pap Posted 27 October, 2011 Posted 27 October, 2011 Listening to 6'o'clock news on Radio 4. Apparently, the Government is looking to introduce mandatory life sentences for anyone who is convicted of a sexual or violent offence for a second time. Good deterrent?
Saint_clark Posted 27 October, 2011 Posted 27 October, 2011 As a rule, or dependant on individual cases? Seems a tad unfair that someone can get a little too drunk once in a while and get in a scrap - and spend their life in prison for it. Sounds ridiculous to me. Far too close to the U.S way of thinking.
aintforever Posted 27 October, 2011 Posted 27 October, 2011 Good idea, as long as it's two serious offences.

It's a step in the right direction but not as good as castration
Wade Garrett Posted 27 October, 2011 Posted 27 October, 2011 They should make a start by keeping offenders in prison for the whole of their sentences. This latest idea doesn't sound like it's been thought through very well. Something we should be used to by now with the dithering coalition.

Using your squiffy pugilist as an example, he would get a life sentence for getting convicted for two 'scraps' (e.g. whatever form of violent assault you're euphemising ). The question is, would he be as slap-happy after his Skol if he knew his life could be at stake?
dubai_phil Posted 27 October, 2011 Posted 27 October, 2011 Not needed. 1st offence - save money ship them to Saudi Arabia to work as taxi drivers in some convoluted Aid Programme. 3 days over there they will NEVER want to go back for a second offence
