saints_is_the_south Posted 23 October, 2011 Share Posted 23 October, 2011 Taking into consideration the 3 very gruelling games we've had over the past week, and the fact we have another massive game next Saturday against Boro who have a week with no game, I'd go with this: Bart Butterfield - Martin - Jos - Harding De Ridder - Schneiderlin - Cork - Holmes Forte - Guly Subs: Davis, Fox, Fonte, Richardson, Chaplow, Lambert, Reeves Cork & Morgan both only started 2 games out the 3 as opposed to Chappers who has started all 3, so I'd rest him and start those 2 in the middle. Palace will probably name a weakened side too, so I reckon the team above is definitely capable of getting a result. Good width and pace with De Ridder and Holmes on the wings, solid back 4. Only worry is up front with Forte and Guly, without Connolly and Lambert in the team and Barnard injured, it does make it very apparent that we do need another striker in January imo. The Kraken Posted 23 October, 2011 Share Posted 23 October, 2011 Hopefully NA realises that, with a few players out injured, the squad starts to look a tiny bit threadbare in places. I'd like ot see Lambert and Connolly given a rest, as well as the full backs and Chappers. I guess it'll all come down to how much the club prioritises League Cup progress against resting key players to keep them fresh for the league campaign. But certainly the likes of Butterfield, Harding and Martin need some game time, just a shame Barnard isn't fit yet as I do think we lack options up front (especially as Connolly seems incapable of playing for 90 minutes). S-Clarke Posted 23 October, 2011 Share Posted 23 October, 2011 Would expect to see Bart, Harding, Martin, Butters, De Ridder, Morgan and Forte given starts. The team could possibly be close to 11 changes from y/day, we looked so leggy yesterday at times and it's pointless wasting our first team players in this game. Let the ''backup'' lads show that they've still got something to offer this squad.
Saint_clark Posted 23 October, 2011 Share Posted 23 October, 2011 Ward-prowse was involved last round, wasn't he? Also, unless i've missed another article, pretty sure Dobles loan ran out with Bournemouth a while back. He looked good pre-season, give him a chance. S-Clarke Posted 23 October, 2011 Share Posted 23 October, 2011 Ward-prowse was involved last round, wasn't he? I think he was on the bench, along with Luke Shaw - not sure they got on the pitch though. Will be interesting to see if he's brave enough to play any of the kids at Palace, who are in incredible form at the moment.

The Cat Posted 23 October, 2011 Share Posted 23 October, 2011 De Ridder should be good for a start as he's only been used sparingly in the league so far. No offence to Forte but I hope he doesn't play up front by himself because he's not very good at holding the ball up and we lose possession too much. My Palace mate reckons they won't be anywhere near full strength so we have a good chance to progress even if we carry on resting quite a few. shurlock Posted 23 October, 2011 Share Posted 23 October, 2011 (edited) Forte on the right where he's supposedly better (according to the Scunny fans) and De Ridder up front. SDR's a more intelligent player and would arguably link up better with Guly, Lambert etc if they're playing. SuperMikey Posted 23 October, 2011 Share Posted 23 October, 2011 --------------------BART---------------------- FRAZER-----MARTIN-----HOOIVELD-----HARDING SDR--------MORGAN-----CORK--------CHAPLOW ---------------GULY-----FORTE---------------- Chaplow and Guly coming off for Lallana and Lambert for the last 30 minutes. We don't have too much depth to our squad to make wholesale changes in games like this, something we need to address in January methinks.
Lighthouse Posted 23 October, 2011 Share Posted 23 October, 2011 Guly and Forte were useless together against Swindon of all teams. They wont get a look in against a pretty decent Palace side. Neither of them can hold the ball up to save their lives. It's like having Stern John and BWP up frong again, we just give the ball away up front. Ideally we need another Lambert. Crazy Diamond Posted 24 October, 2011 Share Posted 24 October, 2011 Not sure if I want us to win this or not, so I'll think like Nigel. We want to win every game and its about the squad, not individuals. I say utilise the squad and try to win. I realise that's not much help to anyone. I'm going for a 2 - 1 loss, Palace to cause an upset against a Prem team in a semi-final leg but ultimately lose out on a place in the final. dubai_phil Posted 24 October, 2011 Share Posted 24 October, 2011 (edited) There's no way he'll do that and just give the cup tie away. We'll see a fair strong starting 11 I imagine. Probably SDR, Morgan, Harding, Martin, Bart, Holmes coming in for Connolly, Hammond, Fonte, Kelvin and Guly respectively. For support to Lambert we have SDR Guly & DC fighting for 2 places. DC & Guly looked tired and off the pace Saturday, they NEED a rest. The Boro game is WAY more important than the Palace game He also will not play 3 of his 4 main CM's - again Chaplow has been magnificent but it is about the rotation So we have a defence that means Jos has to play (again) with Martin as we have no cover, but with the FB's of Harding & Butters. But the burden on the forward players is the problem Rotation means Cork & Morgan in CM Lallana just back from a knock most likely only on the bench so the question then is about Lee Holmes. Is HE fit? IF he is then with Guly off the pace we are still short of a RM option Is Dickson back in the frame with Holmes on the left leaving SDR & Forte up front? Nige has to pick the strongest team he can for a tough cup tie BUT he cannot risk losing at home to Boro on Saturday by having MORE players having "I'm tired" days, He said words to that effect after Saturday's game. The biggest test will be whether SDR or DC starts. IF DC starts then we know SDR will play upfront on Saturday with RL No reason the bench should not be RL, AL, Chappers, Fonte & some kids The only way to play Guly is IF he can be rested Saturday the midfield actually looks short of options ATM Edited 24 October, 2011 by dubai_phil
Sour Mash Posted 24 October, 2011 Share Posted 24 October, 2011 Is Hammond suspended for tomorrow? If not, I assume he must play on the basis that he will then be missing subsequent league game and will not need the rest, plus will be keen to get the sending off out of his system asap. Centre backs will def be Martin and Hooiveld, no other choices really. Harding will be left back, needs a bit more game time and Dickson must be involved somewhere - whether you rate him or not, he's good enough to be playing much more football than he has over the last few months. What are teh chances of Lallana of getting a run out after missing a few games? Would make sense to give him another week to rest and recover. Then if Holmes and Barnard are still out injured, we're suddenly without too many other options. I guess depending on who's picked to start out of Connoly and De Ridder will give us an idea as to who won't start against 'Boro?

AussieDog Posted 24 October, 2011 Share Posted 24 October, 2011 I think this will be the game that at least a couple of unproven players get the nod. A bit worried about central defence. They won't risk Fonte if he was genuine feeling a hammy on Saturday, and I'd hate to run the risk of losing another centre back - so maybe a shock there? Can Butters play CB?? I think Morgan is a definite for midfield, but no idea on the rest, so maybe Ward-Prowse might come in. Chez Posted 24 October, 2011 Share Posted 24 October, 2011 if we win don't we have to play just before the skate game? I'll keep that as compensation should we lose. My side Bart Butterfield Martin Jos Harding de Ridder Morgan Reeve Cork Forte Guly We played five in midfield last time and I can see us doing that again. Left midfield is the problem position though with Lalalna and Holmes out. We also need to rest Chaplow really. Forte has played out there so maybe he will get the task or Dickson perhaps, who has a lot to prove after the woeful display his put in against Preston. The Guly, de Ridder, Forte combination will give Adkins flexibility to change things on the fly.

Minsk Posted 24 October, 2011 Share Posted 24 October, 2011 (edited) My guess at the starting 11 and subs (assuming Holmes is still injured): ----------------------Bart------------------- Butters-------Martin------Jos------Harding SDR---------JWP----------Cork-----Dickson --------------Forte-------Barnard------------ Subs: Dovey; Frazer; Dean; Morgan; Isgrove; Lallana; Lambert (If Barnard still not ready to play, replace with Guly - If Holmes is fit then him to start vice Dickson, who would replace Isgrove on the bench) Hmmm, if MLG is correct about Reeves starting then probably him instead of Barnard. A shame as I was really hoping Barney would be making a comeback by now. Unless, maybe, SDR AND Jonno will be the wide players and Reeves will play alongside Barney - that WOULD be interesting and would probably terrify the Palace fullbacks).
