Attendance

Let's call a spade a spade. The attendance today was 32,150.

They announced it as such at HT, claiming it as a record. Then someone pointed out that the record is actually 32,151 (v Arsenal in 2003) so they found homeless Harry and crack-head Carol in the carpark, let them in and called it 32,152.

Maybe the 'two' got cut off by our awful PA system?

Edit: or not, as they were still saying stuff about how good it was after...

Hm, ah well, in any case still a bloody good turnout for a cold tuesday night.

The 8000 who will be back for premier league games thought they'd come along to see if they can still find SMS. One bloke asked me if I could point him towards the 'northen end'. FFS

Yeah that's right mate - booo to all those fans who can't make every game, rather they'd stay away and keep the attendance down to the 20k die hard locals

I didn't exactly say that. Booo to all those fans who will realise that they CAN make it every week, and will probably be ST holders, but only when we get back into the prem.

Don't get me wrong, it was great seeing the ground full, just a shame it'll be back to 24k for the next few.

That's the nature of football supporters; it's not unique to Saints and will keep on happening.

Personally I don't know why people moan about it so much; if you enjoy going every week then go every week. It shouldn't be used as a badge of honour to criticise others who don't want to in this league, but might choose to in a league above.

I've said all along that an average attendance over the season of anywhere around 25,000 would be a really great achievement, and it would seem we're pretty well on course for that, so no reason for complaints here.

Trouble is though I doubt there were actually 32,152 in the ground as there were quite a few empty seats near us as STH that I know did not go for one reason or another and other seats that just were not sold.

But the STH's have already paid for that seat so should be included whether they turn up or not and as for the other "empty" seats, you know for fact they were not sold? Could be they were sold but like the season ticket holders they could not attend for one reason or another.

^ really? The only empty seats that I saw were in the director's box.

Trust me there were empty seats in rows AA, BB and CC in block 20.

Didnt see any empty seats at all...

See above.

Valid point but why are they then included in the 'attendance'. Surely the very meaning of the word means you are there, if not then you did not attend and should not be counted. All very pedantic I know.

What was the published attendance when England played at SMS. Have to think that would have sold out, and with less netting too?

How many rows/columns(?) were netted off last night?

I also thought that might have been higher but I looked it up this morning and it was only 32,095.

Of course there will be the odd seats vacant. It was not a utter and complete sell out. The capacity of SMS is 32689. That is 500+ empty seats

Don't forget that the segregation netting takes up a few hundred seats, 40 rows x 9 or 10 seats wide isn't far short of those "missing" 500.

I know I'm going to get some stick for this but, when the margins of success and failure are so fine and the significant efforts made to get 0.00000001% (Diet, training regeime, kids schooling sorted out, wives made to feel at home etc.) extra out of the players, or little mind games to get some tiny advantage, or only watering the end of the pitch you are attacking or a players encouraging the fans to crank it up etc etc. we have to believe that it all helps.....

So why oh why did they announce it during the game it was a record attendance. The West Ham fans were quiet and any fan that knows anything about football knew what was going to come back..... and right on cue, the whole West Ham end erupts into a minute or so's worth of singing.

It came to nothing and we won.... but if that spurred them on by any tiny tiny tiny amount, it was a stupid thing to do and should have been left to the end of the game.

I thought the same. It should be announced at the end, although it was nice to actually have the attendance announced for once.

I guess we all know what you're saying... it'll be like 1945 next season, you can turn to your neighbour in the next seat and say "Where were you in the dark and dismal days of League 3, Chum"

Camp followers all so ******** to the lot of them and guess what, ALL the corporate seats were full again last night.

Ah, well! we know who we are don't we. Salt of the bloody earth!

I had 2 unused children's season tickets last night. Evening games are too late for little ones.
Could see a few empty seats dotted around in the chapel. That's the problem with the free/very cheap kids tickets - people are more likely to buy them even when they know they won't always be used and it makes it hard for there to really be a full house - I don't think last night was the biggest attendance at St Marys.

Slightly off topic, but everytime I see Middlesbrough on the telly their ground looks more like the proverbial County Cricket ground in the middle of April.

I suppose their fans aren't as happy with their league position as they might be if they'd just come from the Third Division.

It always seemed empty when they were in the premiership too tbh

Doesn't help that Middlesbrough is in one of the poorest areas of the country, hardest-hit by the recession. Their away numbers are quite impressive, though.

I agree. Silly time to announce it last night, and why have they stopped announcing it routinely at the end of each game as they used to?

Definitely announced in the ground as 32,150, but the BBC and other sites that use the Press Association/DataCo match data now say 32,152.

i genuinely think they realised it wasn't actually a record and so added a couple to make it so, therefore being able to use the "record attendance" in the reports etc.

Spookily beating the previous record by one!

That's one (1)

Nah, I don't believe it either.

"Attendance" at football matches must be a pretty vague quantity anyway. Who do you count exactly, just paying spectators,or do you count club employees, youth players, assistant coaches, journalists, commentators and what have you? I bet if you counted the actual number of people inside a football stadium at any one time it wouldn't be the official attendance figure.

Ta!

So after 6 home games we are averaging 25310.

Last season after the first 6 homes (ok we were 13th then but on the way up) we were averaging 20,801.

That's a pretty healthy increase of almost 22% over the same stagelast season IMO

Our season average last year was 22161, and I reckon if we are still in the top 6 after christmas we will be getting 27k+

Its going to be like the poe vault world record which kept on being bettered by 1 cm. Each time there is a new record there is more publicity.

there will probably be another 48 records between this attendance and 32,200!!
