alpine_saint Posted 15 October, 2011 Share Posted 15 October, 2011 I see this has become another Alpine vs thread.......... And for my part, I apologise. The stubborn streak in me has a problem letting it go when I think my viewpoint, although obviously not in step with the majority thinking, gets abused and labelled as "trolling". I have been quite worried about the sequence of 4 games that started today, I think it will have a big impact on our final standing in May, hence my "make or break" thread from earlier this week, and I am disappointed with how it started. It sounds like we were by far the better team and deserved the points (if one can say that when actually we havent secured them..), but we didnt get them. I see this as a potential repeating pattern. dubai_phil Posted 15 October, 2011 Share Posted 15 October, 2011 This, for me, was quite telling, given the Saints-coloured spectacles I see everything through and the fact that Dave Merrington is a key information source : It's not often you hear a TV commentator that enthused about a team they're commentating on, especially in a top of the table clash. At one point I was seriously wondering whether it was actually a Saints ST Holder doing the commentary. He was so positive about us. BUT the key thing is that we deserved his praise. I've heard him doing other games over here and he calls it as he sees it. We played DAMNED good football. There was one spell of pressure in the first half where we played 15 or 20 passes lookig for the weakness. The troll doesn't get it because it only understands hoofball and even though there was a link posted it didn't bother to look at it. There IS one criticism of this style. It IS total football. We don't need "another striker" what we need is for the likes of Chaplow and Morgan to actually take the chances that THEY are being given by Lambert & Connolly and for Guly to develop composure like AL has. When THAT happens we will be unstopable in this league Lambert doesn't have the pace and the aggression, but he showed today that he has so much more to his game and brain than any CF I have seen in a Saints shirt for a long time. But from the commentary I'd agree with the choice of Fonte as MoM he was immense this afternoon. Cork was just class, and it was mentioned more than once. Damned annoyed to be missing this season now. Stupid goal to give away at the start, to relaxed or not focused, but after that? they probably had 10 or 15 minutes of football in the game and a few up and under chances. As for the troll. He should go and support the mancs. Then he'll have some company as he slits his wrists tonight
Dr Who? Posted 15 October, 2011 Share Posted 15 October, 2011 Excellent game, got a bit scrappy at times, but our football was a cut above theirs. I would have been worried back in August, but our good start has seen us get enough points in the bag to absorb the knocks ahead and finish a comfortable mid to lower table. IMO this will be a job well done and fully in line with our ambitions for this year, as evidenced by our lack of investment over the summer. Ian the Red Posted 15 October, 2011 Share Posted 15 October, 2011 Right just got back from the game, marvellous perfomance but have to say 2 points dropped. We dominated for large sections of the game. We were celebrating my mates son's 21st so went in a box, great fun but we got the Derby side: they all thought they were lucky to get a point and we should have won and we were the best team they had played. Nearl;y got thrown out at the end apparently we made too much noise! My worry, we do not have another goal scorer. Connolly is not doing the business and hasnt been for sometime. He gives the ball away more than Guly and is not scoring. If Ricky gets injured we are in trouble. Defensively, well very poor goal, Fonte mistake to start with, he should have hammered the ball into touch and then KD: two hands to the ball and pushed it back into the box instead of away from the goal. From then on all Saints until the last 15 minutes when Derby came back into it. On the positive side we still created even without AL. Draw and still top by 2 points!! Win Tuesday and still top! Sour Mash Posted 15 October, 2011 Share Posted 15 October, 2011 It was 2 points dropped. For all our possession we were not good enough in the final third. Seriously, so close to being way ahead at the top. Just fear some of these games come back to bite us at the end of the year.

pingwing Posted 16 October, 2011 Share Posted 16 October, 2011 Derby are deadfall! Can not believe they are 3rd without paying off every ref in the league. The ref was even worse, EVERY decision was wrong, booking made no sense, he didn't give away free kicks when half our team were being hauled to the ground and gave them free kicks for almost nothing. Hope he's fired. We look ok without lallana, struggled with a lack of any wide players for the first half. Struggled with Richardson being very very poor defensively (if he knew what he was doing Font wouldn't have had to go steaming in for their goal and the system would have worked). Chaplow was woeful, the moment we got De Ridder on we had pace and could break up their terrible play. Lambert is class and I hope we hang on to him for the rest of his career. Man of the match is between Jos and Fox who between them seem to have finally got an understanding at the left side of the back line, who goes forward, when and how to cover. Ben Davis on the right had nothing to do with the game as he was shut down by them both so well.

Ben Davis on the right had nothing to do with the game as he was shut down by them both so well. Awful post. The ref hardly got every decision wrong. Going through the bookings: Fox: Late challenge, stonewall yellow Fonte, grabbed the player when through, again clear yellow Morgan: Didn't agree with that one Lambert: Kicking the ball away, although may not have been a foul in the build up So the bookings were fair. He gave a couple of Freekicks to Rickie in the match, and one about 22 yards out in the first half when Connolly was hauled down. I', sure you have had worst days at work. dubai_phil Posted 16 October, 2011 Share Posted 16 October, 2011 How pathetic. Of course we are. Desperately looking for the silver lining already ? I reckon we are going to need a serious tonking before some of our fans wake up to the artificial position we are in. We clearly cannot get results at promotion rivals. Well you are watching it and are still clueless about where we are in terms of quality. As far as I am concerned the excuses made against Cardiff and Leicester are invalidated today. This is 3 times a row now we have demonstrated an inability to get results where we will really need to *cue straw-clutching comments about the game not being over, playing well and "on another day...just bad luck" Nope That use of the English language was pathetic

Toadhall Saint Posted 16 October, 2011 Share Posted 16 October, 2011 From what I saw yesterday (on the stream) we played like we have all season - superb and on another day we would have murdered them (well perhaps maimed). We are creating good chances and as all good teams do putting some away but not all (what teams do?). The acid test is now Tuesday night - hopefully AL will be back to provide that little extra something. West ham are a good side IMHO and without belittling any of the teams we've played so far truly our biggest test of the season (so far).

Windmill Arm 2 Posted 16 October, 2011 Share Posted 16 October, 2011 I see the usual moronic fecktards are at it again. 1-1 away to the third placed team in the division without our talisman is a mint result, particularly when you take into account how different it could have been. Their goal WAS offside, so we could have won, we had several chances, so we could have won, but Derby will feel they also could have won. Win at home, dont lose away, and dont lose to your top 6 rivals, achieve that and we are going up. Man up you fecking tossers. dune Posted 16 October, 2011 Share Posted 16 October, 2011 On this occasion Alpine Saint is right. Someone must have dropped an E in Merringtons half time cocoa if he was waxing lyrical about the performance. Having lots of possession is pointless if we do nothing with it. It was a carbon copy of the Cardiff performance and if we carry on like this we'll lose/draw more than we'll win.

As with Leicester we started slowly and it has ultimately cost us all three points. We were miles apart in class. Don't get me wrong, if someone had offered me a point before the start of the game yesterday I would have taken it, but all things considered, we really should have beaten them. Cabrone Posted 16 October, 2011 Share Posted 16 October, 2011 It was a decent away point to a team that will probably beat a few of our rivals at their place. Having said that I'm more than happy to take a point away from home against a promotion rival. Their goal (offside debate aside) was pretty good considering the excellent tackle by Fonte and he save by Kelvin - yet they still battled to get the ball in the back of the net. Gulys strike in the first half brought an awesome save out of their keeper who appeared to have been bnlind to the shot cos of the defender moving across. Great game of football and both sets of fans got their moneys worth. Actually, in that context I can understand why a few fans would NOT want promotion to the EPL. pap Posted 16 October, 2011 Share Posted 16 October, 2011 We'd have all taken a point from this fixture, but I'd agree that it was 2 points lost. Derby were not a good side yesterday - we dominated pretty much from their goal onwards. They did look dangerous from corners, etc - but we were just about equal to the task of defending them. Bit concerned at the number of chances we squandered - I'd agree with previous posters that we need more options up front. Lambert is already a Saints legend as far as I'm concerned, but it'd be nice to have a taller/faster option than Connolly when the situation warrants it. That said, we looked strong, played well and bossed most of the game. The only pride felt coming out of that park was from Saints fans. Fair play to Derby for turning up in such numbers, but their team let them down. Comes to something when you hear the fans getting excited just because one of their midfielders gets possession and has a little bit of space. A draw is not a fair result but I'll take it, especially as it really could have gone either way. I love our away support too, with the possible exception of the bloke standing immediately behind me who was screaming at the players and gobbing on our heads as he did so. He even lumped me over the head after a contentious refereeing decision. Brilliant support, boys and girls. Need a few more songs though.

Mate, if that's what it is, I'm all for it. Some of our passing yesterday was magnificent, and teams can't do anything if the opposition is retaining possession. Beautiful team to watch at times and despite the occasional lapses in concentration, just seem to have so many of the basics down. The series of corners at the end that Derby got were nerve-jangling as they were happening, but the team dug in and did their job time after time. So if your contention is that we're so good we make others look crap, I'd have to agree

I see this as a potential repeating pattern.the flip side of this is that on on other occasions, notably Millwall, we got more than we deserved. The fact is we are playing well and despite going behind we still have the composure, quality and grit to grab hold of games and come back. That is a hard thing to do - how many managers say they would have won if they had scored the first goal? Right now we are playing excellent attractive passing football, we're top of the league and there is next to nothing to be negative about unless you are really looking for it.
