SO16_Saint Posted 15 October, 2011 Posted 15 October, 2011 Thought he was brilliant when he came on today. Great skill on the ball, always looking for it, always open. Brilliant play when he received the ball deep, 2 players around him turned well and got brought down, and their player got booked. He really seems to be coming on leaps and bounds. Is this my rose tinted view, or is he really starting to look a quality player?
shurlock Posted 15 October, 2011 Posted 15 October, 2011 Some nice flashes but not sure he added a great deal, esp as Chaplow had such a good game. Cut a bit inside too much for my liking.
Littlelat17 Posted 15 October, 2011 Posted 15 October, 2011 Cut a bit inside too much for my liking. that was the game plan and the instructions he had from Nigel according to NA's interview on Solent/Saints player... I think he's still settling in, but certainly from what Ive seen he is just going to get better and better
View From The Top Posted 15 October, 2011 Posted 15 October, 2011 Thought he posed them all sorts of problems when he came on.
Dr Who? Posted 15 October, 2011 Posted 15 October, 2011 We looked more of a threat goig forward after he came on. Final ball was a little naff at times, but he was running them ragged at the back!
Saint_clark Posted 15 October, 2011 Posted 15 October, 2011 Looks like he's still not quite on the same wave length as the rest of the team (in particular one very over hit pass to put Connolly through), but the potential he's shown is more than worth waiting for - remember how long it took Guly to truly hit form?
Matthew Le God Posted 15 October, 2011 Posted 15 October, 2011 Cut a bit inside too much for my liking. That was what Adkins told him to do.
Nexstar Posted 15 October, 2011 Posted 15 October, 2011 He's that bit of flare that we missed for most of the game. Gave Adkins the option of the changing the formation and adding some energy to the game.
saintmatt Posted 15 October, 2011 Posted 15 October, 2011 Did very well today, had same sort of impact as at Cardiff. Defenders must hate playing against him, keeps ball very close to his feet at all times, despite moving it quickly and making darting direction changes. Like his crossing as well, love the old dinked cross from the touchline!
1976_Child Posted 15 October, 2011 Posted 15 October, 2011 has he actually started a league game yet?
Saint_clark Posted 15 October, 2011 Posted 15 October, 2011 has he actually started a league game yet? Yep, the Watford one.
1976_Child Posted 15 October, 2011 Posted 15 October, 2011 Yep, the Watford one. idiot me. of course he did.
shurlock Posted 16 October, 2011 Posted 16 October, 2011 (edited) that was the game plan and the instructions he had from Nigel according to NA's interview on Solent/Saints player... I think he's still settling in, but certainly from what Ive seen he is just going to get better and better Fair enough- though I thought he did it a bit early at times and at times the runs were sideways rather than diagonal. FWIW I think he needs to be starting games - away from home, we can sometimes look a bit one dimensional and we lack that bit of pace that makes defences wary of pushing up. dubai_phil Posted 16 October, 2011 Posted 16 October, 2011 Still think his actual decision making is what lets him down. It is starting to worry me, that he is getting run outs but is not yet coming across as having a great footballing brain for someone with so much natural ability and pace. Maybe it's because he's playing alongside smarter footballers in RL, DC & AL. Guly had similar moments in his first season and has improved, and I am sure that DR will as well, just feel that it is taking him a while. Certainly the pace adds a dimension against tiring defenders but I think there is more to come, which is why he isn't getting the starts yet
Toadhall Saint Posted 16 October, 2011 Posted 16 October, 2011 For me he's not quite done enough yet but I expect to see him improve and kick on in the second half of the season - it takes time to get used to English football.
sammysaint Posted 16 October, 2011 Posted 16 October, 2011 Hes shown he can be class, for now i think giving him 20-25 mins a game will be ok, then after xmas he will hopefully show his pure excellence.
Golden Balls Posted 16 October, 2011 Posted 16 October, 2011 He always seems to get kicked around, which tells me players don't like playing against him. I'm really impressed with him
S-Clarke Posted 16 October, 2011 Posted 16 October, 2011 He's always looked decent when he's come on. To be honest I thought he'd be a regular by now, but all credit to Guly that he's still having to bide his time. He does worry defenders though and he's always winning fouls as that's the only way they can stop him. Very tricky, fast etc, but can sometimes make the wrong choices (will get better with game time I'm sure)
Chez Posted 16 October, 2011 Posted 16 October, 2011 perfect player to come on when opponents legs are tired, but is he the man to start? I'm not sure Nigel trusts him enough yet. That incident in his first game when he didn't track back will ,live long in his memory.
paulwantsapint Posted 16 October, 2011 Posted 16 October, 2011 Yesterday think NA missed a trick not telling SDR to stand about 40 yards in front of KD when defending corners to really scare the derby defence
eastleighhalo Posted 16 October, 2011 Posted 16 October, 2011 Stevie is a match winner ..no question IMHO .. maybe considered a luxury until he is primed in with NA s team job ethos... but would Barca leave Messi out if fully fit?? .. he maybe needs the team built around what he can give ..in the mean time he needs to work his way in under NA s successful formula .. also a question mark whether Adam and Stevie should start in the same game given their forward thinking individual games.. tho I cant think of a better couple of players in this division to be on the pitch if we are chasing a goal .
RobM Posted 16 October, 2011 Posted 16 October, 2011 English football is a long way off what he is used to, but pure footballing quality will always shine through. He needs more time, I think NA is doing the right thing in introducing him gradually, but he will get there and be a star for us I'm sure. You get glimpses of what he can offer, his control, his crosses and distribution... it's only a matter of time before it all comes together in a way suitable for this league. We have time.
Macey_J2 Posted 17 October, 2011 Posted 17 October, 2011 Just check his vids on youtube and you'll see the quality he's got. I prefer him to Guly, despite having different styles. De Ridder is a proper winger who can run down the outside and whip them in. It does seem that Adkins had instructed him to cut inside, and play on the floor with the rest of the guys, but he does provide a different option.
BigShadow Posted 17 October, 2011 Posted 17 October, 2011 He'll score a hatrick against the skates. Goals 4, 5 & 6 presumably.
mitch01 Posted 17 October, 2011 Posted 17 October, 2011 not sure he added a great deal, esp as Chaplow had such a good game. what
ottery st mary Posted 18 October, 2011 Posted 18 October, 2011 De Ridder is a top class player who hopefully will start against WHU tonight and score a couple of our 4 in a 4-1 win.. Will be a regular in our side thereafter.... WIFM
SO16_Saint Posted 18 October, 2011 Author Posted 18 October, 2011 Looked excellent again tonight when he came on. Great quick feet and was unlucky for his goal to be ruled out.
Avenue Saint Posted 18 October, 2011 Posted 18 October, 2011 Looked a cut above when he came on and boy what a game hooiveld had!! Sign him up quick. Chappers was excellent too.
Mattio Posted 18 October, 2011 Posted 18 October, 2011 Perfect sub for today. Kept the ball and should of had a goal
theyin Posted 18 October, 2011 Posted 18 October, 2011 He's that bit of flare that we missed for most of the game. Gave Adkins the option of the changing the formation and adding some energy to the game. Certainly sounded like that from where I'm sitting
sfc4prem Posted 18 October, 2011 Posted 18 October, 2011 Why doesn't he get a start??? Because it's working well having him as an impact sub. Besides, Guly is worthy of a place atm.
shurlock Posted 18 October, 2011 Posted 18 October, 2011 At the moment, its a choice between Chaplow, Guly and De Ridder - can't fault Adkins opting for Chaplow and Guly atm, even though De Ridder offers pace and flair - indeed, he's only the player in and around the squad with genuine pace (Forte's a long way off). If you can't drop Chaplow or Guly, I would make space for De Ridder by resting DC against Reading.
Ohio Saint Posted 18 October, 2011 Posted 18 October, 2011 It seems to me that he is being used as a sub mainly to confuse the opposition with his pace late in the game. To throw the pattern off kilter and generally disrupt the pattern of previous play.
S-Clarke Posted 18 October, 2011 Posted 18 October, 2011 I think he's a great sub to have on the bench. We don't have a huge amount of attacking subs as its...in fact, he's probably our only one. So it makes sense to keep that pace on the bench for now. Besides - There's nothing wrong with our current starting 11. Guly has earned his starting place.

No reason why Connolly can't make way for De Ridder - its not a case of dropping Guly or Chaplow. De Ridder shone at Cardiff when he effectively played in DC's position, feeding off Lambert's flicks. Connolly could then offer something from the bench - tiring defences no doubt hate his short, rapier-like runs and flicks. Pace away from a home on the counter and against defences that like to press high seems a must.
T.REX Posted 19 October, 2011 Posted 19 October, 2011 Has anyone else seen the picture of de ridder getting booked on the OS (Photo ? What the hell did he say to the ref?
Mr_Red Posted 19 October, 2011 Posted 19 October, 2011 Has anyone else seen the picture of de ridder getting booked on the OS (Photo ? What the hell did he say to the ref? Perhaps I've got funny eyes but to me his late challenge just before the yellow looked like a bit of a stamp to me (a light one I admit). He doesn't seem the sort to do that, I hope he isn't, never a fan of anyone who does that - Chappers scares me sometimes too! On another rubbish ref day his yellow could have been red, at least that's how I saw it with aforementioned funny eyes.
SO16_Saint Posted 22 October, 2011 Author Posted 22 October, 2011 Yet again, he came on and changed the game for us. I'm starting to sound like an obsessive here, but he really was the nuts today.
RobM Posted 22 October, 2011 Posted 22 October, 2011 I'd love to see him start up front against Palace, to see how well he would be in that position.
Thedelldays Posted 22 October, 2011 Posted 22 October, 2011 I'd love to see him start up front against Palace, to see how well he would be in that position. I think he is a great little player..always busy and has a bit of an end product would be a decent striker and a good wide attacking player good buy
RobM Posted 22 October, 2011 Posted 22 October, 2011 Agree entirely. With Lamberts hold-up play and through balls, combined with De Ridders pace, tricks and eye for goal I think it could work.
beatlesaint Posted 22 October, 2011 Posted 22 October, 2011 I'd love to see him start up front against Palace, to see how well he would be in that position. Well according to NA he will start against Palace. Be interesting to see if its up front or out wide.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 22 October, 2011 Posted 22 October, 2011 If Barnard is not going to be fit or available then we need other striking options - it's as plain as the twitch on Harry Redknapp's face. Yes, I know we've scored in every game but I just feel with extra striking options around, it could've been even better. Maybe I've become spoilt with the amazing start and I'm unrealistic in wanting even more but I genuinely believe it the extra firepower could really move us away from some of the other promotion contenders. As for De Ridder; would love to see him get a good run of starts. Could be the making of him as a Saint.
Thedelldays Posted 22 October, 2011 Posted 22 October, 2011 I didn't want him to start v Palace. To me that just suggests he won't start v Boro, which is far more important. . what..?

If we say Lambert starting is a given, that leaves us with DC, Doble, Barnard and Forte as our out-and-out strikers. Doble isn't ready yet, IMO. Barnard is injured. Forte isn't quite good enough to command a starting place. That leaves DC, who has an amazing footballing brain and an amazing touch, but can be hit-and-miss. I think we need a quality addition who will step straight into the starting lineup, leaving the others as competition and cover. In the mean time, I'd try De Ridder up-front.
pingwing Posted 22 October, 2011 Posted 22 October, 2011 I was so pleased to see him score the equaliser today, he showed so much passion in his celebration today to show he his clearly on the front seat of the bus with the biggest smile just to be there. He has shown to be a lot of talent, pace and flair for the team and I can't wait to see him do more. DC knows his place is under pressure which is upping his game too making the team even better Love having Steve on the team either way, one of the signings of the season other than Cork
Mmm Donuts Posted 23 October, 2011 Posted 23 October, 2011 Thought he was excellent and added something different
david in sweden Posted 23 October, 2011 Posted 23 October, 2011 watched the game on streamed line, but thought he looked great as the " impact player " NA likes to call them. He certainly gets involved, but I thought his goal was superb, beating defenders then changing feet inside the six yard box and fooling the keeper...class IMHO. Not sure how he'd be for a full 95 minutes, but I still like the idea of starting with Connolly (so apparantly does Lambert) and then bringing SDR into the game as and when ...
