krissyboy31 Posted 17 October, 2011 Share Posted 17 October, 2011 The Premier League has stated that the FA would veto this proposal. Didn't the FA say that when the PL was first formed? TBH The PL or the teams in it are more powerful than the FA and if they want it to happen, it will IMO.
SNSUN Posted 17 October, 2011 Share Posted 17 October, 2011 Back when the top four were the top four - Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, there was talk of them breaking away into a European Super League and leaving the rest of us behind. I still reckon something like that will happen, although perhaps it'll be Man City or Spurs challenging for a spot. While I don't see this happening - Promotion and Relegation is what makes the competition amazing, I've always maintained the Championship is the best league. I would LOVE to be back in the Premiership, but I would definitely miss this league. Nobody has a God given right to be in the Premiership - I do find Arsenal's position early in the season mildly amusing, but money is ruining this game. I will always be a Saints fan, but I would consider going back to grass roots to support a local team somewhere down the leagues where money makes little difference if Saints got involved in all this. (Which hopefully they won't!)
Amazing Hangover Posted 17 October, 2011 Share Posted 17 October, 2011 Didn't the FA say that when the PL was first formed? TBH The PL or the teams in it are more powerful than the FA and if they want it to happen, it will IMO. Too right. If the owners can see that the money is big enough, then it will happen. The FA (and FIFA etc) can do sweet FA about it. Out the FA Cup? ... Fine, Players can no longer play for england?... so what, Out of the so called champions league?... well that might hurt a bit... but it would only take about three years to convince the big boys in europe to bail out too. It would also be a 'By Invatation Only' league. I can't see Wigan being in and Leeds being out. Every fan (I mean fan) in this country would hate it, but we are a (relatively) minor revenue stream. Asia is where its at. I have just read 'Feaver Pitch' again, and Nick Hornby is holding forth (rightly) against the newly formed premiership, saying the fans wont stand for it, the prices (he was complaining about £8.50 to watch Arsenal!) the stadiums will be empty etc. Well he got that wrong, and there are enough of the 'I love my Club, Screw Everything Else' brigade to make the non-relegation thing feasable. The owners will have had their minions checking this already. Basically in a dog eats dog world (or see 'Kill Your Freinds' by John Niven for a better quote! - its about music, but footballs getting there) the rich get richer and the poor..... well, the're the poor, basically. Football fans (as opposed to international consumers or customers or whatever) will have to hope that there is enough about us to organise an alternative league. There probably would be given that most Conference and League 2 teams can pull in 5-6000 on a good day. Higher up it would still be a strong competition. I like many here would hope that Saints (Club,Team and Fans) would have enough class to tell any closed shop where to go.
Professor Posted 17 October, 2011 Share Posted 17 October, 2011 Could be a good thing as long as they play the games overseas as well. Clubs could play in the country of their owners and adopt new names. We'd be shot of the PL and could get back to something more like proper English football. Golden Balls Posted 17 October, 2011 Share Posted 17 October, 2011 None of that would happen tho. The demand for tickets, tv and shirts would be the same. What would happen is that some non PL (2 tier?) teams would cease to exist and some would go semi pro. Given that the support for many L1/L2 is dwindling to negligible levels already this may be no bad thing. Most kids in L1/L2 towns like Oldham support one of the Big 4 anyway so what's the issue. Having no promotion and relegation will have no affect whatsoever on the fan levels of PL teams. Yes it would. If there are only 4 teams there with something to play for and the rest dont have to worry about relegation, the interest will go down, meaning what I said would happen, would happen. You say kids who support teams like Oldham also support one of the big 4....well that maybe true. However kids do not pay for anything into football and when they grow up they tend to realise you pick 1 team. If one of their teams they support is local, they'll generally choose that. But on the plus side, it would help player development. If the result doesn't matter, managers can risk playing academy players. Also, the FA Cup would become the most important competition for most of the PL clubs.

derry Posted 18 October, 2011 Share Posted 18 October, 2011 It is the FA Premier League and the League itself is saying that the FA will veto it.
ray kemish Posted 19 October, 2011 Share Posted 19 October, 2011 Unlikely to happen - but isn't it worrying to think that in order to prevent it we could be dependent on the FA (weak and corrupt) or FIFA (just corrupt). A simple rule change by FIFA outlining what constitutes a competitive league model (i.e current system) backed up with an edict stating players (from any country) could not represent their country unless they played in a competitive league, would prevent it happening. Some of the current mercenaries may be happy to take the money and not play for their countries but most I think would not. In time, competitive leagues would become stronger, a closed shop would appear irrelevant if there were no International progression and it would just fade away. St_Tel49 Posted 19 October, 2011 Share Posted 19 October, 2011 If this ever happened I would never watch another premiership game again - live, on TV or anywhere. If every FOOTBALL fan did this the value of the league to Sky would decline and the revenues would dry up. Sadly there are a lot of tossers out there who don't care enough about the game as a whole to make a sacrifice if their team were one of the lucky ones.
