Reading v Saints Post Match Reaction

Very pleased to earn a point in the end, yet we could have nicked it even with 10 men. Would have been very harsh on Reading who were **** hot except in front of goal. In our faces and winning every 50/50 ball at least for 55-60 minutes. We looked dozy and our passinng was woeful, which is very unusual. Guly especially was guilty time and again of giving the ball away. Hoofing the ball up to DC was also a pointless exercise, DC could not hold the ball up at all. At least if we are going to hoof do it for Rickie as he holds it up. Thought Cork was poor although very industrious, Chaplow was very good and unlucky a few times. Kelvin kept us in it time and again. Jos was solid, although 2 or 3 times in the 1st half his clearanw as poor. Srangely after they scored they no longer looked much of a threat, apart from some set pieces Martin did not have much to do. Jose was lucky to have not been red carded but he was clearly fouled before he handled, but as always should play to the whistle.

Credit to Reading, you won't see many teams play that well and dominate us like they did. Just shows that their league position belies the fact that they are on a decent unbeaten run. Still, we're still top of the league, very happy with that. COYR.

Phew!

Very fortunate to get anything from that, but it's a sign of a good team.

Guly, Connolly and Hammond particularly disappointing.

Full credit to Reading, they played a very high tempo game, won the midfield battle and stopped us from playing.

We had some chances, but Reading will see that as a chance missed.

On to the next one!

To be honest, yes, we were poor, but it was mostly because Reading were superb tactically. They had an answer for everything we threw at them. Plan A and B failed, but we had some success with plan C (ie getting the ball to the superb De Ridder and let him scare them). Their midfield dominated us and I would like to have seen MS on at the same time as SDR.

Positives: Chaplow's fitness and desire. The performances of Hooiveld and, actually Fox, who had the best game I've sen from him live.

Beat Middlesborough and we'll look back on this as a ****ing amazing week

Just back from the game. No movement was the main problem, along with the fact we had no width and the full backs didnt bomb on at all. Thats why Steve de Ridder made such a massive difference, he was running the channels very well. Delighted with a point from it though as with 10 mins to go and down to 10 men I thought it was all over.

This. Would add that Guly was off the boil totally. De Ridder was excellent as soon as he came on, should start Tues. Reading fans idiots, clearly it pi@sses them off that they are not on the up unlike us. Get over it, you had your 5 mins of fame. Felt like a very good point on the way out

Well below par but still managed to get a point - overall we can't be too unhappy with the outcome. And as I've said before, an occasional kick up the arse like that is sometimes a good thing.

Reading did well but we brought most of the pressure on to ourselves with some very poor passing, especially underhit touches and lay offs, just like the one that tempted Hammond into his sending off. I felt a bit sorry for him and you couldn't argue with the decision but both his bookings came from him simply trying to battle hard and win possession back after teammates had lost the ball.

We know we can play better than that. The effort was there and I didn't think there was any complacency, we simply played bad football and too many passes failed to connect.

On the plus side, I thought we defended pretty well and given that our defending hasn't been the best at times this season, and we lost Fonte at half time. Martin did well coming on into a tough game, and the whole side battled hard... we would've made it much easier for ourselves had our passing been even vaguely close to how we've seen in most games.

The team need to be hard on themselves and recognise how underpar they were, but not dwell on it too long. We know we can be better and we just need to get back to what we're capable of.

Brilliant post, summed it up for me exactly. spot on.

Didn't play well, reading were the best team I've seen so far in this league, and very happy with a point - sdr was superb. Got to express some anger at the commentary team though, hugely biased - I think we definitely should've had a peno first half, they scarcely mentioned it and we only got one, full speed, replay of what I thought was a major incident! Still win at home, draw away, top of the league, no complaints!

it may be no bad thing to have a humbling moment after the West Ham game, we didn't look like champions tonight and that should motivate players.

And I would rather have that wake up call in the style of a tough away point than a battering from Millwall on our own patch having spent a fortune.

Good point, great goal, Saints march on.

Was it Guly's **** poor pass that led to Hammond getting sent off ? I believe it was.

I get the impression that Guly is a bit of a home player to be honest.

Yeah it was Guly. When the opposition are pressing, you can almost see the cogs turning in his brain. He seems so slow at times but give him a little space and he can play a superb pass.

MOTM for me was Chaplow. Unbelievable workrate and never gave up on anything. If the rest of the team had followed his example it would have been a completely different game.

He really deserves praise for his match today - he seemed to be everywhere and broke up a number of dangerous attacks while still coming forward at every opportunity... MotM for me too.

Guly is a luxury player, but he has improved a lot in his overall game play. Back at the start of his time with us he would try something clever, lose the ball and then stand still watching the opposition bugger off with it. Now he chases it down when he loses it, he has more fight and determination. But... he does lose the ball too often. When it works for him though it's superb and he has the ability to make things happen (like De Ridders goal!), so he's worth having around.

Fonte worries me. I know he is a big favourite among us all, but he has worried me this season and today looked like a different man to the player of the season we had last year. Not just the stupid handball, but just looking a yard behind the play and a lesser player than before. Something has changed and I'm not convinced it's just the opposition.

De Ridder needs to start up front next game, IMO. Chaplow was excellent today, the hardest working person in our team and my MoM.

Overall, a point is a fair result and one to be satisfied with. If we can win and home and draw away, we will do OK.

Please NA, this is no criticsm of you but without Adam L the team cries out for width, either de Ridder or Holmes. The full backs are asked to push forward too much in order to fill in but it leaves us so exposed.Chaplow was excellent at covering back but neither Hammond or Cork can do it so well.Great to get a point when we played so badly though!!

you can sigh all you like you sarcastic sod but we were second best and didnt deserve any more than a point.

Yes, but that's going to happen at times throughout the season. Reading were well organised and had done their homework on us. Ironically we were starting to take control when they scored. We finished very strongly, even with 10, and it was a great goal. A point won not two loast. Draw the blue line, move on.

This was the first chance I've had to actually watch saints (on TV) this season. I've heard so much about how good we are now that it was a real anticlimax. We were certainly not better than them today.

Chaplow was everywhere, even right at the end of the 90 minutes, Davis was superb.

I see Guly's getting the worst of it, but I arrived at the pub just after kick off and it wasn't until into the second half that I finally found out that it was Hammond who was playing alongside Cork, he was utterly impossible to spot until then and I was trying to work out who the team were from the moment I arrived. Then I finally spot him and he's sent off soon after. Connolly seemed quite ineffective too.

I like Cork, but as someone else said he seemed to follow on from where he left off in the West ham game. Anonymous, outmuscled and a passenger. Wrong game for him? used to more time on the ball? lost a bit of confidence? lost a bit of form?

ouch painful watching god we were poor -but great result all things considered a point gained

Kelvin was my MOTM great display - honourable mention to Chappers and SDR (great goal)

Time to rest Fonte? he seems to be going down hill by the game what was he doing with that handball?

Aroan Martin proved once again IMO that he he can step up to the mark if needed with a decent display.

Jos after a shaky couple of games is starting to look the dogs b ollocks I have to say.

Fair play to Reading they played well and looked a much better team than west sham on that showing.

Finally why did we let Mills go? thought he looked very good to day in the main.

Saints were pretty poor from the start. Lethargic and continually mispassing to Reading players. Only Kelvin (my man of the match) and Chaplow looked

half interested until De Ridder came on. We only finally played as we can in the last 15 minutes when we were down to ten men.

Too casual. Not good enough.

It appears lost on some that if Guly had been subbed earlier we would have lost the game because the through ball for the goal would never have happened

To be fair Guly was quite poor today, but then so were Cork, Connally, Lambert - in some cases beyond criticism it would seem.

As it happens before todays game i considered it the hardest of the season, and while we played badly, Reading, ones of the leagues toughest sides, were excellent - as such this was a great point and says a lot about the team's character. A Great point.

Derby away / W.Ham home / Reading away = 5 points. Will take that all day long

Got back a little while ago. Don't think we were as bad as some are making out. Shows how far we've come I guess!

Need to get a striker in on loan I think as Connolly hasn't been much kop recently and doesn't look like Barnard will be back any time soon. De Ridder needs to get a run of starts, has impressed me whenever I've seen him. Loved the celebrations when we scored today, went absolutely mental!

Reading's support was pretty ****e...only one block of fans to our right making any noise at all. Although given our numbers we weren't great until the last twenty minutes or so. Why did they chant 'Seasiders, **** **** ****' at us?! And despite being local I could barely make out what they were saying in most of their chants!

Pleased with the point which we did not deserve. De Ridder made a massive difference when he came on. We were slow to the ball, not winning 50/50 balls. Thank god that Kelvin played out of his skin with some crucial saves

Have to say well done to the travelling support. I was sat in the opposite stand and you didn't stop singing the whole match

They aren't a better team than West Ham. That was every ounce of effort from Reading, they were great, and they failed to win. West Ham were away to the league leaders, a HUGE difference.

I didn't say they were better I said they looked better on that showing today. Reading got the ball down and played west ham hoofed it. West ham weren't very good on Tuesday Reading we're pretty good today. Not sure why you'd have a problem with that?

Just back. Got to say steve d has to play ahead of connolly. He really is out of form at the moment and doesn't even look like stringing a pass together let alone scoring a goal. Cork was terrible today I wonder if he is carrying a slight knock, we were screaming out for MOrgan. On the plus side chaplow put in another great performance! Guly didn't play well today, but you expect him to be a bit hit or miss, shame he doesn't use his pace more effectively and really drive at defenders! All in all.a good point won with lallana missing.

OK so thought that Hammond & Cork got overrun in midfield by their pressing, left Guly with tidbits. Chaplow was the only stand out in that mess for me in the bits the stream let me see.

That meant no service for RL & DC. Connolly is superb when we are playing the ball around, but not so useful when we need to stand up and fight to play. Perhaps he now needs rotating.

KD was his usual self, superb save in the first half.

Cork & Fonte both seem to have gone off the boil, but Jos seemed to do a good job.

Shame the idiot programmers here decided we couldn't watch it and they showed a THIRD repeat of the Brum Europa League game instead or may have had more insight.

BUT before the game I was worried about this game, we've got through it and yet another point. Give the fringe players a run out on Tuesday & rest RL & DC for sure as the Boro game now becomes ANOTHER massive game.

Hell of a tough spell of games this, would be awesome to come through unbeaten

Having given up with the live stream due to it freezing all the time switched back to Saintsplayer to get the Reading taters at HT actually saying they thought it was a Penalty & if they'd been playing away from home they were pretty sure it would've been given

Got back from the game about 15-20 mins ago after dropping my Mate off I go with n who I share a ST with at home as well!

I don't know how to see this game as whether the draw is a Good or a Bad one but it shows that most teams would have foldered

or something-But Saints showed there grit and determination at the end to grind out the draw which is OK as were still Top which

is Good!

Thought Chaplow did well in the 1st half and came out the blocks like he has been doing for the past few games which is Good-But I

gave my MOTM to De Ridder as he did well when he came on and scored a Great goal for 1-1 as it was a toss up between him and Chaplow

for MOTM! Hammond was also a Tit for getting a red-But we'l move on and we should have cover for him while he's out!

Am starting to get Worried about how long Lalanna's going to be out for as we do miss him Tbh and hopefully he'l be back for the

Middlesbrough game on Sat (29th!)!

COYR :D!!!

Mediocre but not poor performance. Some praise needs to be given to Reading, their tactics and work-rate. They stopped us playing our game by pressing, pressing, pressing. Some poor performances mixed with some very good ones. Some posters are having a go at Cork but I thought he played okay. Guly to me was the weak link in midfield, thought he was terrible. Thought Fonte was poor before he went off and we looked a lot more solid once Martin came on. Have we ever had a fitter player than Chaplow plying for Saints. He was absolutely everywhere and deserved to score with one of his chances. I'm usually one of Kelvin's harshest critics but thought he was great today. Lambert had a quite game but then he had next to no service and De Ridder changed the game when he came on (helped by McAnuff going off). Great contribution and great goal. 4 points from the two games this week, I'll take that thanks very much!

Davis - 7.

Fox - 8. Another top notch performance.

Fonte - 7

Hooiveld - 7.5

Frazer - 7. Thought the defense was our only shining light today, bar one or two...

Guly - SH*T.

Cork - SH*T

Hammond - SH*T

Chaplow - 8

Connelly - SH*T

Lambert - SH*T

SDR - 9. Yet again, changed the game. Quite when he is going to start a game is beyond me.

Spiderman - 6. Meh.

Martin - N/A. Not enough to judge.

That is all.

From front to back.....

KD was excellent.

Back Four - Fox very professional and composed. Richardson's first touch is suspect but love his will to win. Hooiveld made very good choices the whole game. Fonte...off the pace today, and a great decision to sub him for Martin....he would have got a second yellow.Martin is a great prospect but his inability (which sometimes is good in a defender) to play it out will hinder his development.

Mid - Guly....needs time out....too many passes astray which puts pressure on back 4, Chaplow - needs a lie down!!. MOM no question high energy/high commitment. Cork - where is the player we saw against Leeds etc and early games??.....he rarely won a tackle all day. Hammond.....worked hard, but really a Lge 1 player tbh.....frustration got his 2nd yellow.

Upfront - Lambert was struggling today....but glimpses of brilliance. His pass into Guly denied by keeper was superb. Connolly - I am of the view that he really is at his best with Llalana.....they have a wavelength/intelligence. He was lightweight with hoof balls coming in today. SDR - what can I say.....his intensity today won us a point......NA is clearly working with his decision making - he will be a real asset second half of season.

Will need Llalana and Barney back and soon.....

Fans - we were superb today - best of all in the town centre lol !!.Crap location for a ground.

A point won today.
