Saints 1 West Ham 0 - Post Match Reactions

Cracking game of football which we deserved to win.

My one niggling doubt is we don't have enough cover upfront - with Barnard out long term we simply need another option on the bench. Connolly will not last the season.

Chaplow MoM for me tonight he was everywhere but Hooiveld a close second. Fonte made one bad error but had a good all round game.

West Ham flattered to deceive - lots of huff and puff but really did not look dangerous.

Besides us having the better team IMO, I think Sam got out-managed today. He shot his mouth off about tactics while Nigel stayed quiet - even though he had quite a significant surprise planned (not starting Cork).

If someone had said we'd take four points from the last two games without Lallana I wouldn't have believed them. With every passing week it seems more likely that we are the "real deal" - and with money to spend in January.

Although I can see NA rotating the squad a little to keep up player confidence, I felt it was done more to surprise Sam A. If that was the case, then it worked as SA made a VERY early sub in the first half.

I read Taylor was struggling with an injury before the game so not sure if tactics or what but Big Sam got it wrong...especially replacing Carew in the last 10 as we didnt have the aerial worry.

What a superb game. It truly had everything! Hoofball, slick passing, some great chances, some great saves, some near calamities (Fontes slip, Kelv kicking the ball against Carew which could have gone anywhere), some whacky refereeing decisions, superb defending and a cracking atmosphere! An absolute pleasure to watch and be a part of.

Great to set a new attendance record too. Great effort Saints.

I loved Kelvins reaction to his save from Nobles free kick. He went *****ng nuts, thought he was going to lay someone out!

I think KD has a very big influence on the team at the moment. The other players just love him. Our comraderie is our best player, and KD seems to be the centre of it.

EDIT: I suppose, for the sake of full disclosure I should mention that I am pretty well Sh!tfaced right now.

Either our "back from the game" posters and the Solent crew saw a different match or the guy who wrote this is just another typical London-based journalist:

A pretty impressive performance tonight and although not too many clear cut chances we bossed the game for large periods. The midfield was full of running and the defence resillient. Not our usual sparkle up front, but that was the only real downside.

Have to say that for the obvious talented players that West ham have at their disposal the tactics and spirit of the side seemed to be very poor. Very much route one, which we dealt with admirably. They looked a big side, but for the main we stifled their long ball game.

Davies -8- A couple of good saves, one very good

Richardson -7- Solid at the back, pushed up as well, but apprehansive to get the ball in the box

Hooiveld -8- Solid game, bullet header, much better

Fonte -7- Performed well against route one hoofball, but almost cost us when he went airballing on the halfway line in the 2nd half

Fox -8- Best game I have seen him play. Very confident on the ball

Spiderman -7- Played alright, but not outstanding

Hammond -9- Bossed the game and loads of energy. Eclipsed Nolan by some way

Chaplow -8.5- Full of running, pushed on when we had the ball and got amongst them

Guly -7- Missed what looked like a sitter, but always provided an outlet, just wanted a bit more from him.

Connoly -7- OK, but nto as good as I have seen him. First touch let him down tonight, but always looking for the ball.

Lambert -8- Up against a robust defence but always willing to provide an outlet.

Great result it was a nightmare f5-ing on here & the bbc videprinter at work, really nervous last 20-mins. The good thing is 4-points against top 3 sides all done without arguably our best player, must say I was surprised to see Cork on the bench as well. But NA produced the right blend to win the match. Its so GREAT being a Saints fan at the moment 5-points clear at the top it just doesn't get much better than this does it.

Just hope that WHU supporting troll on talk sport the moose enjoyed the thrashing West Ham gave us tonight PMSL.

'We clung on' and fails to mention a perfectly good goal disallowed that would have doubled the scoreline... Useless drivel from a journalist. Occupational hazard...

O Crap!!! According to the Telegraph, we LOST!!!

I'm all upset now!!! :(

West Ham looked clueless at times, did we make them look that way or did Sam get it so wrong?

Had that been a boxing match the ref would have stopped it before halftime.

Well done Chappers.

I was right in line with the backheader and for me it was heading for the inside of our post all the way until the last metre - I guess you make your own luck.

Had they equalised there would have been a steward's enquiry.

What a night.

The days of shaky late capitulations are long gone - we now have steel, several leaders - and we scrap when we need to.

On course for that top ten finish ;)

And as for that record attendance, you can take one off because that bloke from the Telegraph was obviously somewhere else.

Just in and had my beer. So good to see Alpine enjoying the result and Dalek thinking his idea of 17th may be presumptuous.

Well I really thought West Ham would give us a run for our money and maybe, even, grab a draw. I was so wrong, they played very poorly and Carew was rarely useful due to our CBs keeping him in check. The more I see of Hoovield the more I like and I feel that with Fonte this could be a great pairing as they seem to read each other and, when Fonte faffed up, Jos was there to sheperd the player away for only a tame attempt at goal.

We had to work at grinding this win out.

Guly and Connolly were both working very hard as was 'Mad Dog' Chaplow, my MOTM.

Brilliant attendance, brilliant atmosphere and to see us 5 points clear is really exciting.

Let's hope the attendances build quickly now to a regular sell out because with the fans now singing from all angles, yes even us Chapelites!, you can see it helping the team.

A great evening's entertainment and my cautious optimism is becoming less cautious with every performance like this.

Completely agree. If Barny was fit he'd have been on after 60 minutes for connolly, who was just getting pushed off the ball.

I'd say West Ham are the best team to visit St. Mary's so far this season, though we deserved to win still. But don't be too harsh on them, we really had to work for this victory in ways we haven't against other teams.

I thought everyone played well. Guly had a slow start, but got into it. I was disappointed to hear Fonte getting some stick on the radio, when apart from one howler, he was excellent, especially in the air. Cork was a bit not raring to go when he was gone, almost looked not strong enough at times, but got into it, but I guess he is a flair player and not a muscles one and boy were some of the West Ham players massive!

Special mention to Davis for his saves! Deserved win though.

I'm a real Cork fan, but he was terrible tonight. Rabbit in the headlights performance who couldn't get in to the game. Must be hard coming on late in the game with the opposition pushing for an equaliser, but he was still very bad.

Sometimes I wish I could get on a spaceship and fly off to a faraway planet and hang out with aliens and experience something incredible.

But instead I have to watch 11 ****s get done by a man that's actually called Jos Hooiveld. Useless set of bastards.

I'd been planning to let the lads watch 'License To Drive' on the coach on the coach on the way home but **** them. They don't deserve it.

In retrospect, I see why Schneiderlin started and Cork didn't. I think Cork would have been pushed out of the match unfortunately, not his game today. And I am a massive Cork fan, he has made a big difference this year.

Got back about 10-15 mins ago and am still Buzzing after that Great 1-0 win which puts us 5 points ahead which is Good!

Was a Great goal by Hooiveld and I thought that Chaplow was MOTM for me with others close behind as well!

And was also Good to see St Marys get a Record attendance which topped the evening off!

Roll On Reading On Saturday Next!

I must say I was perplexed when I saw Cork was not on the pitch and assumed he was injured, but fair dos to Adkins as he obviously thought about what we were up against (some big units playing hoofball) and played a team to counteract this.

Would have him back in against Reading though!!

WHU fans will not put up with football like that, or should i say a complete lack of football from them.

They put us under pressure with constant long balls into Carew, but Jos had him covered most of the evening - he was absolutely superb alongside Fonte.

I thought WHU were dull, not much to them at all. They didn't have much spark, pace or any real quality - it was just a lump up top, let a big guy get his head on it and then scuffle around for the loose bits. We dealt with it pretty confortably most of the night to be honest. They didn't allow us the freedom to play as other teams have, which was to be expected, but we still did play some great stuff when we had the chance.

Chappers was terrific, so much drive and energy. He's totally left his Preston days behind him and is back to the play that West Brom paid £2.5m for. Quality.

I thought Fox was terrific too, I knew it would happen...a few months under Adkins and co and his defensive lapses will be gone, as we've seen. But we've still retained his quality crossing and his neat ability on the ball, well worth the money on that showing.

Overall I'd say we just about edged it, but it was a close game - 2 pretty close sides in all honesty, and I didn't think I'd be saying that 12 months ago.

I also didn't think I'd see us 5 points clear at the top of the flaming Championship. Amazing start, although I think the start is over now...and this is turning into what could be an amazing season.

Really great atmosphere and chuffed with the win.

Mate drove me home in his Porche Boxster to celebrate (wow!), just got over the Itchen bridge before police closed it because of a jumper (threatening to do it), did the rest of you get delayed long?

Kelvin and Jos - joint MOM

#we are Southampton, we're top of the league#

I will never, ever get tired of singing that, it's ****ing surreal. This is Saints FFS!

I once asked a Man U supporting mate whether he got bored with winning, now I understand why he looked at me like I was mental.

Chaplow MOTM for me. Kelv made some critical saves and Hooiveld was immense, he made Fonte look shaky which shows how well he played.

Brilliant win against a big horrible team. Jos superb at the back and what a header. Chappers worked his socks off and made sure we didn't get overrun in midfield.

We could and should have scored two or three but grinding out a one nil against probably our biggest rivals will do for me.

If west ham are supposed to be the next best team in the division, I'm starting to get confident. We simply made them look ridiculous. Nigel played a strong back line to counteract their hoofball and it worked. The thing that niggled me before the game was the link someone posted on here to the west ham fans forum, one of their lot was saying "they knock it around well but wont be able to cope with big sam's hoofball"...ffs, this is west ham, I'm fifty years old and for as long as I can remember they were always supposed to be the team that play attractive, flowing, passing football come what may. They were cr*p tonight, I feel sorry for their sell-out away fans who made the trip, fair play to them but they are wasted on allardayces team of hoofers.

Some of the stuff we played was just sublime. Our passing and movement was breathtaking at times, and all without Adam and (initially) Corky. I thought Guly and Chappers were absolutely superb, and Fonte....well it almost goes without saying. Ecstatic at the moment, what a time to be a Saints fan. Roll on Reading, on this showing we will take them apart!!

I agree. Yes we are doing great but we need a forward on the bench. We have players who can do a job as back up but no genuine forward. Get a loan in to help lambert and conners out.

What has happened to Chaplow!?!? Last season I could have sworn I saw him giving the ball away every other pass and generally not adding that much. This season he is absolutely everywhere, playing within his limitations, passing the ball well and intelligently. Well done that man.
