JRM Posted 28 October, 2011 Share Posted 28 October, 2011 And it's not just the ticket price, it's the booking fee's/matchday premiums/non delivery of pompey coach passes (despite charging a booking fee)/charging people to park while visiting the club shop. It would not surprise me if the bubble game wasn't pushed for by the club purely to force fans to pay 12 quid each to use a coach. i wonder what the policy on parking at st marys is going to be that day? £10 a car? shurlock Posted 28 October, 2011 Share Posted 28 October, 2011 i completely disagree with that, there are travel options that we use, Megatrain for a £1 each way, coaches, away games we do book up 12 weeks in advance, those who use the away forum will know myself and others i know are well ahead on that for deals, some Fulham i know get a car load together for some away games up north to share the cost, 5 in a car and split the petrol, the one thing everyone feels is a p*ss take is the ticket prices, clubs have taken the p*ss for years now, bumping up prices year in year out , Chelsea away for Arsenal tomorrow is going to be £65 for a ticket, how can fans "never had it so good" when being charged that???!!! Don't disagree about the premiership - those prices take the pi $$. But that's another galaxy - the problem hasn't spread to the championship yet and Leeds are largely the exception. I do my homework for away games or let London Saints do it for me (though I've never taken a megatrain) - yet the fares are still a racket. Its only because trains are outside the football world and that people in theory have other options, however remote they are in reality- that trains get an easier time. Partly its the habit of traveling in Europe and the US where fares are really cheap and realising that we're being taken for a ride over here (excuse the pun). £25 for a L1 game is on the dear side; but we're only talking a few quid over what many tickets cost which is a drip in the ocean when you tally up what an average away day costs. Ummm. No. Especially as it also applies for the skates coming to SMS and I'm quite sure that Saints aren't profiting from those coaches. Hants OB insisted and it was more because it's harder to get the skates from the station to SMS and our willingness to get amongst it than our safety at theirs. The decision was made after the cup game and Hants OB went to the Cardiff/Swansea games last season to see it in action. By B-I-L is a rozzer in Bitterne nick and he filled me in with the details. It might be a bit OTT, but I wonder what premium the coach companies are charging that day (I don't think National Express have to pay their drivers a premium for driving to Portsmuff, nor are their coaches brick magnets!!!). I would like to think that the Club aren't ripping us off and would also be "nice" regarding parking at SMS on the day. Would also like an answer as to whether tickets will be available to non season ticket holders as would like to go with a couple of mates. I have no problem maximising income, but at the same time there has to be a balance. This is not a "normal" business and this specific occasion is not normal for a not normal business!!!! I remember when people were first charged for parking at SMS when going to away games and I never felt comfortable with it. Of course one argument is well if they want to park there then they should pay, but surely the other one is we should be encouraging away support (even if it gives us 1% extra on the pitch), not penalising people for supporting the team. It just seemed to be looking at things solely from a simplistic, commercial viewpoint (if you don't like it, then don't come) as opposed to a more empathetic view. More to do with the stature of the clubs in it than anything else. If you lived in the real world you'd know that plenty of people are priced out and that will continue to climb as money gets tighter and the amount of money clubs are making per person is dropping. Full paying adults are being replaced with kids for a £ and the such like. The fact that tickets at OT now go on general sale and you can get a season ticket at a 50% reduction at Newcastle speaks volumes. Even Wolves are re-evaluating their stadium expansion due to the drop in crowds, WBA struggle to sell out despite canny pricing. Villa can't give tickets away and Stoke and giving 100s of tickets away for the lesser games.

John Boy Saint Posted 29 October, 2011 Share Posted 29 October, 2011 I always thought most of those guys grew up in houses where Pa-pa was a fully paid up union man down the docks, who would prefer to argue about ways to make the company being better, rather than actually doing some work: then at the first opportunity walking out on strike. But when the dock companies dug their heals in and bit back, these then trained and groomed union youth next generation had their opportunity to continue the family trade ripped from them before they could really start. So the likes of Askham & Lowe dicking around with the club became the perfect vent for all this pent up ire. Cripes it must really puddle their brains now to have had the opportunity for confrontation ripped away from them again, especially as we are now a football club run on an even keel with Billionaire backing, and from where I sit in the stands, what seems a sound rational to keep things going in a forwards direction. david in sweden Posted 29 October, 2011 Share Posted 29 October, 2011 the radio discussion was based around "do fans have it better now than ever" not specifically saints, but football fans, and my comment is valid as such, have loads of mates who go regualrly, most of them London / home counties based fans of London clubs and the one thing we all have in common is disgust at the prices clubs get away with charging, we generally all still go as we love our football, but have all cut back, i see lads who used to do every spurs game home and away just getting season tickets now, fed up at being charged £55 to get to places like Fulham and West Ham, and QPR charging up to £65 this year, it's disgusting. Leeds recently moved the away fans at Elland Road from a corner to the side stand for no other reason than they can charge more for the tickets, £36 for Leeds away this year, £19 for kids!! you've got to be f8cking joking so that is one i'll be giving a miss to. So bear that in mind from your desk in Sweden, that decent lads who have grown up following their clubs are now missing games by being priced out, maybe today's football fans don't have it so good after all........ Obviously some people have taken part of what you said out of context (a common problem we all suffer from) and it has been blown out of proportion. As a lad (in the early 1960's) much of my pocket money, and later a chunk of my miserable wage early wage packet went to following Saints and although quoting £££ figures cannot be compared nowadays - a good figure is always the % cost of your net income. For me and my friends of that period it was no small investment, even walking to the Dell... and buying a (then) programme, but we did it anyway. I totally agree about the relative costs that some away clubs charge, as I well recall on my first visit to Highbury (the old Arsenal stadium - as was).. BR train fares, and Tube tickets, too and then a quite expensive programme that wasn't a patch of the Saints model of the day. AT least my visit to Highbury produced a VERY rare win against Arsenal, so we came away happy and despite the cost, felt we had got our money's worth. Many other times it wasn't so. Instead of moaning maybe stop smoking, stuffing overpriced grease in your faces, boozing, gambling and make a choice based on your circumstances. If sacrifices are necessary, so be it.
