OOh er missus you must still have a hangover from last night! Just it was bloody obvious if you were at the game or watched it! Touchy touchy I don't need to keep my post count up and don't need to call my fellow Saints fan w*nkers too thanks!

Here we go!!

Go back to last season and this has been a common feature, with the odd blip per game. It's just that last season it was buried under problems with the rest of the defenders. I thought at the time he was doing too much and trying to cover for others. But he just gets himself out of position now and again and panic sets in to rectify the problem. He still puts in good performances even with that little foible, but because the rest of defence have tightened up it has become more noticeable. I would not drop him and believe he has a lot to add to the team, but you have to be blind not to see what is going on.

I thought it was probably a precaution as he was on a yellow card.

Nigel Adkins' interview with the BBC explains it all.

Fonte was feeling his hamstring, hee didn't feel he could sprint and so was dropping too deep, only felt like he was at 70%, no point in him pulling a hamstring and being out for 6 weeks.

Sometimes after however many years I don't think fans comprehend the concept of form. Players do well for ages, show what they can do, then as soon as they have a bad spell, they're not good enough. It's not just Saints fans, you hear it every week, especially with managers. It works both ways too. you hear Wolves and Bolton fans saying they're rubbish and going down, yet it's October and bad runs come any time. You hear idiot Geordies wondering if they can make the top 4, but it's early days and lower mid table is still fine for them. More crazy, you hear Forest fans that didn't want Cotterill say he's great after 2 games and has turned it round. Why is it you can't write off a manager after 2 games, but apparently you can say they're good? Sometimes it's the change that gets a reaction, but it doesn't make it a good long term change. It can even just be a bad run of fixtures that screws it up for a while.

But with Fonte, he's getting used to a new partnership, playing in a very attacking team and is coming up against some very good strikers. He won't be as consistent as L1 where he could boss every defender, but it doesn't make him anything less than a huge asset to the team. Same way good top flight teams get turned over and have good defenders embarrassed sometimes.

Judge him in May, and I'm sure once again Jose will have had a good season.

What he said.

Yep. I thought we were bottom of the table and going down reading the post match threads yesterday. Good teams lose games....and sometimes they even draw them with 10 men when not bang on form.

Right, so just to confirm fans can't highlight that a player's form has dropped until we've got to the end of the season? How does that work? I think Fonte has struggled a bit all season and out of current back 4, I'd say he's currently our weakest link. Even with Hooiveld here, we do still need further cover at centre back, as only having 3 fit centre backs isn't enough for a team playing the number of games we currently are.

Hows about giving those players who have been immense for us and our highly performing manager the respect and letting them sort these minor problems out before jumping on their backs.
Who's jumped on Fonte's back? He's had nothing but top support from our fans this season despite a few fairly average performances. The whole point of this forum is to discuss things like a drop in form of a key player, so stop being such a wet blanket.

Having seen the thread on Steven Davies' injury (http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?33313-Steven-Davies-injury-against-us-last-week), it would be perfectly understandable if it had disturbed JF somewhat. It would explain a) his loss of form and, b) why he has taken to challenging for high balls with his hand in the air rather than with his elbows extended.

It wouldn't really, considering he's been playing the same for pretty much all of the season and not just after the Derby game.
