Football Manager 2012 - updates thread

I got promoted at my first season with Saints. Now I'm stuck 12 points adrift at the foot of the Premiership with only 15 games to go. Any handy hints to pull of a great escape?

(Bare in mind I bought this game a couple of weeks ago and is the first time I've played FM for many years!)

Have a look at what role you are employing your players in. I'll take Chaplow and Lambert as examples.

On the Information page of their profiles, at the bottom it will say something like "box-to-box midifelder" or "target man" (RC and RL)

when going onto the tactics page (with the pitch on right showing formation and players on left) have a look at what it says at their chosen position

e.g. Lambert will be upfront on your tactics page (I presume!) and it should have a box where you'll have a choice of: Poacher, Complete Forward, Target Man etc..

selcet the one that matches up with their profile...they play a lot better.

Just finished my first season with Eastleigh, won the league (over 20 points ahead) and won the FA Trophy! Now my board are building a £3M stadium :)
Just played first game of the second season after a pretty painful pre-season, I let all of my staff go bar one scout as they were sh*te and bought in a much better team so now my training is at least 3 stars on everything. I also got rid of 7 players who were only just scraping their way into the first team. I thought signing players in the next league up would be easier but it was in fact a lot harder, with most southampton players refusing to come on loan to me initially (although Forte, butters, dickson and barnard signed up on 3 month spells in the end!) I also signed a lot of young players and a couple of older ones including Francis "FA Cup ears" Jeffers and a bloke from AFC Wimbledon who has amazing leadership skills so is my new captain, but I still have some big gaps in my team that need filling.

I drew my first game 2-2 at home to Hereford after going ahead 2-0 (albeit from a penalty that even I could tell shouldn't of stood and a cross bouncing off a players leg) but their equalizer on 88 mins hurt, still looks like I won't be struggling as much as I feared this season!

Report the bug on the forums in the correct place and help get it fixed then.

Nah!! I gave up, took the whole thing of my computer. I will refuse to buy it again (and I've had every one to date), until the reliance on steam is broken. Just my take on it, mind.

I've had FM2012 on my iPhone for a while but I just can't get on with it. For starters I think they've got us and Poopey confused when it comes to cash flow because when you start the game you're already 100K pw over the wages budget and have only got like £300K cash! Ok maybe a bit better than Poopey but still where's all the Chamberlain moolah?

And then it's just too difficult to do well! In FM2011 on the iPhone there was one formation that I could win every game really easily. That's what I want! I don't want to keep losing games and ending up mid-table in a boring realistic fashion. Where's the fun in that? I suppose it's probably realistic but I enjoy it far more when I win every game like 10-0. I've tried everything, even going to the trouble of actually picking my own team rather than letting the assistant manager do it which takes ages but I'm still not doing that well.

Anyone got any tips? I'm looking for a formation which lets me win every game 10-0 no matter how sh!t my players are! Someone said playing a 5-1-1-3 formation worked well but it's not happening for me!

Started up a game with Scotland, took them from second bottom in the Euro qualifying tables to second top, finishing comfortably ahead of the Czech Republic. Unfortunately our Euro group was Portugal, Germany and Ukraine and we got absolutely smashed, our only point came from a 2-2 draw against Germany (after being 2-0 down at HT). Ukraine went onto the final and Portugal in the Semis so not too upset to get knocked out by teams like that. Going into 2013 we're top of our World Cup qualifying group, Belgium are in second. Croatia and Serbia are lagging behind quite badly, Wales and Macedonia propping up the group.

Anyone else had this problem -

In 2014 the MLS stopped. Had the league running with a few others, didn't delete any, it's still listed. Got an MLS job in 2015, waited for fixtures. Waited longer. Then checked and there were none, for any MLS teams. Managing international too, but now in 2017, not played any games and the MLS records stop at 2014. There is no MLS! Yet the teams still sign players and have the draft, for no reason it seems.

Sounds like a prediction by Sports Interactive.

Finally found my feet on FM2012 iPhone! Playing with Saints I won the Championship, Premier League and Champions League in consecutive seasons and am now completely dominating eveything.

Not many of the current team survive though, only Jack Stephens is a first choice starter though Jack Cork and Danny Fox (of all people) still get the occasional game.

Turns out there's a particular tactics that works really well, I'll post it up if anyone's interested!

Release the tactics, Bearsy ( you see that now ).

I have to say, I'd prefer a cut-down version of Football Manager in which you play no games at all, pick no teams and sign no players. The 'game' would simply be reading a series of platitudes telling you what a great management hero you are.

In this time-poor age, it could be a winner.

Good man Pap! Glad we're friends again after I tore a massive strip off you yesterday but I hope you appreciate you deserved it for your continual aggressive misspelling and disrespect.

What you want to do is pick a 4-1-2-1-2 and set your player roles as:

GK

WBK CTR CTR WBK

BWM

BBM CM

APM

DLF PCR

Then you want to set your team instructions:

Mentality: Attacking

Passing: Short

Tackling: Normal

Pressing: On

Offside Trap: On

Counter Attack: Off

Men behind ball: Off

If you can be bothered you also want to put pretty much all your training on intensive, and just lay off pussies like Connolly when they start b!tching about it.

I never play the full game because as you say its a lot less bother if you let the assistant manager do all the work and just swan about enjoying the glory. I think this is pretty much how Redknapp works actually!

Very much so. I count myself lucky that I don't try such despicable vowel-insertion tricks on the UI. I fear this would have been an "ironing out" offence there.

How do you set player roles on the iPhone version?

....so yah, PSV. Was fun for a while, finished 3rd and sold 2-3 of the clubs star players in the close season, replacing them with potential. Dodgy start to the new season, lost interest.

Now I'm embarking on Portsmouth from March 3rd 2011, this year... all league tables updated, all debts accounted for and points deduction in place. Now I'm going to do what the Skates should have done... cull the high earners and play the youth! L1 beckons.

Interesting challenge though.

Trator! ;)

If you don't get them into the blue square you've failed!

I've started a new game myself, back to Southampton and I'm doing absolutely rubbish in the championship. We've just lost 10 in a row after getting near the top 2. Now we're in the bottom 6. Excellent.

Signed Jay Rod but he hasn't scored all season. I think I might start a new game as I've broken this team.

Just seen your screenie in the Pompey thread too....what theme are you using, and what image pack? I've not got any packs for 2012 yet - haven't been able to find any decent ones.

It's too much fun to completely destroy Pompey to ever take control of them seriously.

An interesting challenge is trying to get Man City into administration. I managed to get contracts organised for some players so that they ended up on well over £1million with % rises etc!

Been bored with the game since about Christmas, I prefer the game when you're a good few years in and looking for regens. The best part of the game for me is pre-season when you're building a side.

With that in mind, I'm going to go on holiday for ten years and come back and see what's what. I'll post my findings of the game in 2021 when I've loaded it all...

Got Eastleigh into the Championship. Expanding the Eastleigh Stadium to 8000 seater so im currently playing in Fareham until Xmas! I have a weekly budget of 45k and its impossible to sign anyone as the max i can pay out is 2k a week.

Have had to search non league and leagues 1 and 2 for players as any ex prem players want big bucks. Hoping my budget will increase once the 3000 new seats are installed and im back at home.

Anyone else taken a BSS team up to the prem, need someone who will expand the stadium by enough so you get a reasonable budget?

So I finally got the ten seasons thing done.

Newcastle are in League One under the management of Kevin Davies. In 2017, Saints were in the Prem but relegated with 33 points under... Darius Vassell, who chose to release Rickie at the age of 32. Colombia are world champions having beaten Brazil on penalties in 2014 World Cup. There have been four or five different English champions, United, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea.

To cut a long story short, realism, hello? WHERE DID YOU GO?

Haha, that's awesome in a way, but unless I'm immersed in the game I'd find it hard to play it with the likes of Vassell as a manager etc.

It's funny you should mention realism as I was offered a job as a tester in 2010 for the football manager series. Evidently, my location totally ruled me out of taking the opportunity but I did learn some interesting things during my "test" and the subsequent chat afterwards. Alot of the testing is realism-based, meaning you'd play the game during the day as you would normally (what a job!) and then leave it on holiday before you left work. Upon returning in the morning, you'd then have to go through the previous nights' processing and weed out all the unrealistic bugs, whether they were minor or major. For example, would Newcastle be in League One in 5 years time It's not totally unrealistic but it's unlikely. Would Darius Vassell become a manager? He's never struck me as the type, so I'd doubt it - though like anything, it's not totally inconceivable.

In theory then, with that amount of testing/debugging, the game should evolve and become more realistic as time goes on... but we'll see! I mean, it's not all fantasy-stuff. I'm Portsmouth at the moment and I've just been taken over by a Bulgarian businessman who is building a new training ground and academy, cleared the debts and told me to go spend, spend, spend. Y'see? Real. Very real. ;)

I was AFC Wimbledon's researcher and did all their work ahead of their solitary season in the Conference South. From what I gather, in the game they often won the division and did okay in the Conference. Just like in real life! I guess I was a good researcher... ;)

AFC Wimbledon were unstoppable in FM2010, but then again the club are set up to be of League 1/2 standard - which is where they were within 5 years on my game (I wasn't managing them).

Sorry to say it but you're probably just not a very good manager delldays. You probably don't know how to motivate your squad, or make subtle adjustments in the course of a game to achieve superior results like we do.

We are all champions league winners, sought after managers with world class reputations. We're Jose Mourinho. You're John Barnes.

Here's what I use. Just did a season with Bath City, promoted with a record of P46 W40 D4 L2.

Here's what you can do using the existing Norwich squad

I have just started as a lower league manager, taking the helm as Eastleigh manager.

So far, so good, although some would consider my strategy somewhat dodgy. There is a small French colony called Reunion, who happen to have a lot of very good players for lower league sides. Many will join Blue Square Bet South Sides.

Going alright so far - using the tactics posted above ( Minimal Fuss ) - although I'm picking up a lot of fines for disciplinary problems. £500! That's a tenth of my transfer budget!

Yes, I have to say I adjusted the tackling on it.

By the way, I always look for these stats above any:

Creativity

Decisions

Determination

Technique

Concentration

Team Work

Work Rate

Anticipation

If I'm in the Conference I want at least 5 in all these. League Two = 8, League One = 10, Championship = 12, Premier League = 15.

Those are the main stats that affect what a player does in a game according to a very good guide I read called 'Mantralux'. The only thing I would say is that decisions don't matter on anyone but defence minded players, creativity isn't hugely important for defenders at the same time.

Once I've got those eight stats down, I'm looking for whatever applies to the position. For example a striker has to have good composure, finishing etc etc. I ALWAYS start from those eight.

The Australian and Japanese thing didn't work, the game freezes whenever I'm creating a game using the imported Japanese database file. Annoying.

Using Reunion players in the lower leagues is virtually cheating ;)

Lots of good English players on frees you can pick up and still do about the same.
