Sun apology to mcmenemy and cortese

Statement in today's sun apologising to lawrie after last month's interview with cortese in which he discussed his efforts to weed out a culture of freebies at the club. Lawrie upset that the sun implied he was one of the hangers on after complimentary tickets. Lawrie has no issue with the club. Not the first time the sun has got it wrong or the first time people have bundled on the bandwagon yet the heat the story generated last month suggests people treat this stuff like the oracle. Not surprised cortese stays out and can't be ar$ed to put the record straight.

What did they say? Sorry, we lied about Cortese saying he's one of the ones looking for freebies? No apology to Cortese himself for playing with his words?

no outright apology to cortese; just an admission that they put words in his mouth.

So have the sun said in their apology that Cortese didn't say "all these people wanting freebies here, freebies there" then? And does it mention Le Tiss or just Lawrie?

If they haven't then who was Cortese talking about?

And the thread at the time was full of plenty laying into "nothing but employees" Lawrie Mac and Matt Le Tiss. Will those people apologise as it turns out it wasn't them he meant?

FOLLOWING an approach from former Southampton manager Lawrie McMenemy, The Sun is happy to clarify the following misunderstanding.

In a recent interview with Nicola Cortese, we reported how the Southampton chairman was determined to stamp out a culture of freebies at the club, and in particular an expectancy from some former staff to receive complimentary match tickets.

Regrettably, we incorrectly assumed Mr Cortese was referring to Mr McMenemy.

We are happy to confirm Mr Cortese did not refer to him at all and we apologise for any embarrassment our mistake may have caused.

People should stop inferring Cortese is this that or the other based upon hearsay and tittle tattle. Just leave it.

Much shorter thread this one, isn't it? Controversy and outrage get people talking and sell papers. The number of people suckered into the basic model The Sun and other tabloids work upon is consistently amusing (albeit scary). Not to mention the fact that the original argument on here was petty at best.

Let's hope there's no dividing the club as it stands. Onwards and upwards, together as one ;)

I think he was probably referring to the relative nobodies who used to get freebies and the general freebie culture. I managed to get one once (and I'm a relative nobody!) through a mate of a mate of a cousin who used to work at the club (in an admin capacity I think). On that basis, Cortese probably had a valid point!

I'm half tempted to sticky it.

Agree with this - the head of security managed to get 50 free tickets for a Leeds game in the CCC once, which he then sold on regardless of club allegiance.

Totally with you on this one, mate. Well done for standing up against such ignorance. Unfortunately it's far too commonplace

Interesting to see that the Sun has apologised but there's precious little apologies from all of those who accused Matt and Lawrie of being freeloadeers...

Even more refreshing to see Cortese actively chasing the Sun up to correct their error...

If this is what NC is referring to then its probably right to put a stop to it. Perks are great, but it can add up and eventually damage the business. To keep the clubs' culture healthy and positive, perhaps a staff discount would be appropriate, cant see too many supporters having a problem with that.

Reading it on the train earlier, so don't have the page number but its in a box below a photo of an Ipswich player.

It is good news that prominent figures of SFC (NC + LM) are starting to make progress, one day we will all be on Niges' bus together as one.

that can't be right.......according to the moronic few on here, this was all Cortese's fault and he clearly stated that le Tiss and Lawrie were the culprits. Surely they were right and Cortese is the devil incarnate?

Also the moronic few who accused Lawrie and Le Tiss of trying to get freebies from the club.

I didn't poit it out at the time but I know where Cortese is coming from.

A little analogy from my own experience:

When I joined my current firm, there was a little social event called 'The Friday Night Club' which my new collegues got together after work on a Friday to have a few drinks and a curry on occasion. As it is in Reading, near where most of them lived, I never really partook, as I would only be able to have one drink and then would have to drive home to Southampton. Anyway a large number of them left the company but it still continued. Anyway, we had a large job that went on for 3 years which the last remaining few were on. They had a big Xmas party, which this job paid for, of which 10 people went. Of the ten, only two of them worked for us. They came to a few leaving do's, took part in a golf day, made up half the team for a raft race, popped into the office when they were passing, drunk my coffee, eat my biscuits, two of them helped themselves to 20 of my sleepers. In essence, these people that I only knew for a short time still acted like they owned the place and just helped themselves. So, unfortunatly, I totally agree with Cortese and know where he is coming from, even if he isn't throwing the insult directly to Lawrie and Matt, it is easy to become ****ed off and generalise.

If you often get referred to as a Spastic then you are clearly aware that it HAS been used in recent years........
