Reading v Saints Post Match Reaction

We were poor & we got a point.................12 months ago we were in the bottom half of the 3rd division FFS. I know we can do better, but Adkins honesty in the post match interview was great. We were poo & got a 1pt!!!

We passed poorly & I personally believe we need to get a loan striker in as DC has been pretty poor for the last 3 or 4 games.

Davis Joos were excellent today. Fonte's form this season has been a worry too.

Davis saved the game for us. Hooiveld, what a player, MUST sign him in January.

As for De Ridder,I say it every week, he is a different class, once again single handedly lifted the team and turned the game around when he came on.

Next step in an excellent start.

Winning at home and picking up odd points away will ease us into the premiership.

We will finish this hard run of games with the Middlesbrough game - knowing even if we lose that no team will have more points than us going into November.

November has 3 home games (against 7th, 10th, 12th) and two away games (against 21st and 24th) - would hope for at least 10 points from those and still top going into December.....

This is where things may get interesting. Firstly I am delighted to come away from the game with a point - it is a real plus point and the mentality of being used to winning and drawing games helps here - the players will be thinking all the time they can get back into it.

However, Adkins has mentioned it may not be time to rotate. But we don't have many options to do this. So players who may not be hitting the peaks of the first few months may have to play - and how many 'passengers' in terms of productivity can we carry? How many should we carry? This is a real challenge and it will be interesting to see how Adkins approaches it.

The sending off was a sending off if you ask me, Deano mistimed, no malice at all. I guess, if anything, it makes Adkins selection decision easier! When Chaplow gets booked, I often worry about him getting sent off. I don't have that concern about Deano - although I might now. When a centre back gets booked, I worry, and I was quite pleased (perversely) when Fonte was taken off. Possibly our dodgiest player on Tuesday night, and I thought Martin did very well when he came on. (Could've scored too.)

We were woeful today, and still got a point, so overall I'm very happy with the result. Reading are a good team - Le Fondre is making other nPC sides look stupid for not taking a punt on him, and I thought Gorkss and Mills both had good games. Thank God for De Ridder, he really is a talent, he has a lovely touch, some tricks and some pace, and he knows where the goal is - this guy is going to be a big asset for us. Oxlade-Chamberlain who?!? De Ridder does deserve a start against Palace to show what he can do in 90 minutes, and prove he's worth a league place. Guly's pass for the goal was exquisite - it's these flashes of brilliance which show why he's in our starting XI. I have to say I'd drop Connolly for Palace, he needs a rest. The man has a great footballing brain, but just isn't fully there at the moment. Without Barnard, this does highlight the need for another striker, but that debate will run and run.

We needed a Lallana today - a player to put his foot on the ball and keep the passes accurate. In the first half, far too many passes were going astray, and we didn't seem to be fighting for every ball like we usually do. Kelvin deserved his MOTM award.

I almost can't believe this point, bring on Palace. (Which will be very difficult - they're flying!)

What are you talking about ? he played 45 minutes, the whole second half.......mind you if your marking of half the team is SH*T I suppose he's got off quite lightly.

Haha! That's how sozzled I am! Didn't notice he was on until 80 minutes! That doesn't mean my other scores mean nothing though!

Davis - 7.

Fox - 8. Another top notch performance.

Fonte - 7

Hooiveld - 7.5

Frazer - 7. Thought the defense was our only shining light today, bar one or two...

Guly - SH*T.

Cork - SH*T

Hammond - SH*T

Chaplow - 8

Connelly - SH*T

Lambert - SH*T

SDR - 9. Yet again, changed the game. Quite when he is going to start a game is beyond me.

Spiderman - 6. Meh.

Martin - N/A. Not enough to judge.

That is all.

Agree for the most part apart from those bolded above.

I thought Davis was absolutely first class; some good saves and commanded his box for crosses in from some dangerous corners. Really didn't do anything wrong at all and kept us in it during the first half when we were shocking.

Rickie, thought he was fairly quiet but even still, up against two giant centre halves he still won plenty in the air and acted as a conduit. Would give him a 6, but definitely not sh*t.

Morgan, thought he actually showed what a CM should do when he came on. Got hold of the ball, most importantly didn't just give it away, and was good at the end when trying to keep the ball and see out time. Thought he was harshly dropped in the first place, neither Hammond nor Cork did enough to justify inclusion instead of him.

In general, I thought Connolly was pretty poor and ineffectual. Guly, awful, truly awful.

De Ridder, wow, what a player he could yet be for us. Strong, quick, hungry and deadly when he got into a forward position. Guilty of being not being selfish wnough at the end, tried to play in Chaplow but could have gone on his own.

And Chaplow, another brilliant bustling performance, ProZone will surely show that he put in an immense amount of running, top quality.

Turned up at the MadStad expecting a good performance and was given a mediocre display from quite a few team members (but not us fans, who were pretty good indeed). Davis kept us in it to be honest, as our Centre of Midfield let Reading come at us and lay siege to our goal. Made some fantastic saves. De Ridder u legend.

Ratings are as follows...:

Davis - 9 (MoTM) - very good, commanding display especially as they had so many crosses and corners. Caught and dominated well.

Richardson - 7 - tough game for him but a decent display nonetheless.

Fonte - 7 - won a few headers but did give it to them a bit, though so did the whole team.

Fox - 7.5 - another great display, put in some good challenges and got forward well.

Hooiveld - 7 - under pressure a lot but did well

Cork - 4 - outmuscled, outfought, and caught in possession a fair few times.

Deano - 6 - put himself about well, but perhaps got stuck in too much.

Guly - 6 - a few pieces of good play and link up, and got back well. but i felt he needed to put more effort in to relieve pressure.

Chappers - 7 - energetic and created chances. Main attacking threat in first half.

Lambo - 5 - won maj. Of headers, especially defensively, but didn't click well on the ground when trying to link up

Connolly - 4 - poor game imo.

Martin - 7 - did well under pressure for such a yoing lad

Deridder - 8.5 good impact, great goal but needed to pass more

Scheiderlin - 6 - did reasonably well. Broke up some attacks and kept it simple.

Fans were really good, especially considering we had it against us a goal down and with 10 men. Love it that we sing straight after conceding, which is why I was baffled by Reading's chant of 'you're not singing anymore'.

Hoping for better against CP and Boro'

Just got back now, I though we were absolutely terrible. Guly, Hammond, Cork, Lambert and Connolly were all totally annonomous. Luckily, Reading weren't much better. It was an awful game of football.

Take the point and move on.

Bad day at the office, but a great point in the circumstances. The passing was awry today, in midfield we looked slow & lethargic most of the game Chaplow apart. We seemed to lack any pace going forward until De-Ridder came on & started to give them some problems & pace to contend with. I thought there centre backs got away with a lot today, every time Lambert got his head to a ball he ended up on the deck having been fouled happened time & time again. I thought Martin looked assured when he came on & was unlucky with his header. As for the sending off was unlucky with the first booking, but lost his head for the second. All in all a very good point won today. We deffinately need a quick striker to complement Lambert.

Credit to Reading they played well today & will be pig sick they didn't get 3-points.

Just had a quick gander on the Reading forum, boy they are laying into Mills big style over there....''Get him out of the team, he's costing us points''

And, to my surprise, they thought we looked a very good team on tonights showing!

Shows what they know about football!!! I thought Mills had a good game - he was unlucky not to get a look in for Saints, he'll become a good left back. If anything perhaps he tried too hard today. As for us being good? Perhaps they say that to justify the fact their team didn't come away with a win.

Like many, I'm happy enough with the point. Don't think for a second that Reading dominated us, but what they did very well was negate us, when of course, we weren't negating ourselves.

Disappointed with discipline. First, wtf was Fonte thinking? Even though he was fouled, he could have been sent off for that. Really stupid behaviour. There were a fair few cards dished out in the game. The only one that I thought was genuinely undeserved was the one doled out to Steve De Ridder. No complaints about the Hammond sending off, but it should all be avoidable.

Reading did a good job on us today. That said, very impressed with the defence. Kelvin Davis, once described to me as someone "who couldn't catch a cold", was blooming marvellous. Looks like he dished out a couple of bollockings on the pitch too.

Football balances out. We deserved at least a point at Leicester and didn't get it, arguably deserved nothing today and got a point. The big positive? Steve De Ridder is ready to start.

Doesn't look like Fonte actually got a touch on the ball with his hand to me, should it have been a yellow? Hammond looked disappointed to be sent off, that shows his good attitude. Reading are a team we should be beating but they're in very good form at the moment and i'm happy with a point today. NA said post-match that he should have rested a few players that played against West Ham, I don't think Connolly has been at his best of late and if Barney is fit and eligible to play, I would like to see him back in the starting line-up. Great energy up front and good finisher too.

Difficult game coming up against Middlesbrough next Saturday then Posh on tuesday night, will be another interesting week...

I hope you're joking. One of the most blatant deliberate handballs ever, very lucky to not be a red.

He stuck his arm up, no doubt, but it didn't look to me like he got much of a touch on the ball. I was watching the highlights on the BBC website's live stream rather than on a nice crisp HD telly but it didn't look like there was too much contact in my view. Still, I suppose deliberately sticking your arm up to deflect the ball is worth a yellow anyway, contact or none.

LOL, one of the most blatant handballs ever, almost caught the bloody thing. In his defence he did get a nudge in the back and thought he would get a FK, but stupid, always play to the whistle. There was a good argument that he should have been red-carded as he was last man. Ref appeared to have given him benefit of the doubt because he realised he had been pushed. As for Hammond looking disappointed showing he has good attitude, are you for real? So he should look disappointed, shocking attitude, two poor challenges deserved 2 yellows.

A lot of players would have screamed at the ref for giving him 2 yellows, even if they were for 2 shocking tackles. No complaining, he knew he'd done wrong and he was straight off the pitch. I think that shows good attitude tbh.

Just needs to work on his tackling in the future ;)

Oh dear 3 games without Hammond whatever shall we do !

Judged on his performance tonight, he won't be missed that much!! At present, Chaplow and MS are our form midfielders, although Cork got going following the send off. Chaplow the man-of-the-match; Fox very good again and Davis top class in goal.

Davis was class tonight. The team performance was very poor as are Reading. Reading had very little in attack, when at home thats pretty embarrassing, just a lot of shooting at Kelvin and nothing else...

De Ridder shows why we payed what ever we payed for him and them some, loved seeing him DELIGHTED to get the equaliser, already a proper saint after 1 league start and 3-4 sub appearances. Give him a bit longer and he'll know what to do :)

Glad Fonte was subbed at half time as he was struggling, Deano should have come off when he got the first yellow as he'd done the same tackle twice before...

Finally Chappers Man of the Match, was everywhere, tried so hard and generally got his way, really impressed me just for his commitment to the cause. A point hard won but could have been so different either way so a point each probably was a fair result

Yes they've been on Mills case for a while, personally thought he looked pretty good certainly not out of his depth at this level, but becuase every free kick and cross he plays doesn't result in a goal he is crap according to some reading fans. De ridders goal was all Mills fault as well according to Reading fans watching the highlights De Ridder is in the box on his own with about five reading players all who failed to stop him so why they're picking on Mills I have no idea.

If they thought we looked a good team on tonights showing they must watch a really poor level of football normally. I'm struggling to think of a game where our midfield has been that poor in a long time.

First game shown in Australia this season. Cannot understand how we are top. We got battered. Guly set up most of Reading's best attacks. Still, getting a point out of that is a good sign. Still reckon top half would be a good result for us this season.

Trust me we do not normally play like that, we haven't played that badly in a long (long) time.

That was a good point in a game we could have and maybe should have lost, Reading did their home work and dit not let us play the Adkins way.

totally agree how many times in the past away from home would we have just rolled over and got stuffed, 4 points every 2 games from now to the end of the season will not be bad news.

Reading did their homework but we're easy to set up against without pace and options in behind them. Teams can play a high line and press with impunity, knowing everything will be played in front of them. And how many of our players can genuinely beat a man in a one on one situation?
