Jimmy_D Posted 19 October, 2011 Share Posted 19 October, 2011 One thing we DO do well is get right behind the team when they need us most. Just after we concede we always get a loud chant going and it does seem to help fire the team up.
whelk Posted 20 October, 2011 Share Posted 20 October, 2011 made i laugh: From their forum: "Were coming for you, we're coming for you..." wtf was that all about, considering they were nowhere to be seen after the game. Reply: Think they were referring to their game V Pompey, however from what I saw last night the big f***er with the bell would scatter em on his tod. doddisalegend Posted 20 October, 2011 Share Posted 20 October, 2011 WTF was this hammers fan watching The Saints think they have a good side...thats why i asked the question. I thought that was our 2nd worst display of the season...and they were hanging on. I don't see how anyone can take positives out of that game or give Southampton credit They were sh*t, we were worse and is this the ipswich we ****ged by 5 at their place? Funny, we were chatting with a couple of Saints fans before the game and I said I thought Ipswich were the best footballing side we have played this year love this one Right now it aint good enough and we should be wiping the floor with the teams in this league cos the league is in my humble not good - i aint seen a decent team yet. As a side, Southampton as a club are rather embarrassing nowadays. What was that half time game about? I cringed. A lot.

This Charming Man Posted 20 October, 2011 Share Posted 20 October, 2011 It isn't a load of rubbish at all. It's human nature that when people are nervous or apprehensive, they tend to be more withdrawn. It's one thing extolling the benefit of having the fans making a lot of noise in support of their team, quite another putting it into effect. As the match wore on and it became clear that we had no reason to be overawed by them, we became more relaxed and made more noise. When WH put more pressure on us towards the end, the noise levels cranked up quite a bit as the fans urged the players on to keep the clean sheet or score another. Yes it is. One of the best atmospheres I've experienced at SMS was the 4-3 Norwich game and there was a lot more riding on that than last night. Same goes for the FA Cup Final, Skate games, etc... The more riding on the game, the better the atmosphere. As Sour Mash said, Barnsley and the likes at home won't generate a better atmosphere than Tuesday night which is what you're alluding too. This Charming Man Posted 20 October, 2011 Share Posted 20 October, 2011 On another note, a WHU fan on the England forum said that the atmosphere was one of the best he's experienced in years from our lot and he goes everywhere with WHU and England. No it's not, I'm afraid. It is human nature for a set of fans to be subdued when they are wary, apprehensive, or in awe of the opponents, at least in the early stages until confidence grows when they realise that their fears might be groundless. Granted that other factors come into play when the match is a local derby, a must win game, or a Cup Final, but that is also influenced by the other set of fans too. If they crank up the noise, then that encourages us to do so too. It is seldom that there is singing and chanting all through the game, no matter what is at stake, as the crowd responds to what is going on on the pitch, as the players also often respond to the encouragement of the fans. Even in different areas of our ground the reaction is varied, some areas like the Northam attracting the fans who like to be more vocal. The situation is too complicated to make broad sweeping statements. If we had to beat Barnsley at home in the last match to achieve promotion or demotion, then I'm pretty sure the atmosphere would be more charged. Beating West Ham wasn't in that league of drama and their fans didn't make much noise to encourage a backlash from the Northam or Itchen corner. Jonnyboy Posted 20 October, 2011 Share Posted 20 October, 2011 I was in Block 2 and I thought the atmosphere was good. The northam seemed pretty quiet to me, has it been all season that the away fans have 43 and 44?

Jonnyboy Posted 20 October, 2011 Share Posted 20 October, 2011 No, it's only happened for the Leeds and West ham games when a club has sold out its full allocation. So that eats into the good atmos normally created by the northam?

Saint_clark Posted 20 October, 2011 Share Posted 20 October, 2011 I'd imagine that the more away fans there are, the more noise they make, the harder it is to hear the Northam. In reverse I only heard the West Ham fans once from block 42 because the Northam was making so much noise.
Jack Posted 20 October, 2011 Share Posted 20 October, 2011 We (the Northam), couldn't hear much out of West Ham or the Itchen, and I'm sure the Northam wouldn't have sounded too loud from the Itchen, with all that space and 3000 WHU fans between the two. From block 42 I thought it was average, but we got right behind the lads when it mattered. Kingsland north were louder than normal which was good, and it looked like the kingsland were getting involved all the way down to the halfway line at times. Good to see. Also, there were a couple of occasions when the Northam and Itchen north seemed to be singing the same songs at the same time, must have seemed loud for an away fan sat in the middle of that
MorningtonCrescent Posted 20 October, 2011 Share Posted 20 October, 2011 I'm pretty sure I can't make the noise of 29,000 people no matter how much the wife moans about me "singing too loudly". I'd have a good go at that! ;-D

Yep everyone heard the Northam break into a 'Jose Fonte baby' just after he totally f^%&d up. A welcome change to when we used to get on the backs of players a few years back - long may it continue. Golden Balls Posted 21 October, 2011 Share Posted 21 October, 2011 Atmosphere in the Kingsland corner was better than normal. It was louder than usual, but I wish they would realise that the slow 'Oh when the Saints..' goes twice through before the clapping starts. To be honest, its not just them, loads seem to find it impossible to sing it right, plus there are always those morons that try and clap throughout it. eelpie Posted 21 October, 2011 Share Posted 21 October, 2011 As the thread theme is good comments about us, and not our comments on West Ham, I treasure the write up in The Times which ended: " Southampton not only added three points, they gained credibility. The club are big enough for the Premier League, and for the first time in a long while, it looks as if the team are worthy as well." That's good enough for me. (Yet if we had drawn or been beaten by West Ham, you bet the comment would have been the opposite. Beating West Ham won't on its own be enough to guarantee promotion, but it is an important milestone for us, and more journos who have previously been dismissive are taking notice.
