Are there ANY pubs left in Swaything/Bassett any more ?

The Stoneham Arms, the Hogshead, and thats about it.

Was that The Hedgehog & Hogshead, originally the Style on the corner of University Rd?. I can't remember when it changed it's name but I knew it as The Hedgehog in the early 90s. Used to go there when The Frog & Frigate closed & Derek the guitarist moved to the Hedgehog. It reverted back to The Style years ago.

That Jolly Sailor looks suspiciously like what was The Roll Call in Butlocks Heath, if that's still open.

There was a pub called The Seaweed or the Seaweed Hut in Weston, wasn't there?

I remember The Sportsman's in West End. It had one of those Witch's Hat swings/roundabout. I remember being taken there by my parents, and some kid climbing the frame to the top, trying to grab the pole and then wondering where the tips of his fingers went when the hat swung round and crushed them.

I recall the 'old' Basset, years before it became a Beefeater, or whatever chain it was. At the back, they had an amazing sunken garden, with all sorts of stuff for kids. There were the old type of funfair swingboats, where you pulled on a rope to propel yourself, a menagerie, and a pony and trap that gave rides to kids. You might also have been allowed just inside the bar to have a look at the full-sized stuffed bear in the glass case. If my memory serves, it escaped from a circus on the Common and was shot.

I lived in Netley, that does look a bit like the Roll Call but its not. Looks much more like the Harrier in Hamble to me, maybe they changed their name? The Jolly Sailor in Old Bursledon is still going strong I think. And yeh, there was a pub called the Seaweed on the S-bend towards Weston shore, back in the eighties. Its probably a housing estate by now.

On the first day of a new job back March 1988, myself, my mate (who was instrumental in getting me the job) & 2 new colleagues went for a liquid lunch there (complete with a chilli-jacket IIRC). We were 15-20 minutes late back, I was bricking it,:uhoh: fortunately the boss was even later back from his lunch.

My sister was the last manager of the place before it was demolished, we had several good christmas parties there, purely for family, staff & a few special punters after the diners had left. The kids loved having the run of the pub (& ball pit downstairs), whilst we had a free bar.
