West Ham build up

Well, That forum read was a bit comical really in terms of complacency. On paper they could well stuff us, but the Saints at the moment, while we have some good players, are running heavily on team spirit, and you just can't calculate the odds for that.

Saints at the moment remind me a little of Wimbledon's "Crazy gang" We can actually beat any team on the right day. We could also fall to a superior team on paper. It would be foolish to make a prediction on this one.

If we lose, it will be far from the end of the world for us and I won't be panicking. If we win, I'll probably just leave a stain in my pants that I won't want wifey to wash out.

Win, lose or draw....Bring it on!!! :D

But they don't have our secret weapon of nuns, weather reports and lucky fags to fall back on in the case of emergencys!!

I don't know how you worked that one out, plenty of teams have spent more than us.

doubt our squad is that expensive in this league

Davis £800k

Richardson £450k

Hooiveld Loan

Fonte £1m

Fox £1.8m

Lallana Youth

Cork £1m

Schneiderlin £1m

Guly Do Prado Undisclosed (but I bet it wasn't cheap)

Lambert £1m

Connolly Free

Then you also have...

De Ridder Undisclosed (and like with Guly I bet it wasn't cheap)

Harding Free

Dickson £250k

Puncheon £250k

Barnard £200k

Seaborne £200k

Butterfield Free

Jaidi Free

Chaplow £50k

Forte £200k

Hammond £400k

Saints had a £12m wage bill in their first season in League One according to the accounts, that is more than most Championship clubs! It will be a lot higher this season with all the new contracts handed out. A number of them will be on £20k+ p/w.

I reckon only West Ham, Birmingham and Leicester have a more expensively assembled squad than Saints for wages and fees combined.

That looks pretty cheap to me. You are forgetting we are in the Championship. Ipswich, Brighton, Derby and Portsmouth all spent more than us this summer. Teams like Hull and Burnley still have parachutes so will have decent size wage bills, plus there's Forest and Leeds.

2 players over £1 Million!!!! WOW!

It was widely reported that Guly was signed for £500k and all figures of SDR were around the same.

One of the most expensive squads... What a load of tosh.

Was at their game yesterday vs Blackpool. Thought they looked weak at the back (furthermore Tompkins went off injured), and Taylor wasn't oo impressive down the wing. However, Diop was quite solid in the middle, Carew was involved in a lot of link up play, and Baldocks movement was very impressive (however, he did have a tendancy to slip offside a lot). If we can contain the front two, then I can certainly see us getting something from the game.

I can also see Connolly scoring against his former club ;)

Second full house in 4-days - if the players can't be up for it then I am very concerned. WHU will try to stifle our passing game and hope we resort to direct hoof ball by-passing our midfield - but we are far from a one dimensional team and we will sort that out. Still think we look weak at the back - and if we start as slowly against WHU we will go one behind for sure. WHU will then shut up shop - and we will be under pressure to break down a 10-man defence - and probably get caught on the break. The first 10-mins are critical and if we score early I think we will boss the game. The longer it stays 0-0 I would imagine WHU will run out of steam by 75-mins and we take them apart with our superior fitness.

But then again what do I know?

It is the biggest game of the season thus far - it could be Leeds all over again! A big away following with expectations to take us apart - yet little old Southampton standing their ground, going toe to toe, and coming out victorious.

Bring it on - with or without Lallana I think we will be too strong at home for West Ham.

"Widely reported" where exactly?

Name some squads other than the three I mentioned that cost more and have a higher wage bill then?

Why do you think Fox and Cork are at Saints? Burnley have a tiny wage budget in comparison, they pay £10k p/w at most. Forest and Leeds squads didn't cost much to assemble and I doubt their wage budget is as high as Saints'.

Ipswich spent £1.5mill on Chopra, £1.1mill on Emmanual Thomas plus 240K on Cresswell, not to mention bringing in 9 players on frees (big wages) including the likes of Bowyer, Bullard, Ellington and Sonko.

Brighton spent over 4mill plus some on frees, Derby spent £2.9mill, Pompey over £4mill. Saints spent about £2.5mill (750K on Cork, 1.75 on Fox.

I doubt Cork was under £1m, plus you left out De Ridder, loan fee for Hooiveld and the numerous contract extensions/wage increases over the summer.

In any case, my original point was that Saints have one of the highest wage bills/transfer fee spends, this point still stands. Out of the 24 Championship teams Saints would be high on the list, that was my point.

West Ham were always the by word for attractive football for those of us with long memories.

Big Sam isn't that sort of manager and, as pointed out earlier, a fair chunk of their fan base, remembering their heritage, didn't like his appointment.

Like most football fans, if the team is winning, it's all good.

I've got friends coming down for the match, long time season ticket holders and I've advised that "silky football and towering individual skills may not be on Big Sam's agenda for the evening"

They have got players with some pedigree and they'll be dangerous.

Too close to call for me.

This reminds me of the thread about Barney, when I mentioned jokingly that I hoped the magistrates hadnt been to St Marys and heard the "he's short, he's f*cking hard" song. MLG came on and said, no we actually sing "he sure is f*cking hard". Several others pointed out his error, MLG came back on an hour later with all the stats on the height of our squad in order to prove conclusively that Barnard isnt really very short.

It will be like a good league one match then 10 men behind the ball? maybe big sam is looking to re-create Oldhams vintage performance at SMS two seasons ago.....

If he is that clever he'd be able to answer this question:

'Who is the forums most unpopular poster. Alpine or MLG?'

I'm probably not very popular myself with Dog at the moment, having drunkenly sent him a link that I hope like f*ck he didnt open in polite company. Or at all, for that matter.

Hope Saints are positive and attack West Ham from the start and don't show them too much respect as i think their defence is weak. Plenty of crosses/corners/free kicks fired into the box to test dodgy ex Arsenal keeper. West Ham look strong in midfield but the current Saints team is more resilient than Saints teams of the recent past i can see a hard thought win.

We need Hammond and Cork CM on Tuesday. Win that battle and I think we'll win the game. I'd play Guly and Lambert up top with De Ridder down the right because I really think we can get at them. I just hope Adkins gets his team selection spot on, because he needs to for this one.

Davis

Richardson

Fonte

Jos

Harding

De Ridder

Cork

Hammond

Fox

Lambert

Our place in the NPC will be secured by beating the likes of Watford, not losing at home to hot favourites like the Hammers.

Saints are actually the favourites to win Tuesday's game with every major bookmaker.

Plus West Ham aren't that "red hot" to win the league, Saints are close behind as 2nd favourites with every major bookmaker.

Dalek isn't even on a good wind-up. It's not remotely funny or even original and has been done to death by other equally nauseating posters, but to a much better standard. I don't think he realises the majority are laughing at what a complete bellend he is by appearing to try so hard yet failing so miserably.

Really? Saints have one of the most expensively assembled squads in the league and one of the highest wage budgets. Plus Adkins doesn't exactly play hoof-ball like the crazy gang.

Well, despite your own perceptions, I didn't exactly say we were LIKE them, did I. I was talking about the spirit of the team, that's all.

Could be a good match. Nothing to fear, we are top of the league for a reason, with an incredible run of form at home. Might be a great night for us, if we win and Middlesbrough and Derby having games where they could drop points we could find ourselves 4 -5 points clear with a 1/4 of the season gone. Of course, it could all go tits up.

Didn't want to get into this as it's a saints v west ham thread but I thought we paid 750k for Cork

If people haven't got a bet on for Saints to win the league they're mad! We can do this. What's more we have a fighting fund for reinforcements in January. West Ham? No chance! :)

Huge match tomorrow then.

Win it and i think we can deffinatly say we should be there or there abouts at the end of the season. We could be 9 points away from 7th place meaning we would really have had to blow it to not even get a playoff spot.

West Ham seem to be a bit like us. Can score goals for fun but leak goals too. This game could be a 4-4 draw or something like that!

And we've sold £14m of talent, so our net spend must be a negative and we're one of the lowest spenders in the Championship?

Significantly, West Ham have a very good away record. Three wins and two draws (compared to our two wins) emphasise that this is going to be a tight match.

Incidentally most of the seven clubs who have a better away record than us have yet to play us at home. Make of that what you will. Without our 100% home record we clearly would not be heading the league.

3-3 draw.
