Pretty bad one. Almost suffered from brain damage.

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Derby-Steven-Davies-to-play-with-10-metal-plates-in-his-head-after-horror-injury-article817697.html

I didn't pay close attention to the game as I was in town for most of the 90 minutes, I know Davies was taken off but never imagined it would be that bad:

“It could have been a whole lot worse because it was millimetres away from possible brain damage, millimetres from being career-threatening,” said Davies.

He has 16 stitches running across the top of his left eyebrow and will carry the scars of his operation at the Royal Derby Hospital for the rest of his life.

“On Saturday night the surgeon talked about cutting from ear to ear right across my skull and going in that way to repair the damage,” said Davies.

“That terrified me. I said I didn’t want that doing and at that time, I still thought it was just a little depressed fracture.

“The surgeon did the operation through my left eyebrow.

“He said later that if he’d known how much damage I had done he would have made the cut right across my head and gone in that way.

“When he told me he’d put 10 metal plates in, I was shocked.

“He said he couldn’t put my skull back together given how badly it was damaged.

“So he had to make a bridge and fill it with artificial bone to get my head back to its normal shape.

“The 22 screws are in there to make sure everything is held together *properly.

“The skull has two layers and the first layer was smashed.

I for one would like to wish him a speedy recovery and hope he's playing for them again soon.

I only realised how bad it was when the (extended) highlights were shown on the Football League Show - there was a visible dent in his head! Saints players were passing a ball between themselves whilst play was stopped.. "Brazil, it's just like watching Brazil.."

Think he's had a history of freakish injuries, so not exactly blessed with luck. He likes to throw himself about, so hopefully the injury doesn't curb his natural game.

It was an accidental clash of heads, didnt look that bad at the time til he got carted off. Bit of a shocker outcome-wise, I'm certain there wasnt any intent. Hope he recovers completely and quickly.

Just to wish him a speedy recovery and better luck in the future.

Regretably, it's the way the game is played these days, ultra competitive all-or-nothing commitment. It looks harmless enough from the touchline but up close and personal it's fast, rough and physical. two lads in for the ball and focused only on the ball and crash... this type of accident is waiting to happen.

Was talking about the incident to a mate at the West Ham game and he wasn't even aware of it. I mentioned how it looked like his forehead had a big indentation in it and would have thought it would be a problem, but surprised that I had heard nothing since.

Can only say good luck to the fella and hope he recovers from it.

If you can watch the incident again, I don't think it was a clash of heads. Fonte got a clean head on the ball an Davis' left brow was facing in the opposite direction to Jose's head. If there was a clash of heads it would've been on the opposite side of Davis' head.

Jose's left arm was in the air as he jumped. I think you'll find it was his elbow that caused the damage.
