Deano6 Posted 19 October, 2011 Share Posted 19 October, 2011 Let's call a spade a spade. The attendance today was 32,150. They announced it as such at HT, claiming it as a record. Then someone pointed out that the record is actually 32,151 (v Arsenal in 2003) so they found homeless Harry and crack-head Carol in the carpark, let them in and called it 32,152. Booo to all those fans who will realise that they CAN make it every week, and will probably be ST holders, but only when we get back into the prem. That's the nature of football supporters; it's not unique to Saints and will keep on happening. Personally I don't know why people moan about it so much; if you enjoy going every week then go every week. It shouldn't be used as a badge of honour to criticise others who don't want to in this league, but might choose to in a league above. I've said all along that an average attendance over the season of anywhere around 25,000 would be a really great achievement, and it would seem we're pretty well on course for that, so no reason for complaints here. Saint Lindford Posted 19 October, 2011 Share Posted 19 October, 2011 Trouble is though I doubt there were actually 32,152 in the ground as there were quite a few empty seats near us as STH that I know did not go for one reason or another and other seats that just were not sold. Could be they were sold but like the season ticket holders they could not attend for one reason or another. Valid point but why are they then included in the 'attendance'. Surely the very meaning of the word means you are there, if not then you did not attend and should not be counted. All very pedantic I know. That is 500+ empty seats Don't forget that the segregation netting takes up a few hundred seats, 40 rows x 9 or 10 seats wide isn't far short of those "missing" 500. Gemmel Posted 19 October, 2011 Share Posted 19 October, 2011 I know I'm going to get some stick for this but, when the margins of success and failure are so fine and the significant efforts made to get 0.00000001% (Diet, training regeime, kids schooling sorted out, wives made to feel at home etc.) extra out of the players, or little mind games to get some tiny advantage, or only watering the end of the pitch you are attacking or a players encouraging the fans to crank it up etc etc. we have to believe that it all helps..... So why oh why did they announce it during the game it was a record attendance. The West Ham fans were quiet and any fan that knows anything about football knew what was going to come back..... and right on cue, the whole West Ham end erupts into a minute or so's worth of singing. It came to nothing and we won.... but if that spurred them on by any tiny tiny tiny amount, it was a stupid thing to do and should have been left to the end of the game. Sour Mash Posted 19 October, 2011 Share Posted 19 October, 2011 I had 2 unused children's season tickets last night. Evening games are too late for little ones. Could see a few empty seats dotted around in the chapel. That's the problem with the free/very cheap kids tickets - people are more likely to buy them even when they know they won't always be used and it makes it hard for there to really be a full house - I don't think last night was the biggest attendance at St Marys. Doesn't help that Middlesbrough is in one of the poorest areas of the country, hardest-hit by the recession. Their away numbers are quite impressive, though. Who do you count exactly, just paying spectators,or do you count club employees, youth players, assistant coaches, journalists, commentators and what have you? I bet if you counted the actual number of people inside a football stadium at any one time it wouldn't be the official attendance figure.
