit and increased our goal difference with our clean sheet.

Tactically, Adkins got it spot-on IMO. The team sheet to start with was certainly causing Middlesborough problems, but the substitutions also looked very effective. Connoly brought something different to Guly and it was good to see him on the score sheet again. A player of his calibre doesn't loose it overnight and he took his goal well. Apparently there were about 25 passes that proceeded it and it was great to see the patient build-up, followed by the coup-de-grace. When the third goal went in, it produced chants of "we're taking the p*ss" which must have been very discouraging to the Middlesborough fans already streaming towards the exits, a very long journey ahead of them in which to contemplate how we had totally outplayed them.

As for the other aspects of the game, the crowd was superb, in great voice. In particular, there was good banter between the Northam and the Kingsland corner. The refereeing I thought was excellent. He really let the game flow and it was generally a clean but well fought game.

It would increasingly be easy to feel blase about playing Peterborough on Tuesday expecting to turn them over too, but I don't think that Adkins allows the team to become complacent. It must however be a difficult thing to achieve though, to make them confident in their ability on the one hand and yet not too cocky on the other.

Exactly. I mean Derby only had 24,000 at their game today. The Bestest Fans in the World surely would have taken 5,000 at least to that game so just goes to show where the true support is!!

...and what a game that was! Which reminds me - I think I'll go for 4 - 3 in the prediction league.

All very good but it's the full time score, not the Half Time Score that counts!!!

It could well be the highest scoring match at SMS yet.

6-3 anyone, just to let Fergie Junior know how his dad felt?

An excellent performance. I don't know if its us playing well or the oppossition being poor, but I genuinely haven't really seen a decent opposing side so far this year. The league is there for the taking.

Today's performances reminded me of how we played at teh start of the year, I had feared we'd lost some of that momentum, as we had been struggling of late, but today was good.

Davis had a good game and was worked a fair bit, did everything he needed to well.

Hooiveld was excellent yet again, sign him up.

The two things that really made the difference though were 1) The obviouse, the return of Lallana. Box of tricks that makes things happen for us and pulls defences open. 2) The return of the central midfield partnership of COrk and Hammond working well again as it had at the start of the season, ticking us over, winnining the ball, then keeping possession, constantly being available for their team mates.

Chaplow was my MOTM for sheer work rate alone, but top performances from Guly and Lambert.

I like a moan, but really can't complain with the points wie've earnt from this tough run of games through October.

It's entirely possible that other players than Chaplow are more responsible for making the team tick, but what Chaplow does is easy for the spectator to understand and hopefully it rubs off on his team mates. My MotM too as his workrate is just immense...

Sounds like a great performance today, Just wish they'd show the whole move for the 3rd goal. It was a great piece of creativity from Lambert & good movement from Connolly to get the space & a cracking finish into the corner. I hope they show it in its full glory on the football league show tonight.

The season gets better & better, that little run of difficult games against top opposition has given us a very decent return. We've beaten 2nd & 3rd at home drawn away at Derby when 3rd & salvaged a draw in difficult circumstances at a fast improving Reading. Well done NA & the team keep it up. lets hope we can capitalize over the next few weeks.

That was a cracking win. We bossed the game from start to finish against a decent side.

Fair play to Butterfield. I thought he was pretty poor on Tuesday but today he played well and put in a sublime cross for the first goal. The whole defence was superb in fact. We won so many challenges before they got near our box that it meant Kelvin had a pretty easy afternoon.

Guly is so much better in the middle. Lambert was excellent even though for some reason he misplaced a few of the easier passes he had to make. Chaplow was just everywhere and immense again. A complete steal for £50k. Great to see Lallana back, he makes us such a better team.

Can't wait to see the 3rd goal again. It was a work of beauty.

that was rather good ! ;)

thought it would be a lot closer than that but we just blew them away. if only Guly had got that 3rd it would have been the icing on the cake.

the 3rd goal & the build up was stunning. as Ricky strolled into the box i found myself having a man-love moment with the old geezer next to me!

luckily i remembered to turn round & celebrate with my son before it got too awkward .

" WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON & WERE TAKING THE P*SS !! "

long may we continue to !

Another terrific win against a side who had before today conceded only 3 goals away from home. [Rickies magnificent volley, and Jason Steeles equally magnificent save

were as good as it gets.] Like everyone to a man on the forum has already said,Richard Chaplow, was absolutely everywhere and was the man of the match by a country mile.

I also think on his first half showing, that Guly should play up front with Rickie,he definately has the skill and touch to play there.

I am going to wake up in a pool of ice cold water soon as I get woken up from a very deep slumber and the most surreal dream I am having about Saints playing some sublime football.

Something I enjoy is the fact that we have a bench that continues the relentlessness of our play.

Bloke walking out summed things up nicely " how nice it is not having to turn the paper upside down to make us look better"

Have to mention Connolly's movement for the third goal. After a superb series of passes the ball reached Lambert who did brilliantly but without Connolly's movement I doubt there'd have been an opening. If you watch a replay of the goal he shows what an intelligent player he is by getting himself in position to receive the pass rather than standing still which is what many strikers do. Once he'd taken up that clever position he left himself with a relatively simple finish. Shame he isn't ten years younger but still a very useful guy to have around and others can certainly learn from him.

Cheers for that.

Two observations:

Much preferred the first half commentary, my French isn't as bad as I thought and there's something about Sousampton and Lombbert that I like.

Also enjoyed Chaplow running off in to space at the end of the game. very apt considering he had been end to end all game.

A great showing of the match on the League show too, with much praise from Claridge. Chaplow in particular highlighted as being instrumental the last few games. Claridge commented that having watched him several times last season, he was nothing special, but the difference in him this season makes him almost appear to be a different player.

How much of this is down to Adkins' encouragement, I wonder?

Everyone was great this team are the dogs b ollocks at home almost impossible to come up with a MOTM. Boro very average. Guly has to play up front so much better there. Butters was great. Chappers is amazing don't know what they're putting in his pre-game meal but it's working. Shame Lambert didn't get on the score sheet with that effort at the end. Happy days.

It's not just Chaplow tho is it?

Look at the improvement in Kelvin over the last 12 months, in Hammond, in Lambert, and indeed in Chaplow, and in others as well.

Adkins is just ticking all the boxes: the players are fit, they want to play, they want to play for each other and they want to play for Saints!

NA has clearly set out the vision and equally clearly all the players are buying into it; once you have that you can start winning games of football, and NA has shown he has the nouse for us to consistently do that.

What are the odds on us going unbeaten at home all season?

We have beaten W Ham, Midds, Leeds, Millwall, Brum .... and to be honest none of those have got near us..... what's left? Cardiff? Seaweed? Hull? Palace? Pomski? Reading? Derby?Ipswich?... can you see us losing a home game on this form? ... I can't!
