Saints 1 West Ham 0 - Post Match Reactions

The thing that niggled me before the game was the link someone posted on here to the west ham fans forum, one of their lot was saying "they knock it around well but wont be able to cope with big sam's hoofball

I read that thread too. I was surprised at the lack of any real insight from the posters. It was all basically "We will win because we are WHU and used to be a premier side"

Gobby londoners, I'm glad we disillusioned them. Outplayed them, did to them what they used to do when they were good, and they really cant argue it. I might have a look at their forum tomorrow just to see what they made of it.

Just back from the game. Superb atmosphere. Saints deserved the win although I always felt West Ham had an equaliser in them so nail biting stuff towards the end.

Our 'near miss' passing out of our own penalty area gives me heart palpitations a lot of the time but I guess I can live with that if we keep winning :-)

Also, what was Harding playing? I didn't really get what he was doing... was he an attacking winger today or what?!

Played on the left side of a midfield diamond. Put himself about a bit, and was probably brought on to give the team shape a little more balance in the closing stages.

Didn't do much wrong.

Nobody's really mentioned Schneiderlin but I thought he had an excellent, if game - the number of bouncing second balls he chested down, got under control and then distributed cleanly and efficiently really kept us ticking along. With another player, those balls would have either been lost or smashed clear.

Yep, he did well. He does a job that goes unnoticed alot of the time, but he's very effective in how he plays. Technically he's unbelievably gifted.

It's pretty much spot on.

Rubbish

United, their last conquerors here, have perfected the technique of winning when playing badly and Adkins’ side — promisingly for their hopes of converting this start into promotion — proved last night that they could also be masters of that art.

We didn't play badly at all. We were the better team and tried to play football. They also never mentioned our second goal.

Agree with you.

We may not have played as attractive and pretty as we usually do...but we were incredibly effective in what we did. In fact this performance pleases me more in some aspects, as it shows we're not just a 1 trick pony. We can stand up to teh long ball powerful teams, and have a good hold of these games too. I did think it was close tonight, evenly matched for a bit, but we were the only side interested in getting it down and shaded it in that respect.

Just got back, missed the first 15 minutes because of crazy traffic around southampton and nowhere to park but seems like I didn't miss much.

First of all, I thought the atmosphere was great, was a real buzz tonight and it was awesome. Great to see a full house, including a full away end.

I thought we played well, not amazingly, but pretty well. Overdid a few passes around the back which almost got us in trouble but a lot of the time some of our passing was brilliant to watch, West Ham struggled with it no doubt.

I thought when West Ham got it down and played, they were on a level playing field with us, god knows why they didn't do it more. Big Sam seemed to be on a one man mission to lose them the game.. Taking Carew off with 15 to go for O'Brien.. Madness.

Ratings:

Davis - 2 very good saves and did everything he needed to do - 8

Richardson - Offered most of our width down the right - 7

Hooiveld - Carew seemed to give him a hard time although he wasnt much of a goal threat. Scored the winner and was pretty solid though. - 7

Fonte - Not as assured as I he can be, solidy enough though even though his mistake almost let Baldock in. - 7

Fox - Didn't get forward too much - 6

Guly - Was awesome, pulled the strings - 8

Chaplow - Busy, tenacious, my MOTM. - 8

Spiderman - Good game - 7

Hammond - Ditto - 7

Connelly - A bit quiet - 6

Lambert - One of his quieter games too - 6

I think we're OK against powerful teams - fortunately, WHU didn't have much pace as I still think its our defensive achilles heel.

This was my reading of the game too. Very pleased we can mix it as well as pass the ball around.

Just back. We feking dominate them. Yet they were not a push-over.

Let me just say that again:

WE FEKING DOMINATED THEM. (but they were not a push over)

again?

WE OUTCLASSED THEM (but they were not a push over)

my God. That has been the most comprehensive 1-0 win at SMS since, well, since the Dell.

They truly had nothing. We smothered them. I never was biting my nails. The odd corner went their way, sure, but our lads had it well covered. Ok, so we only had one goal. Don't let that fact take away from the fact that we utterly, completely dominated for 83 minutes. The other 7 minutes we had to defend.

That was a clinical way of proving ourselves on the 'big stage'.

As if a full house at the Super St Mary Stadium ever needed an introduction...

Onwards!! Onwards!!! To READING!! Here we come!!!

Great fun winding up the West Ham fans from the bottom of the Itchen North, they were absolutely livid! If any of the 3 blokes winding up 'fatty' for the last half hour of the game are reading this, I owe you all a pint.

Childishness aside, the West Ham fans were excellent until we scored. Best away fans i've seen at SMS in a while.

Sod it, my face hurts I'm grinning so much! Why didn't Cork play from the beginning, haven't seen any reasons given. I'm now off to discharge my rechargeable batteries... :-)))

I'm going to be so frisky at footie training tomorrow evening: I promise to wear a Saints shirt.:-)

Winning does give you a buzz , doesn't it ;)

Was at the match took two of my boys two (I think we three made the record) must say I was a lot more confident watching the match live than I ever am on the web. We have one hell of a squad now all 14 today played fantastically and we are missing so many too.

Hammers played Allerdyce /Bolton style just pump the ball to Carew(read Davis at Bolton) our defence was great our midfield and passing game was awesome (especially first half when the poor old hammers just couldn't get the ball. The last 10 min or so were "squeaky bum time" when we dropped deep and invited pressure. Guly playeed will and should have finished when played in after a brilliant passing move. De Ridder's disallowed goal was class and should have stood if only the ref had been a bit slower with the whistle.

Great to see the stadium full but missed having Alpine's "we are doomed act " ala Fraser of Dads army!

What has happened to Chaplow!?!? Last season I could have sworn I saw him giving the ball away every other pass and generally not adding that much. This season he is absolutely everywhere, playing within his limitations, passing the ball well and intelligently. Well done that man.

I agree his control may not be as good as some of the others but his ball winning and break up play was top form

While I would not necessarily make him MoM, Schneiderlin, like Oakley before him, does his job so well that no-one notices -always available as an outlet, strong under a challenge, ready to make a lay-off or fire it long as required. What I like about us at the moment is that we have midfielders with different strengths that gives Adkins options for different kinds of games. I was surprised by his choice of midfield for tonight. But he got it right.

It is a treat to spend the morning here in Tokyo reading all these comments and look at the Championship table. What a win. Thank you, also, to those who posted the links to the match reports in the Telegraph and Guardian.

The Telegraph says we "clung on" whereas The Guardian comments "They [saints] are comfortable when confronted by desperate opponents."

LoL!!

Typical right wing fascist propaganda. We weren't clinging on to anything! They might have been.

What a load of old twaddle. We utterly controlled that park.

Clinging on... my arse. tell that journo **** to get away from his comfortable north london mecca and come see the the mighty Saints play.

Clung on! what a feking joke!

Well, this statement must be in the top ten of something or other, but it probably deserves a category all of it's own.

And now I'm trying to work out what I would do if I did have more than one penis.

Not be sure whether you were coming or going...?

We were 'clinging on' to a certain degree towards the end.

Well, I was sitting there for the last 10 minutes with my head in my hands praying we could keep them out.

Maybe not 'clinging' but they had chances to pull it level towards the end.

Haha!! I've just taken a peek at the WHU forum too. Still no real indication that they think they may be the second best team at the moment. Still full of themselves for the most part. Overall, not much of the wrist slitting that goes on with some of the posters here. Largely, they still regard themselves as the chosen ones. That may be the case, but there are a lot of games to play yet. :)

They're deluded hoof ball merchants they were a very poor team just goes to show being the best on paper counts for squat. Nolan must be the most overated player in the league if he plays like he did last night all the time.

Just woken up.

Did that REALLY happen last night?

Reading this thread it seems as if some form of Reverse 28 Days Later type Infection has broken out on here, sort of an anti-rage.

What is the biggest shock?

Is it that we are 5 points clear?

Is it that we out footballed the supposed Academy of Football?

Is it that our Manager really does have a Midas touch with his team selections?

Or is it the fact that we have FINALLY caught up with the Squad, and are now starting to BELIEVE.

Yep, I think that's it. The euphoria brought on by Shock. This IS real, this IS Saints that this magic blend has happened to, not someone else for a change.

And most importantly, our reactions are not arrogant, none of that WHU we are playing like this "because we are Southampton", we are playing like this because we have a true team - of players, management and fans again.

Goddamit, that table STILL looks good this morning

Hammers haven't got their front 2 working well yet and they played too deep first half which enabled us to get the ball around. Very pleased with the continued confidence the players have to knock the ball on the deck, at pace and always looking for a run or option. Not too many chances for us as they defended deeper, but it was only a matter of time. They were better 2nd half (why didn't Noble play from the start?) but we were never afraid to get in behind them on the break - think we look more threatening when attacking like this. Only trouble was after the late changes we sat too deep in the last 10, taking time to adjust to the formation change. Still, we could easily have been 3 up by then, so it's no real grumble. Superb stuff again. Very busy next 3 weeks with 5/6 games and against some good teams. Let's hope we can continue this fine form.

Slightly negative thought of the day...

The only trouble with 'flying high' at this time of the season is that most of us have probably gone from a "I'd be content with a decent top half finish this season" mindset to a "I'd be disappointed now if we don't get promoted after that start" mindset.

The bar of expectation has been raised. (not a bad thing per se)

Toughest game we've had so far this season, and a great result. We were noticeably cautious through midfield and I think Nigel set them up for keeping WHU out and nicking a goal or 2 rather than trying to edge a 7 goal thriller, and we managed that perfectly. I felt we lacked a bit of creativity without Lallana and Cork, but west ham closed us down so quickly it was always going to be tough to play our possession game. I thought we could have counter attacked a bit quicker at times, but they were obviously under instruction not to commit too many forward.

Thought Jos and Fonte were fantastic, apart from fonte's slip. From where I was stood I was sure that shot was flying into the top corner. Thought it was great to see a proper defensive display, we haven't had a game like that this season, and I'm so glad that proper football prevailed over ****ty hoofballing.

Massive confidence boost, and on to Reading to get a higher number in our 'away wins' column.

Agreed, I'm not his biggest fan, as I think he often gives away cheap free kicks, but I thought he was excellent. The competition between the four central midfielders has really paid off with all of them putting in top class performances this year.

My take on last night

Only one team was interested in playing football and winning this game (and it wasn't WHU)

jos had his best game in a saints shirt MOTM for me

Jose had an off day IMO

Chappers was great -so much better than last season

^%5*&%$£ ref for robbing SDR of his goal

West ham really aren't very good considering the players they have

Great attendence -but the atmosphere was a bit flat I thought. I put down to both sets of fans Knowing this was a big match and being nervous

Harding at LM??? - bit wierd though he put himself about.

We can't counter attack because we have no pace going forward. Once West Ham woke up to that in the 2nd half they realised they could throw half their team forward with little fear of being caught on the break. As withthe Derby game I thought we were set up with a lack of creativity and cutting edge. If Lallana is out, then De Ridder should play. Both West Ham and Derby were happy for us to knock it around slowly in-front of their back 4, with little threat of a cutting edge.

Most amusing moment of the night for me was when my West Ham supporting friend leapt of of his seat (block 14) shouting "YESSSSS!!" when he thought West Ham's effort after Fonte's slip-up had gone in.

Cue a furtive look around at thousands of Saints fans staring quizzically at his reaction to a lucky Saints escape...

No, no no, not about me again.... Big Sam!

Hope Big Sam liked the present we gave him last night.

Let's face it, a Footballing Lesson can be really expensive these days. Big well done to everyone who chipped in towards that gift last night.

How YOU feeling this morning Sammy boy?
