Allardyce on Saints

On Goals on Sunday this morning one of the guests was Sam Allardyce, and he was talking about their season so far and the conversation stumbled onto tactics, and he said he always believes it is best to play 2 up front. But talking about Southampton he said this was not the case, here are some quotes:

"You always play two up top, it gives us the best chance to win, but it doesn't against Southampton."

"Their strength lies in midfield and their service to Lambert so if we drop a forward & put one more in midfield we can benefit."

"If you can break down Southampton's midfield and stop them passing the ball around you can defeat them, but it won't be easy for us on Tuesday."

Seems like Hammers might be coming in a 4-5-1 in that case, would you match them or stick to 4-4-2?

Personally I would bring Chaplow in for Connolly and match up to them.

Just thought it might be of interest to anyone who didn't see the show.

Sam's being a bit disingenuous - they've been playing 4-5-1 all season.

Not sure if its a case of cutting out service to Lambert either as if he leads the line for us.

Quite happy if they go 4-5-1. It gives us more scope to play from the back and do our thing.

WHU fans have been getting on Big Sam's back for playing 4-5-1 for most of the season. They played 4-4-2 yesterday and won 4-0, and that will have their fans calling for that formation all of the time. The fact that Blackpool gifted them their goals will probably not be noticed.

Not that I care, surely we'll be playing our game and let them worry about how to keep us out.

**** defence, **** keeper and top flight midfield/striker...in terms of experience anyway. lots of goal threats. I don't rate Cole, but he seems good against us. Memories of that FCKING villa game in 2005. Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! fck off fck off fck off

The only one of their players I'd take is Nolan. Fact.

And finally, despite reservations over Kelvin, I wouldn't swap him for Green. I think they're very similar overall, and both better than Almunia, so shows Kelvin could have got close to the England squad if things had gone slightly differently for him.

Forgot they have Almunia! Lots of corners swung towards the GK please...

So Allardyce has openly discussed his tactics on tv just days before the game?Riiiiight...He's either an idiot or he's bluffing...
indeed...maybe he is just super confident they will win...seems an odd thing to do and completely the opposite of what we would do....we have no idea when a player in injured ffs..lol

The only way to stop them is by ambushing their bloody coach up the M3 somewhere

agree....lallana is the key though for a game like tuesday IMO

I doubt we will see Lallana on the pitch against WHU. With Connolly still not looking the sharpest I would definitely change things around, because if we fail to get control or even parity of the midfield, I think they will do us. Connolly was not tearing up trees on Saturday and it would make a lot of sense starting with something like 4411

Lambert

Guly

Fox Hammond Cork Chaplow

Harding Hooiveld Fonte Richardson(?)

Davis

With options to change it from the bench, we should at least still be in the game at half time and the attacking replacements would have the easier task against tired legs. Should we nick something I would be more than happy to grind this one out. If they get control of the midfield the damage may already be done at half time and there's no point in going defensive then. I am not sure where Adkins thinking is after the Derby summary. The referee said it would have been a penalty if they had not scored, so really don't understand the logic in us winning it but for the offside. I still feel we can win the game if we play smart, but I can easily see WHU compressing the middle, leaving us no space to play our passing game and being picked off as we were at Leicester. If we could not get the better of Derby with that line up, I really doubt we will get the better of WHU with the same team.

What ever, it's going to be a great evening of football with two good sides.

Wouldn't at all be surprised if it's

Almunia

Faubert Tomkins Reid McCartney

Lansbury Noble Nolan Collison Taylor

Carew

(if fit)

That's a Premiership quality midfield and attack, but they look a bit weak in defence. I reckon it will be more a case of us having to get service to the wings rather than passing through the middle on Tuesday, they will break up anything we try and put through our centre mids. They've got ex-Skate Papa Bouba Diop on the bench as well - I can see him coming on if they're ahead after an hour to sit in front of their defence.

This will be the hardest game we'll play this season I reckon, they're on fire at the moment but so are we. It'll be a cracking fixture for sure.

I think Big Sam is after a bluff with those throw away comments, He is not daft enough to give anything away on the telly and I think our Nigel is to wise to even consider those comments and will just do his own thing regardless of wether Big Sam plays 451 or 442. Nigel knows that if we perform to our best with whatever formation he plays we are more than capable of beating WHU at St Marys , Even without Adam, but I hope he is fit.

Discussing tactics in public means one of two things, it means that you are scared of the opposition or it means you are serious about wanting the opposition to change a winning formula. He is so **** scared that he cannot field a team good enough to beat Saints that he is playing mind games and failing. All a decent manager of a decent team (Top of the CCC for example) has to say about his plans is, we shall just carry on doing what we have been doing. That is like saying' Are you blind, just come and give us a game of football, we do OUR talking on the pitch.'

I don't know where everyone is getting it from, but they're really not that in form, and have been less than convincing according to their fans. I posted this on the build up thread:

How exactly are they bang in form? Yes, they just won a game 4-0, but Blackpool were **** poor and gifted them goals from shocking defending. Since they beat forest 4-1, they beat the skates by a single goal whilst conceding 3, drew 0-0 with Millwall, scraped past Posh 1-0 (both poor sides). They then lost at home to Ipswich and drew with Palace before the international break. That tells me they're not all that going forward, and can be suspect at the back.

West Ham have conceded in the last minute in two home games this season to lose the games. If they had held on for two draws they would have been joint top and unbeaten. As it is they are unbeaten away from home and only Borough have conceded less on their travels. Also they are top goalscorers away from home again along with us so all in all it makes for the toughest game for boh sides so far this season in my honest opinion.

I have to agree with Daren here:

"You always play two up top, it gives us the best chance to win, but it doesn't against Southampton." s****** s******

[/i]

"Their strength lies in midfield and their service to Lambert so if we drop a forward & put one more in midfield we can benefit."

Oh yes lordy lordy

"If you can break down Southampton's midfield and stop them passing the ball around you can defeat them, but it won't be easy for us on Tuesday."

These are my tactics, write then down Nigel, (laughs up sleeve)

On Match Day, "Here's my team sheet, 4-4-2. I'm sorry Nige, were you expecting 4-5-1? I suppose you coiuld change things 'alf time." He he he.

It's doesn't help me that not only dooes my boss support WHU, he looks like Sam Allerdice, (which helped me get laid once on a business trip to Cyprus, where I pretended to be the hooker Steve Thompson, with some overweight bimbo claiming to be an ex pop star). So win or lose, I lose.

But we'll win 3-1. And i'm putting money on that.
