Lets do this the Adkins way:

5 positives from the match:

1. The defence stood up very well to all the corners that Reading had. Must have been about 15 and we comfortably dealt with them all.

2. Chaplow's performance. I felt previously that he was inconsistent. One good performance would be followed by a poor one. He was my MOM against West Ham and I thought he was equally good today.

3.The spirit around the club is so good. The fans were fantastic - especially in comparison with the shockingly quiet Reading bunch. This spirit was reciprocated by the players. To come back when 1-0 down with 10 men is magnificent. The way that the players came to celebrate with the fans once SDR had scored was superb.

4. Our fitness. We may have started slowly but we finished the stronger team. The goal was coming for us ... and if SDR had slipped the ball to Caaplow in the last 5 minutes instead of taking one touch too many, we could easily have had the winner.

5. Hammond's suspension will only ( I guess) be for the League Cup game - for which he may well have been rested.

The 1 negative:

The way that we couldn't hold the ball up in the first half which meant that Reading seemed to always have possession.

Chaplow was magnificent again....my wife is a Reading season ticket holder and also pointed out that we appeared fitter than Reading.

Great result considering we had ten men....Cork, Hammond relatively anonymous and ineffectual....Guly was poor and just didn't get into the game....Connoly much the same as Guly.

Tin number 3 is going down as I type

De Ridder was quality when he came on. Other than that it just didn't seem to click tonight. There were times where we built up well, but lacked a final ball. Having said that, we had a few great chances to get another goal, like Martin's header and Fox's chance that was blocked. Disappointed that Drank got himself sent off.

MOTM for me was probably Davis, with De Ridder pushing him close.

Support was quality, but at times where we were under pressure I felt we could use a bit more singing to get behind the lads, but that's understandable as most were probably too busy biting their nails off/sh*tting themselves.

Loved the goal celebrations, found myself bundled to the floor after falling over the row infront, great fun.

The train back was great, singing and banter the whole way back.

Might upload a video i took of what happened to a lone Reading fan on the opposite platform @ Reading after the game. :)

De ridder was my MOM for today, I was at the game and he just ripped apart that reading defence

still think he should stay on the bench as other team's defence just cant keep up with him after 60 mins

Adkins should have started him. Poor management from him today.

Shock, horror, Saints in not playing like Barcelona every week and beating everybody 5 nil. FFS, we're going great guns, and it's totally unrealistic that we'll be excellent every week. Sometimes we'll have to grind out a result when we're playing poorly. 8 wins, 3 draws and 2 narrow defeats. 3 points clear at the top after 13 games.

By the way, if you were the prat behind me at the game today, getting stuck into 'Fatty Lambert' every 30 seconds, you're a fecking disgrace. Cut the guy some slack, he's been great all season so, when he has an off day, he deserves some fecking support.

Great atmosphere today; although somewhat let down by the complete f*cking bellends in our row who weren't in their seats, refused to move when asked by the guys whose seats they were, and ended up having a full on ruck with each other midway through the first half. Pathetic little children.

Back from yet another game...

Much happier with this point than the point at Derby. Reading raised their game and we were yet again out of sorts on the road.

We are missing Lallana big time.

I do think we miss Lalana away, but we played really well at Derby, and against West Ham without him, and today we were hounded from the start. Reading got the game plan spot on, but started to run out of puff in the last 10 minutes. With 11 men I think we could have nicked that game!!

Guly was f**king junk... his lazy, inaccurate passes are far too frequent. He has about 1 good game in 5 and on the strength of that, is in the team for the next 4 games where he proceeds to be w4nk again. Guess he'll be good on Saturday then....

Not true, but did have a bit of an off day today, but so did many of our players. He set up the goal with a great pass!!

Agree, I am loving this season, and Reading just hounded us, and closed us down. They got their game plan spot on, and we could not get our normal game together. They marked our forwards out of the game by defending from the front. 100% has to go to Reading for their work rate man for man.

They have drawn with Boro, Derby and now us at home!! They are no mugs!

Great point. You often get people moaning on here about the atmosphere at St Mary's but even a poor night at SMS would easily beat today at the Madjeski (and indeed many other grounds).

As for the game itself - sometimes you have to put your hands up and say that the opposition played really well. Their recent form belies their league position and it wouldn't be a surprise if they climbed the table fairly quickly. That said we were pretty sloppy in possession and Guly and Connoly in particular just didn't get going. We improved no end when SDR came on for Connoly(?) and the ball started to stick up front. Would like to see Adkins try a fluid 4-5-1 away from home to make sure we dominate possession a bit more and soak up the early effort from the opposition. Considering they didn't get a lot of protection from midfield I thought Davis and the defence were really good tonight.

Do you think that Guly has warranted his place with Tuesdays and Today's performances?

I damn well hope not. Awful today. Epitomised in the second half when we could have had a break, ball played out to him on the left, he just stood there waiting for it and their player nipped in front of him and drove on, forcing a foul and free kick on the edge of our box. Lazy, lazy play that instead of hitting them on the counter attack led directly to us being right under the cosh.

He was a liability today, and I really hope de Ridder gets a game instead of him as he seems to have so much more to offer.

TBH I think going down to 10 men did us good, it increased our work ethic which up until then (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF CHAPLOW WHO WAS EXCELLENT) was poor. And as for Guly i've always thought he was a wast of space and i've seen very little to change my mind on that.

Ka-Ching!

Plus..although i'm not 100% sure...it was another one of his (Guly) half arsed passes that was 15 yards long but 8 yards away from where it should have gone leading to Hammond doing his challenge to win the ball back... consequently fouling and getting sent off.

I must be seriously missing something with all the praise he gets. He has a good / great game every now and then. The amount of times he just ****ing floats around and plays appalling passes....meh!

He'll go and have a sodding blinder on the weekend no doubt..he's done sod all since he scored against Birmingham.

De Ridder seems to be getting better and better and has genuine pace and wants the ball...wants to run at people and has the skill and delivery to really cause problems! Cracking finish today too and a couple of great runs.

worst display this season by far IMO so to get a point with ten men is terrific. We were absolutely woeful in midfield, Cork especially was miles off his best and I'm starting to wonder if the rotation policy has ****ed him as he was in unbelievable form before being `rested'. Mind you even Cork came good in the last ten minutes when we desperately needed our midfielder to cover a lot of ground he stepped up.

Davis 8 some outstanding saves, catches and punches

Richardson 8 strong showing again. Can't ask a lot more of a fullback

Fonte 6 given a very hard test and dragged all over the place.

Jos 7 solid enough but the channel balls made life tough for him

Fox 8 strong and much better in possession with only one hollywood ball all game and that even went straight to de Ridder

Guly 5 worked hard and touch and passing was good, but we needed a bit more from him. He needs to see more of the ball in every game. Very little threat and even less so when moved up front

Chaplow 8 absolutely everywhere, hussled and bussled and broke up play, Great energy which came into its own when down to ten. Corners were crap.

Cork 2 woeful until last ten minutes, touch, passing and decisions poor. Break has not helped him. He has set very high standards, not met today that's for sure. Shoukd have been subbed after half an hour...

Hammond 5 slightly harsh second booking perhaps, but the risk was there. IMO he didn't offer himself enough and we never got our passing game going.

Lambert 4 in Pearce's pocket most of the game, when he did win headers they went to no one.

Connelly 3 zero threat, and some poor lay offs, which apart from his dropping into the hole to link up play is what he gives us - usually, but if they are not working he offers us nothing. Boy do we need an option up front

Martin 6 solid defensively, but the kick it off for safety is taken way too far, he doesn't even try to smash it up field. Just taping it off for a throw is safe yes, but this is the second level in English football not Tyro league

Morgan - should have brought him on at half time IMO for Cork

de Ridder 8 great impact and outstanding goal, overplayed a little after that, but hard to criticise

One final thing, why do I always seem to get stuck standing behind the idiot that stands on the seat and gives ****** signs to the home fans the entire game before trying to break the seat in front of him.

Indeed it was; silly challenge from Hammond but put right into the sh*t by a lazy, sloppy ball from Guly.

I'm totally in agreement with your assessment with him; brilliant sometimes, frustratingly poor far too often. And with SdR too, I genuinely think with him on one wing and Lallana the other we could be have something pretty incredible.

thought their fans on the right hand side were very good personally. The rest of the ground was **** though.

spot on. Chaplow worked harder and Cork woke up. There were a few holes but you'd hardly notice we had lost a player.

No doubt about it Reading had done their homework on us and made a point of stopping us playing our usual game. That Sid the passing was a tad slipshod, compounded on numerous occasions by Guly not quite being at the races today. Chaplow was like a man possessed, I have to say that I really saw how much Rickie gives to the team today. Steve de Ridder was like a box of fireworks left with the lid open that a stray spark has drooped into, his yellow card for bumping into a Reading player has to be the booking ever applied by a ref: if that was a yellow then matey wrestling Richardson to the ground so untidily was a red!

The ref was appalling and definitely sponsored by Clintons, no way was it a dirty game but no one got a second or even first chance bang straight in the book (back to division 1 for him next week).

Tonight was definitely one of those games where we ground out a result, as the media note the sign of a good team is being able to get a result when you have not played well.

What nice people in the White Swan Three Mile Cross, when I asked if it was ok to leave the car in their car park the barmaid said no "problem at all, when we close around 5 the gates will be locked and re opened at 7pm" no demand for additional payment. Nice old pub too, which will certainly get my custom again especially as I only live 12 miles down the road.

Youth club, and did nothing after being pegged back to 1-1.

Their "106" song was f*cking cringeworthy as well.

Wasn't it just. What was it they were spelling out? Sounded like "farty" to me! Would have been fairly apt considering someone down the front of the away end was polluting the air with the vile remnants of their curry and 10 pints the night before.

actually yes I suggested he didn't break the seat. He asked why the **** not? I said it wasn't cool, he told me to **** off.

Pretty sure that was their "he's M-U-R-T-Y" song. Another facepalm moment.

Don't get me started on the music played when they scored, f*ck me!!

perhaps so, but they made a decent effort up until that point. Pretty tough when up against 4200 of us in full voice. I've been to many worst places. What was the 106 song? I couldn't hear the words to that. Edited by Chez

Ha ha, I forgot that one! First time I've heard Southampton described as a seaside!

ha ha, I heard that but asumed they had adopted Brighton as a local rival or something.

Yep. They were in front of me and to the left.

Not sure if the same place then, but I was down the front on the right hand side as you look at the pitch from the stand (near the noisier Reading fans) and it kicked off down there in the first half. Silly little boys at fault.

Really disappointing away day. Looking forward to it all week but I guess Derby and West Ham took a lot out of the team and the fans? We just never got going, Reading wanted it more, hunted us down, and made much better use of the ball when they had it.

Too many of our players had an off day: Cork, Hammond, Gully, and Connely all went missing in action today, throw in Lambert who hardly got a look in against their CB's, and we were really up against it.

To go down to 10 men and get a point was prob the best we could have hoped for in the circs; it could have been all three if Fox or Chaplow had gone for the first time finish .....

First time at the Maj for me and on that showing probably the last to. God-forsaken, middle of nowhere, out of town monstrosity. The actual stadium is very good but the distance to town, parking, buses, congestion etc. makes it an absolute pig of a day. For anybody on here that keeps on about relocating SMS, be very careful what you wish for!

Did anyone see what happened with the two who were escorted out in the first half?

As they walked out they certainly looked like they didn't have enough lemonade in their pre match shandies. Going on the way two ladies went to the stewards, it seems that they had crossed a line. Silly buggers.

Yeah, ok then, that was in our row. We (5 of us) got to our seats lateish and there was only 2 spare; we naturally got people to move up. Apparently 3 young scrotes decided they wanted to be closer to reading rather than their allocated seats. So they just pushed up a bit and were standing in amongst 2 or 3 older boys. After not moving for a few minutes, the older boys rightly got a bit p*ssed of and asked them to move elsewhere. The scrotes refused. The older boys kept their patience and kept asking them nicely to move, the tossers just refused. In the end, one of the older boys said to his mate "I'm going to f*cking smack one of them in a bit, will you back me up?" "Yeah, alright, was the response". Cue the mini ruck and ejections.

There we go, and we're on TV now...

100% I'm afraid to say IF WE ARE GOING TO PLAY A PASSING GAME them Guly will NOT fit into this tactic at an absolute liability. gave away pass for the goal and sendinding off...........He has had time enough........It is not working with him in the team - now letting us down big time...........I'm patient but NOT THAT PATIENT!! Time to end his first team run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
